Well, the title shows how little i know about the topic. I went to the doctor, and, without telling the whole story, he says i have a 50% chance of my illness being limes disease. What is Lime Disease? I know you get it from ticks, but what does it do? Does it turn you into that girl from real world seattle (she's the only person i've known who has it ;) What can it do? I'm on doxysicline or something now, but my bloodwork wont get back till next week. I just want to know all my options ;)

i actually have lymes disease. i was diagnosed over the summer.. if you catch it in time you can get rid of it, if not you will have it for a long time. basicly the symptoms are stiff ache in your joints. you have flu like symptoms and you can have trouble breathing and iregular heart rates. the worst possible thing that may happen is you start to lose your memory. its hard to get that bad these days cause treatments have gotten so much better.. i have my checkup again soon and ill know for sure then if its gone.. my fingers are crossed.

Lyme disease was "discovered" in Lyme, Connecticut in 1977.
It can cause all sorts of symptoms including arthritis (even in kids) and nuerological problems. It has been linked to psychosis but I do not believe that has been definitively established.
Lyme disease is transmitted by the bite of certain species of ticks. NOTE: IT IS NOT TRANSMITTED BY DOG TICKS, but rather the the bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferie is transmitted via deer ticks.
About 16,000-17,000 people in the US are infected each year.
Most people bitten by an infected tick can be successfully treated with antibiotic therapy when diagnosed in the early stages of Lyme disease. It can be detected by a characteristic "bulls-eye" rash that spreads from the source of the bit. If not detected early treatment is problematic.

CIRCUS BOY - Wow, this information was very hard to track down.
Limes are photosensitizers causing their own "Lime Disease" (yes it's a pun.)
The most effective photosensitizer in limes is something called "bergapten". Arizona Persian limes are more likelely to cause reactions than Florida Key limes.
Non-dermatologists frequently misdiagnose phytophotodermatitis due to lemons and limes. In ten successive cases referred to dermatologists in San Diego County, CA, they were variably diagnosed as allergic contact dermatitis from poison oak, atypical bruising: rule out malignancy, cellulitis, child abuse, erythema multiforme, fungal infection, impetigo, infectious lymphangitis, and thrombocytopenic purpura
You're extremely fortunate that your doctor picked this up!

i almost got lyme disease once.
i went on an overnight school trip to a park in upstate new york.
when i came home i spotted a tick on the side of my hip. i took the little sucker out and flushed it down the toilet (i should have probably saved it).
my mother took me to the doctor and i got some shots and antibiotics and whatnot.
i heard somewhere that the symptoms of lyme disease can take a longtime to show up and that people can go a longtime without knowing they even have it.
scary.

I think that if I had Mr. HK as my advisor when I was King...er, I mean President, I would still be in power. It wouldn't matter that I'm dead now, I really think that HK would still have me in power!!!

Lyme disease is not too
much to worry about,
especially since if you do
have it you seem to have
caught it early. They'll
probably put you on some
antibiotics like doxycycline
that will make you really
sick (don't you love
antibiotics that do that?)
and you'll be just fine.
You can find answers to
most of your questions
online... but if you have
specific questions about
Ixodes (the tick that carries
it) or Borrelia (the
spirochete that gives you
the disease) lemme know. I
work with like the world
expert on lyme disease :)
<img src="http://gvac.50megs.com/images/toocute2.jpg">
Don't be too worried about Lyme disease; lots of people get it in the northeast each year. What has probably happened is a little tick bit you about a week or two ago when you were outside and gave you a bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi. This bug causes you to get a fever, headache, tiredness, stiffness, and most importantly a "bulls-eye" rash. That bulls-eye rash usually indicates lyme disease. Based on these finding the doc gave you doxycycline, an antibiotic that stops the bacteria from making proteins. The doc will check your blood to make sure that your symptoms are in fact due to Borrelia. Most importantly though, now that you got started with antibiotics early, you don't have to worry too much about the bug spreading too far into your body. Good luck. (this was a really lame addition to the board on my part, considering it is really my first contribution.)
