My father was a man ahead of his time and didn't believe in double standards for females, he hit me with the same force as he hit my brother. Ok well maybe I did get off easy, brother got the closes fisted hits, I didn't. Dad's are good for things coming up with gems like 'I'll give you something to cry about'. The fear you felt in your heart after you talked back, ran up the steps and slammed the door you knew it was only seconds before he came flying in with steam coming out of his ears.

I can only remember getting into a lot of trouble once. When I was about 13, I snuck out of the house and stayed out all night with one of my friends. My mom said that I had to go do something good for someone, so my friend and I spent an entire day cleaning this 90 year old woman's windows inside and out. My parents were weird like that.

i always got the threat of "you'll get your mouth washed out with soap" so i didnt use bad language around the house. i knew my mom was serious though because my brother had his mouth around a bar of ivory for marching around chanting, "BOOGERS, BOOGERS, BOOGERS!" after witnessing this, i never used bad language around my mom.

My Pop was always wailing on us with something. It was either the belt as kids or the back of the hand across the face as teens. No full on punches though. He once got so pissed that I used my lunch money to buy a kite...He ripped it up chased me around the house beating me with THAT. You learned quick if his temple was throbbing, you better run. Like the GREAT SANTINI without a plane he was. Worse than Pop was a football coach. Not much physical violence but plenty of humiliation and bullying (mind games). Despite growing up with constant screaming and punishment I'm not bitter. Nobody scares me. No really. I laugh at people that even try that shit now. And Pops? He's mellowed with age. We get along great. We talk about what a prick he was at times. He says he was nothing compared to his Dad. Wow.

I think he just doesn't have the energy to lash out in frustration like he use to.. still annoying but much easier to be around these days.

Me and my brother would get the belt constantly. Belt to bare ass. Its always the fear leading up to the spanking that's worse. As we got older that kinda went away, but my brother got into fist to fist brawls. I refuse to fight my dad even though he would push me and totally try to coax me into it, but my bro was always game. My favorite story, was my brother and dad were duking it out in the house and my brother connected a good one, and then my dad swung missed and put his hand through the front of a wood bed post. He broke his hand, and it was a weird way to end a fight.

When we fought with each other, we would have to sit and copy the 13th Chapter of 1st Corinthians (the Love chapter). The 3 of us memorized and recited and we told Dad we wanted to see Apocolypse Now. He took us....as promised. It was hard for him - he is a Vet. Marc with a c wrote:

Yes, from my Sicilian mother. Especially when I was little.

As I grew up, discipline became more ineffective. I did well in school, but it didn't really matter since my parents didn't believe in giving out tangible rewards for that. I refused to do chores, and consequently, they refused to give me an allowance, but that was okay since I wasn't exactly lusting after things and all my basic needs were met anyway - so eventually they gave up on that. I never got grounded because when I would hang out with my friends, I never had a curfew or anything, and my parents would always barely know about it. They'd know where I was, but that was about it. Nobody ever waited up for me (I was the youngest of three so that might have had something to do with it). Then again, I was always a good kid who never got into sort of real trouble so I guess it was sort of a trade off - I tell you the bare minimum in exchange for not doing anything stupid. Even though I was a good kid I did always have a "smart mouth" so that'd warrant me the occasional slap, especially if I refused to apologize which initially was always the case.

Incidentally, I was such a goody two shoes that I never swore until 7th grade. Then I decided it was high time and basically, it was just like turning an on switch. I still never swore at home though.
