This is getting ridiculous. RIP big man. You might have been a dick to ECW near the end there, but while you were there you were on par with Bam Bam as far as big men are concerned.

Former ECW champ Mike Awesome passes away

by Dave Meltzer

Dave@wrestlingobserver.com

Mike Alfonso, better known as Mike Awesome, was found dead on Saturday evening in the Tampa area according to those close to the family. He was 42.

Friends were coming to his home in Tampa to pick him up and go out Saturday night at about 10:30 p.m. and he never answered the door and found him hanging in the home. It is believed the death was due to suicide pending results of the autopsy.

Mike Awesome was one of the top foreign stars in FMW in Japan, who as a high-flying big man was made ECW champion on two occasions in 1999 and 2000. As champion, he signed with WCW, creating a situation that many feel ended up killing the title as Tazz from WWF was brought back to ECW to win the title, yet at the same time the title was jobbed in WWF.

He worked for a few months with WWF after the collapse of WCW, as well as with All Japan, but had not wrestled in some time. He was working as a realtor at Coldwell Banker at the time of his death.

wow, so sad. another wrestler taken in the prime of his life. i have no respect for him for what he did to the EcW title but to have your inner demons drive you to the point of taking your own life is something i wish on no body.

Wrestlers have the shortest lives. It really sucks that few of these guys live to be even 40

Another old Awesome story, when he couldn't change in the dressing room at his last ecw match when he droped the belt to taz. He went from the hotel room to his car, entered the building through the back door had the 5 minute match and left through the back door...classic real life heat...He was and always will be Awesome.

This is very sad for me to type one of my all time favorits Mike Awesome has passed.

From what I read he hung himself this past weekend.

Some of my favorite Awesome moments...December '99 Masato Tanaka title changes, N@R '99 Tanaka match, GAC '00 Spike match, All the FMW stuff, The jump to WCW, Spring Stamped '00 vs Scott Steiner, Powerbome of ICP on that 70s' bus, Powerbomb of Rhyno on a ladder at the start of the invasion,,,even the fat chick thrilla, that 70s guy, team canada, he mad it all work with his style in the ring.

Thanks for the Awesome matches, he will forever be remembered to me as an all time favorite.

Let' see what Styles has to say about it if anything at all. He's been very vocal about his rabid hatred for him after what he did to the title.

I figured as much, just curious to see if he gives his "thoughts and prayers" or just leaves it alone and lets Taz handle the announcement.

I'm not sure if it's more or less sad that he took his own life. I thought he was one of those guys who would last forever in Japan, but I guess your schtick gets old over there too. No matter how much venom I had for him after what he did in ECW, this is such a shame.

Damn...always thought he was a great wrestler when given the chance... This is real sad, even sadder if it was suicide...

I think Awesome was the best power wrestler I've ever seen. I was a wrestling fan between 1989 and 2002. Awesome's run in FMW was awesome. He relied a lot on his strength and size but he knew how to work a match, moreso than he receives credit for. For example, his matches with Masato Tanako never slowed down so that one or the other could call a spot. The awesome bomb was probably the most feared finisher in the late nineties. Awesome couildn't keep up the pace when his knee injuries caught up to him no matter how much we worked through them. Awesome was one of my favorite wrestlers and I will miss him!

Can scientists just officially classify Wrestlers as a different species with a lower life expectancy?
