View Full Version : Why Diet Coke AND Coke Zero?

It makes no sense to me. The only explanation I've heard is that their research showed men considered it pussy to order a Diet Coke, so they developed this manly Coke Zero gimmick to tap into this heretofore unbreached market.

Ok, fair enough. But why go to the trouble of creating a new product? Change the look, a new marketing campaign, and your problem is solved. Or pull Caffeine Free Diet Coke (no one will miss it) off the shelves, rename it, and Bob's your uncle, Coke Zero. But this is a whole new, delicious thing. It's almost Coke straight, but whatever makes it not Coke straight disappears as a mixer. You can't tell the difference between it and regular Coke. So if they have this vastly superior product, why go to the trouble of keeping and supporting the old one? It's fucking weird, man.

Diet Coke is sweetened with NutraSweet. Zero is a mixture of NutraSweet and some other (more evil) artificial sweetener. Coke Zero SUCKS!!! I tried it once, and I almost threw up.

I just noticed your reference to Caffeine Diet Coke. That's a third product. Coke Zero and Diet Coke are both calorie free (for the most part), but they both have caffeine. Like I said... They rely on different methods of sweetening. Another issue is the word "diet". In some countries, (Japan, for example) they are not allowed to use the word "diet", unless it's a health related product. In those countries, Diet Coke is sold as Coke Light". They may have wanted to urge the U.S. to embrace Zero, so they wouldn't need to have separate tables.

In any case... Zero SUCKS!!!

Blasphemy! Diet coke and Coke Zero taste totally differnt and CZ is effing awesome!

I should've prefaced that by pointing out that I'm a soda lunatic:

I love regular pepsi and diet coke

I hate regular coke and diet pepsi.

Coke zero tastes like regular pepsi. Therefore I love it, of byfacto. What they need to get rid of are those NASTY diet coke with lemon or lime combos. They also need to bring back the Vanilla diet coke or make me a vanilla coke zero.

Caffeine Free Diet Coke is the only soda I drink. I drink coffee by the gallon, so the last thing I need is more caffeine. I've been drinking it for so long any other soda tastes like shit to me.

Here's the difference between the two products...

Diet Coke is a different formulation from Regular, Classic Coke. I believe Diet Coke is actually the New Coke formula with Nutrasweet, but I could be wrong.

Coke Zero is the same formulation as Classic Coke, but with the sugar removed and a combination of sweetners added.

Coke Zero is designed for a male demographic and for those who have "gotten used to" drinking diet beverages after drinking regular sweetened beverages.

I loved Coke; preferred it to Pepsi. When I stopped drinking sugared soda, I tried Diet Coke and hated it; now I'm a fiend for Diet Pepsi as Liz will attest to. When there is no Diet Pepsi in the house, I get grouchy.

When Coke Zero was introduced, I tried it, and I fell in love all over again. Coke Zero RULES. I still love Diet Pepsi, but it makes a nice change of pace once in a while.

Apparently, Coke Zero is doing well enough to have flavored offshoots, because now Cherry Coke Zero is available as well.

I see other Zero drinks popping up now as well, Sprite Zero, Sierra Myst Free or Zero whatever it is, but it's the same gimmick. I used to drink Diet Coke years ago, and Caffiene Free Diet Coke, then moved to Coke Zero but I was never crazy about any of them, now I've gone back to drinking regular Coke. I hate that it's unhealthy because it's so good and refreshing and gives me a kick sometimes at work when my energy is gone. I don't drink soda all that often, but when I'm in the mood it's either Coke or ginger ale for me...or root beer.

Yes, as stated above, Coke Zero is Coca-Cola Light, which is what they've been carrying in Europe and Asia forever. When I first had one on a flight to Germany, I got so mad that they could actually make a Diet Coke that tasted like Coke, but that they were withholding it from the US market, I stole some little ones from the stewardess' cart.

When I got home, I had an expensive Coke Light habit that led me to order it in glass bottles from Mexico. It was awesome.

Now that coke Zero is here, I find it's a little sweet to drink every time I want a soda, but I like it occasionally.

Product differentiation. Proivide two products instead of one you increase you share of the market as long as you can convince people they are not the same.

I thought Diet Coke with Splenda and Coke Zero were the same thing. I only saw the splenda one briefly before the Zero came out. I'm a Diet Coke addict, so I don't really like the taste of either. I do think Zero does taste like regular Coke, which tastes too sweet to me. I do like some of the other Zero flavors like Sprite and Vault. If I'm in a situation where I can't get a Diet Coke, I go for something non-cola instead (iced tea, ginger ale, Jack Daniel's straight, meth, etc.)

I had posted in a prior thread that Pepsi had done something similar.

Pepsi One was originally billed as a diet w/ fewer calories. It totally shit the bed.

They found when you but in the Splenda the Diet Pepsi had a noticeably different taste and that didn't go over well w/ consumers.

That's what they brought back Pepsi One as a diet with Splenda and left regular Diet Pepsi the way it was.

i HATE diet soda, Pepsi or Coke. It think they all taste like shit with horrid after taste.

I tried coke zero at my parents on night at dinner and loved it. I actually like it better than regular coke, but not as much as Pepsi. It does not have a disgusting after taste, and has just the right amount of sweetness.

I am just waiting for it to show up in resturants where I eat. The only time I really drink soda is when i go out for dinner, at home I only drink water. Regular soda is such a wate of calories, and diet will ruin my meal
