PWTorch has learned that TNA Wrestling and the NWA have agreed to a split of their partnership.

Bob Trobich, head of legal for the NWA, and Steve Campbell, head of legal for Panda Energy as representative of TNA, have negotiated to terminate the working agreement between the NWA and TNA. NWA will take back possession of the NWA Hvt. Title and NWA Tag Titles with a storyline to be set up at the Destination X PPV.

Jeff Jarrett has been the third party representing TNA during the negotiations to cease the working relationship.

There have been a lot of rules that the NWA has that TNA has not been following. As TNA has grown, and as the NWA name has become less of a marketing asset, a split was considered a strong possibility. TNA long ago stopped using the title "NWA-TNA" as its name.

TNA aligned with the NWA initially because TNA founder Jerry Jarrett, Jeff's father, believed that the "NWA" name carried credibility with the target audience for the weekly Wednesday night PPV format TNA began with. The heritage of the NWA World Title has been a marketing tool for TNA over its four-plus year history. TNA, though, did not want to abide by NWA rules such as having to notify the NWA board ahead of time when a title change was planned, use the NWA name in all marketing, and pay the NWA a fee if TNA ran an event in another NWA member's territory. For those and a variety of other reasons, an agreement to split has been reached.

TNA's titles will lose the NWA label and become TNA titles. How TNA will handle the "lineage" aspect of the storyline shift is not known yet. This has happened before, such as when ECW and World Class Championship Wrestling split from the NWA in the mid-1990s and mid-1980s respectively.

i doubt most of todays fans could give a shit about the nwa name or lineage

i sure dont care what the titles are called, if there are good matches and storylines thats all i need

Im not sure how this will work out for TNA. It could be good in that it could give them more of an individual identity instead of piggybacking off the legacy of the NWA (which for all intents and purposes stoped having any real clout after rougly 1990) ill wait and reserve judgement on this till i see how it plays out.

This isn't a huge surprise.

There was an article about this happening around this time like a year ago. TNA I think has to pay royalties to use the NWA titles and name and I think they decided after their agreement with the NWA ran out, they'd go their own route.

The only bad thing is that the NWA World Heavyweight Championship sounds a lot better than the TNA World Heavyweight Championship.

I'm curious about the storyline this will go down in, though.

AZT is the medicine that people with HIV take.˙ Anyways, any ideas on how they're going to split the titles away?˙ Will there be a story or a cop out?

what if they make no mention of the switch and just refer to the titles as tna titles as if it never was anything else before that

I just hope the new title design doesn't have any "spinny" parts to it.

It's now official. (http://one.revver.com/watch/267425/flv/affiliate/87879) The titles have been stripped of the champs. Meanwhile the TNA PPV is still going on. I wonder how it'll be explained on TV.

They took the bitch move and just decided to call them the World Tag Team and World Heavyweight Championship titles.

I might be wrong because there was a controversial finish and according to some websites I read the plan is to have the title be stripped from TNA and then have a new TNA World Heavyweight Champion crowned at Slammiversary in the King of the Mountain match.

here it is from tna's website

KURT ANGLE STRIPPED OF THE TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE – CORNETTE ANNOUNCES KING OF THE MOUNTAIN MATCH

Following last Sunday’s “Sacrifice”, controversy surrounded the TNA World Heavyweight Title, as Kurt Angle, Christian Cage and Sting all claimed they should rightfully be champion. As a result of what took place at the Pay-Per-View, Jim Cornette stripped Kurt Angle of the TNA World Title and announced that a new champion would be crowned in the King of The Mountain Match at Slammiversary! The first qualifying bout took place on Thursday night, with Angle beating “The War Machine” Rhino to advance to the Pay-Per-View bout!
