I'm not going to force my kid into sports, but I wil certainly ENCOURAGE her to participate in sports. I did a little bit of everything - sports, music, drama, etc. My parents let me try what I wanted, but I also had to follow-through with whatever I tried. I wasn't allowed to quit in the middle, even if I didn't like it or I got hurt. I know it made me a better person.

I agree with Dave. I made my son play every sport one time. Kids need to Experance it. After one time if he does not want to play the he does not have to. Now he want to play guitar, so I signed him up. The teacher said he is the youngest he has ever had, so that is cool.

I'm with Dave so far as the kid should at least try to participate in sports. You can learn alot from sports that goes beyond physical coordination. However, if the kid is full of anxiety and thinks sports is torture then you don't need to push them any farther.

I think Fez is pushing too far the other way - sometimes kids need a little nudge out of the nest/out of their comfort zone.

You can learn alot from sports that goes beyond physical coordination. However, if the kid is full of anxiety and thinks sports is torture then you don't need to push them any farther.

I think Fez is pushing too far the other way - sometimes kids need a little nudge out of the nest/out of their comfort zone.

I agree to a point. It IS good to try to get kids to toughen up. BUT, when the kid makes it achingly clear that this is not for him, DO NOT make him continue with it. It just breeds resentment and anxiety.

Whoever said to make them finish out the season is right on. Kids need to learn how to stick with a commitment. Just don't make it an issue when the kid doesn't want to go out for it next year.
This message was edited by Aqualad on 3-7-07 @ 1:48 PM
Completely agree, and I'm glad I caught your edit. You need to stick to the immediate commitment. At least try it - if you don't like it you don't have to do it next season.
