Just got back from the dentist. I had been having some pain in one of my teeth for the last few days. I was pretty sure it was a cavity. The pain was bareable, until this morning when I had to struggle through breakfast and lunch. I was starting to think maybe I had two cavities, it had been a while since I'd gotten checked up. Well, the dentist looks at my teeth for a minute, then taps on my tooth. I give a nice solid grunt from the pain (its hard to say 'that hurts' with someones hand in your mouth) and he immediately says I have a fractured tooth and I'm gonna need a root canal. He gave me an X-Ray just to be sure, but he said everything I'd described fit that and it kinda looked like I might have one. He refered me to a root canal specialist and I've got an appointment tomorrow morning. I've never had something like this done before, but the description of the procedure sounds fucking awful. I'm kinda freaking out about it.

I'm very bad with the dentist, and when I had to get a root canal the guy could tell I was way fucking nervous. He sent me home with a script for a nice big fat 2mg bar of xanax. I took it before the root canal the next day and did not care what the hell he was doing.

...and Jeff had a field day with the nursing for an entire week.

Most irritating question a dentist asks with his hands muffling your mouth: "Pain or Pressure?"

I had a root canal a couple years ago, and it was actually no big deal. It was basically pain free, and it didn't take long (although it did require two visits).

Don't sweat it though. Root canals are about 1/20th as bad as everyone makes them sound.

Root canals are in no way as bad as they used to be. In reality it's kind of amazing how fast the pain goes away.

Cupcake, you might not want to read this part until after the root canal is finished. This is not normally how they go.

I think I might have told this story on here once before, but I had a root canal done once on a tooth, and they missed some of the nerve. My tooth was killing me in a couple days so I went back. The dentist gave me the option of getting it fixed without the Novicane, so I said sure. Let me just say, that a toothache is usually a general dull feeling somewhere in the area of the problem. When that dentist stuck that scraper in my open tooth, she hit the direct center of the pain. It was excrutiating pain for a split second and then it was gone. It was kind of amazing to feel the exact center of a toothache.

. . . no masochist

Wow Reesh, my root canal experience is way different.

I had one and it hurt like hell! every last second felt like I was getting knee'd in the sack. Then I found out from another dentist that this root canal was fucked so it had to be done again. It hurt like hell!

The damage done from the first one couldn't save the tooth. I had it pulled in August.

I'd sooner have an inmate shove a broom up my ass than go through that shit again!
