View Full Version : A Handsome woman?

<p>I was paid a compliment by a woman tonite who said I was handsome. I replied back "Thank you! So are you!"<br />She took incredible offence to it and made a bit of a scene and I was very embarressed. I did not mean it in any negative way at all. It is an old fashioned way of talking. Maybe it is not used so much these days, but do you think her reaction was wrong? In 20/20 hindsight, maybe I could have sais "Thank you! You are beautiful!". On the flip side, can a man be considered "beautiful"? If it was the other way around and Brad Pitt tells a woman she is beautiful and she replies "So are you!", should he be offended? </p><p>(I am not comparing myself to Brad Pitt! - Just saying..)</p>

My chick calls me pretty all the time, and so have ex girlfriends, and I never have a problem with it. I think a woman hearing a guy say she's handsome would only take offense because she thought you were being sarcastic because handsome is generally used with men. I don't know, people are wierd, they never listen to context or tone of voice anymore I notice.

Yes, i don't want to be mean sr, but handsome is 100% a male compliment. I don't think ive ever heard it in a female context.

<p><font size="2">Yeah "Handsome Woman" Is A Legit Term. It Applies To A Good-Looking Woman Who Is On The Masculine Side, As Opposed To Really Feminine. Someone Like Kathleen Turner Could Be Referred To As A "Handsome Woman".</font></p><p><font size="2">Women Always Take It As An Insult, Though.</font></p>

<p>I'm going to side closer to Fat Sunny on this debate. In modern usage, the term "handsome woman" usually connotes a female who is middle-aged or older, has "strong" features and is rich. If she isn't rich, she gets demoted to "horse-faced".</p><p> </p><p> </p>

The more I tried to defend myself and legitimize that what what I said was not an offensive thing, the more enraged she became. There was no going back. I guess if I got on my knees and begged for forgiveness and said I was an asshole, she would have accepted it, but I know in my heart it was not a offensive thing, so why should I beg for forgiveness? Some women will take what you say and assign deep meaning to it and you have to walk on egg shells with them. Others are cool and will understand and not take offence and realise that you meant well and let it go.

You probably would have made it even worse somehow. I don't say that as a reflection on you, but rather that the person you're dealing with if she was so turned off by your attempts to correct yourself already than really nothing you can do would have fixed it. Than in itself speaks to her own view on herself and her subconcious that maybe she feels awkward about something about herself and your innocent mistake just brought it all out. Was it a mistake on your part, sure. Over reaction on her part? Absolutely. Don't beat yourself up over it. </p>
I use the term "handsome" to describe a woman who's a bit older but still attractive with very striking features. She was probably "hot" or "gorgeous" when she was in her twenties and thirties, but when she's pushing 50 but is still good looking, I'll call her "handsome."

It may have been partly like Reeph said, in a "you too" kind of way, but I believe she took it to be like I was saying she was "manly", but I did not mean it like that at all. I just hate having to always be on egg shells, and think before I talk. It makes me not want to talk with her anymore.
