Great article in the Post today about the Nats....namely, that

NOBODY HAS ANY CLUE WHO ANYBODY IS

Basically, the team has been gutted from last year...Vidro's gone, most of the pitchers are gone (which is a good thing), which means John Patterson is our 1 Starter, and a bunch of guys who may or may not be named Moe are in the rotation

Now, I can understand the direction the team is going in, and why management has done what they are doing, and I basically agree with it. There has been nothing in the farm for a number of years thanks to MLB Ownership's bare bones budgeting, and the deal that still makes me shake my head, when Omar Minaya felt he could make a playoff run and traded Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips and Grady Sizemore for Bartolo Colon *Groan*

But will the fans have patience? I surely hope they will. A new stadium's opening next year, and I like the direction the team is going for, to build from within, and create a stable, long lasting competitive franchise.

This year? We win 50 games....and that's the BEST outlook...I also look for more vets to be dealt as the season wears on. Hopefully, we can find someone dumb enough to take Guzman's contract off us. I can also see them dealing Nick Johnson, whos perpetually injured, if they can get ANY kind of production out of Larry Broadway. Theyve been talking about dealing Cordero all summer, so I would expect him to go. The only people i think that are completely secure and won't be dealt under any circumstances are Zimmerman, Kearns and Schneider.

But I will be glad to see them come just play...pitchers and catchers report tuesday!

GO NATS!!

I think they'll do better than 50 wins for sure. They've done a decent job building their lineup with patient hitters. I still think that kearns, lopez, and wagner trade was one of the best trades i've seen in a while. Their starting pitching is going to be something to see though. Well...now that Spring's over, I really don't think this team will be as bad as I originally thought. I think we will lose somewhere in the neighborhood of 80-90 games, which would make us respectably bad, as opposed to unutterably bad.
Here's how the lineup looks
LF - Ryan Church
CF- Nook Logan
RF- Austin Kearns
3B-Ryan Zimmerman
SS-Cristian Guzman
2B-Felipe Lopez
1B-Dmitri Young
C-Brian Schneider
Bench:
Alex Escobar, Chris Snelling, Ronnie Belliard, Robert Fick, Jesus Flores
I think for the most part, we will have a pretty good offense. Guzman has played REALLY well during the spring, and most around the organization feel he has rededicated himself to baseball. With Lopez leading off and Guzman hitting second, if they can get on consistently, Zimmy should see a TON of fastballs, which means he should put up some real good numbers. I still don't understand how he didn't win the ROY last year. Was Hanley Ramirez really all that much better?
Dmitri Young is just keeping Nick Johnson's spot warm (he won the clash of the titans over Travis Lee and Larry Broadway) he'll be out until at least July I believe...after one of the sickest baseball injuries ive ever seen last year, when he broke his leg in two running into Austin Kearns.
Theyve got Lopez leading off...I dont know how long he will do that until the Nooker supplants him (he's been a little banged up during the spring). Schneider is one of the best catchers in the game, so im not worried about that position. Escobar played great in the limited time I saw him last year, but he can never stay healthy, and Snelling has been RAKING all spring (we got him from Seattle in the Vidro deal). Flores (a Rule 5 kid) backs up Brian Schneider, so I assume theyre keeping Fick around to platoon 1B with Young or to play some RF
Pitching looks like
Rotation
John Patterson
Shawn Hill
Matt Chico
Jason Bergmann
Jerome Wee-ums/Lavale Speigner
Jason Simonatacci will probably be in the rotation once he returns from injury. Chico has looked really shaky at times spring, but Speigner has been lights out. I believe he only gave up one or two runs all spring in something like 20 innings.
Bullpen
John Rauch, Ryan Wagner, Micah Bowie, Ray King, Jesus Colome, Chad Cordero
The pitching staff as a whole is really mediocre at best, but I hope playing in the cavern that is RFK will help. Bergmann looked good today in the little I saw of him.
This will be a long season, but I can deal with the losing knowing that we have a good future ahead of us
GO NATS!

You've gotta love spring. Even a Nationals fan has hope before seeing their squad hit the field.
With a few breaks going their way, they might win 50 this season.
El Mudo
03-31-2007, 06:46 PM
I was thinking 50 too at the beginning of spring
But we're not that bad
They can begin to build a decent core around Zimmerman, Johnson, and Lopez.
Their biggest problem, though, is that they don't have a lot of chips come the trading deadline in terms of players to move to stock up on prospects, unless they entertain the idea of trading Chad Cordero for some major league ready talent.
They're going to have to hope Austin Kearns puts up a big year, or Guzman plays a little more like he did in Minnesota, or someone like Jerome Williams who's still young enough where he could be decent starts out well and they can move them at the deadline to some team that's desperate and rob them of some pretty good prospects.
El Mudo
04-01-2007, 05:33 AM
Well, Johnson's out until at least July....Wee-ums has pitched well enough to make the rotation.
They have been trying to move Cordero for a while...we'll see what happens. But other than that, there are no quick fixes. There's nothing in the system, and its something they'll have to build up over time.
Can you tell i'm still mad about the fact that "genius" Omar Minaya traded Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore, and Brandon Phillips away?

After the first two games, all i can say is...."oof"
I may have to go back to my 50 win projection
Not only have we looked bad the first two games, but after one game
-Nook Logan was put on the DL
-Cristian Guzman was put on the DL
-Jesus Colome has a bad shin
And today, Ronnie Belliard was hit TWICE by baseballs during BP in freak occurences
Only 159 more games to go  ...this is depressing

Got back from tonight's game about an hour ago. Unbelievably, they are possibly more atrocious than reported. The bullpen is well on its way to being exhausted by the middle of April. Now I know what it was like for my parents to go to Senators' games.
This team is going to run away with the record for most errors. They must have booted 3 routine double plays last night.

Being a long--time Expo fan for 30 years, this season may be by far the most difficult to watch. They have some key young players and are building towards the opening of the new stadium but this will likely be a 100+ loss season.

Shawn Hill has been a pleasant surprise this year....he's pitched awesome, and just hasn't got any support, but he got the job done today....and the Chief held on for the save
The Pen really has taken a beating lately...between Micah Bowie's blowups and Chief blowing saves...its basically become the Jesus Colome show

06-09-2007, 05:38 PM
Haha....there was a great story about him earlier this year
Apparently, he doesn't like to give interviews when he's not dressed...one of the paper guys was trying to interview him and he learned very quickly its not a good idea to ask him questions when he isn't dressed
At this point, we could use the depth in the minors (and Dmitri becomes expendable when Nick Johnson comes back in July)...he will almost certainly be dealt, and I could also see them dealing Cordero and/or Colome, since the bullpen is one of the strengths of the club right now, and a place where we have a lot of depth even though we've lost Ryan Wagner for probably all of the next two years, and maybe for good (his shoulder is kaput) and Luis Ayala should be coming back in the next couple of months too...not to mention guys like Bacsik, and Bowie, and possibly Speigner/Simontacchi will be moving back into the bullpen as Hill, Patterson, Bergie and Jerome Weeums come back, although at this point i'd rather have Simontacchi or Speigner in the rotation than Jerome Weeums, who was flat out terrible, and had no faith in his own stuff....if you deal Cordero, Jon Rauch can close, he proved that when he filled in when the Chief went on bereavement leave
And how about LaVale Speigner having a GREAT outing against the Twins?....wow....his stuff was electric

100th save for the Chief....became the second youngest to do so
I dont know how he does it....he doesn't overpower anybody, and he doesnt have an "out" pitch (like Rivera's cutter or Hoffman's changeup), and more saves that I can remember have ended with the bases loaded or with a fly ball on the warning track
The question is how many more will he get as a National...there will be a nice market for Cordero at the deadline this season...the Nationals have a chance to make out with some good young players if they decide to trade him.

I know we'll get a lot of value for Dmitri...the guy is the second best hitter in the entire NL right now, only behind some guy from Colorado, which really means he is the best hitter in the NL right now since any hitting stats accrued in Colorado shouldn't count. He'll be a good addition for a contender
I waver on Cordero all the time....as ineffective and as frustrating as he can be at times, the guy still gets saves, and i believe he's only 23 or 24. I really think he's someone we can build around and he can be the closer here for a long time, and I think management feels the same way, so I'm thinking more that they will deal Jesus Colome, who will probably be our representative in the all star game, and who just KILLS righties (theyre only hitting .193 off him). I could also see a potential Micah Bowie deal for a team that needs another left handed arm down the stretch...he's pitched very well for us as a spot starter since the rotation imploded
Good news on the minor front....they just promoted the entire outfield from Hagerstown to Potomac (Justin Maxwell, Chris Marerro and Mike Daniel)

Glad to see Watson get the call-up and contribute to the win in his second game. He deserves another look. Especially with Logan and Langerhans playing like L-squared.
Mudo, any plans to add Potomac to your list of minor league parks? With everything I've seen and read about Chris Marrero, I might have to take a trip down there. Did you see him at Hagerstown?

Yeah I was down there in Hagerstown when Marerro, Daniel and Maxwell were all there...I dont remember much about Marerro, but I do remember being impressed by Daniel and Maxwell
They felt they owed Watson....and with Fick going on bereavement leave, a spot opened up on the roster (I think they also put Escobar back on the DL, which opened up a spot for Luis Ayala)
I won't go see Potomac cause I really have no desire to deal with going to Woodbridge...If I ever go out there, itll either be on a weekend, or if they do another major/minor doubleheader deal at RFK

One of our other prospects, Colin Balester is pitching really well down in Harrisburg (AA)....so well in fact that a lot of people feel he will be up with the big club for September callups, if not before then

Tough week....lost Cristian Guzman for the season due to thumb surgery
That means Lopez back to SS and Belliard back to 2b...and its not a coincidence we were at our worst when Guzman was out of the lineup earlier in the season...
This is going to be a bad stretch....Luis Ayala is back and pitching well, but its going to be a while for Nick Johnson. They had to send Brandon Watson back down when Robert Fick came back, which didn't make a lot of sense to some people, but Nook Logan is out of minor league options (as is Ryan Langerhans) and neither of those guys would clear waivers on their way back to AAA. I still believe in Logan...his speed on the basepaths can change games, he's just got to find a way to get on base consistently
I also think its time to end the Mike Bacsik experiment...I'd really like to see what John Lannan can do, since he's been pitching so well (and he's also a 6 foot 5 lefty), and even Emiliano Fruto...but I assume Fruto, and guys like Mike Hinckley and Balester will have to wait till september call ups. Hell, Mike O'Connor's still down there too, and he started here all last year

Two out of three from Milwaukee to go into the break...i'm impressed (of course, if we hadn't dropped 3 out of 4 to the Cubs right before that )
As far as a first half recap, i'm genuinely surprised. People expected us to be in/around the 50 win barrier, and we're not really that far off from last year's pace at all (i believe we're on pace to win one more game than last year's pace), and having most of the pitching staff hurt could have exacerbated the situation, but we've managed to stay together and play good baseball for the most part. Now comes dealing off tradeable assets (like Dmitri Young) and getting good parts in return. I look for a lot of people to move, and a lot of guys in our system to get their shots over the second half (like Colin Balester, Emiliano Fruto, John Lannan, Brandon Watson etc)
Manny Acta should be manager of the year, and i say that with ZERO bias

I was happy to read this. I'm guessing Mudo is ecstatic.

Not as ecstatic as you might think. I really think its a mistake. Sure he's had a hell of a year hitting the ball, but his value is never going to be higher than it is now, you could have gotten some really good young talent for him (like the Rangers just got for Teixiera), and we already have Nick Johnson. Now DMo says he's going to lose 40 pounds and play Left Field, which could reset the unintentional comedy scale as we know it, but what happens when Johnson comes back full time? And the OF is crowded already (even tho Langerhans and Logan hit about as well as I do and Alex Escobar can't stay healthy) Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if they still dealt him, but I think its remote now. I think the Belliard extension was a little short sighted too for pretty much the same reasons
I don't look for us to do much on deadline day...Cordero's name has been flying around out there since early June, but we'll have to see what happens. There really wasnt a whole lot here to sell outside of Belliard and DMo.
Cristian Guzman's injury REALLY wrecked the team this year...we haven't been the same since...and he was RAKING at the time he got hurt
