SO.

I have been at my job for a little under 4 years now.... hired as a Customer Service Rep and now called Account Service Coordinator blablabla. The pay is semi-decent but does not equate what we are expected to do here. I have had days where I thought I was going to just walk out because of the workload/insane clients/corporate bs/etcetcetc....

Well.... today I found out that the group of people they just hired were hired at the Manager and Territory Manager level. Brand New people who know nothing about the industry, and even less about the intricate workings of our company. (and it is a complicated position only because of the internal policies and requirements) This is the kind of company that one comes into and really works their way through the ranks... otherwise you would be left flailing in a sea of information.

So now....these people, who do very little at this point and know virtually nothing about what it is they are supposed to be doing at the managerial level, are making thousands of dollars more than I am. Right now they don't even have their own territories... so they are doing menial tasks and not doing them very well because of their newness which creates ineffiency across the board.

I have Anger.

It's very very common. Unfortunately, the only way to make more money nowadays is to jump jobs. I've been working 12 hour days on a regular basis, doing analyst level work as an assistant, and asked for a raise and title change recently. I got a 83 cent raise. The new admin hired on a year ago schedules calendar invites and makes $5-6k more than me. DID I MENTION HR ACCIDENTALLY SENT ME A LIST OF EVERYONE IN THE COMPANY AND HOW MUCH MONEY THEY MAKE?

It really does suck. The only thing you can do is get another job :(

First of all:

Second, I agree with Missy. Sounds like you need to shop around for a new job because they plan on hiring from outside rather than promote so you've probably hit the glass ceiling. Maybe talk to a headhunter?

But then what do I know? I haven't had a real job in three years now. I'm thinking of becomming a shrubber.

That sounds like an insane amount of bullshit. Honestly, you should DISCREETLY look into working somewhere else- maybe I am naive, but I refuse to believe that everywhere operates like that. That just doesn't sound like a workplace I would want to be part of.

i've been in a corporation for the past 19 years and know exactly how you feel. one thing i think i learned over the years is you shouldn't get upset at the new hires, you can't blame someone for doing well for themselves(unless they stab you in the back to get it) You have to direct your unhappiness at your manager because he is the one who hired them at a higher salary.

this is how these corporations work and you have to understand your own threshold as to how much you are willing to put up with. i've seen many people complain alot but never do anything to find work elsewhere. then there are others who just make a decision they aren't taking it anymore and find another job

Since I started at my (thankless) job almost 6 years ago, I've heard one of the most useful pieces of advice I've ever received:

People are always promoted to their highest level of incompetence.

And it's SO true.

If corporate America were a meritocracy, these dunderheads would be out on their asses. Instead, they're the ones based at corporate headquarters making the big decisions that trickle down into my site's daily drudgery.

At my company, I've gotten incremental raises over the years (1%-5% range) in addition to adjustments to bring me to different levels, so, while I feel like I make a shit-wage, I'm tolerably certain that newer folks hired in different offices are making around the same or less because of the differences in costs of living between our sites. I may resent it slightly, but I've got enough to worry about. . .although, their performance is slowly becoming one of my biggest concerns! We can't have people on our team who were (1) hired last year and (2) are STILL not up-to-speed. (We also can't have people who were hired at the start of the team in 2005 and are still not up-to-speed, but, apparently, it's really hard to fire someone here for not having a brain.)

Plus, I'm in publishing, which tends to pay crap, although I do OK since I'm not in a "trade books" or a magazine environment. . .the pay is low and the hours are whatever I want. Lately, due to company-wide budget cuts and restructuring to "realign with the [new company business model]," my OT hours need to be pre-approved by my managers, so I can only log a 35-hour week.

I'm not sure what I'd make if I jumped ship now, but I could negotiate a better starting salary based on my diverse experience here at the company - I've held several titles since starting and worked in different areas of the production processes, so I have a lot of skills to bring somewhere else.

You may just want to get out of customer service - the pay, hours and stress are usually killers! (I used to work a "customer service" type job in college and, while I loved my job, I interviewed at some CS jobs after graduation that were constantly hiring. . .says a lot about an industry when you're constantly hiring to beat turnover!) Take a long look at your other skills, or maybe the skills you've developed while working in CS, and see a headhunter about a resume critique and help finding new jobs.

Good luck and don't let the bastards grind you down.

I actually had my review today which was basically glowing.... cause i am cewl. lol

But at the completion, I advised my Dept head of my concerns and my intentions. Given the fact that they are still quite short staffed and my accounts are very demanding, I will play my hand and see what they can show me.

However, I am still putting my resume out there... I want to see what I am worth out there in the big skeery world! wheee

Another one bites the dust!

Today another new-ish person left for "personal reasons". Yay!

On Monday, I went in with my list of demands - mainly telling my Dept Head exactly what they will need to pay me to keep me from giving my notice. So if they deny me now... I will be more than happy to go-a-searchin elsewhere. But this new development may help my cause....

This is NOT the place I want to be for another 4 years... but right now I am in a very *transitional* place in my life. I would like to stay planted until some other decisions are made about just where I will be spending the next year of my existence once my lease is up in NJ.

Happy Ides of March!

Try working for a gas utility thats about to be taken over by a foreign owned company. Management makes decisions and we have to suffer as the bumble along until everything blows up in their faces and only then do they learn what you already know, and you have to go back to the old way again.
