View Full Version : My Dad was rushed to the hospital

So I get home Saturday night and call my parents to let them know I arrived back. I talk to my Dad and give him a quick recap of my trip, adding that I'd give him the full version tomorrow.

The next day my Mom calls me and says that she took my Dad to the hospital that morning because he had intense stomach pains and nausea. They get him to the hospital and it turns out that he has to have immediate surgery to remove his gall bladder which is loaded with gall stones.

So the surgery went well but the doctors said they had never seen gall stones that big before. One was described as the size of a tennis ball. My Mom is going to pick him up today and take him home and he should be back to normal in 3 weeks or so.

I just wondered if anyone had a similar procedure or had a friend/relative who did? Just wondering about the long-term implications. Thanks.

My dad has had it twice. Once he had the gall bladder removed the second time the used lasers on his kidneys to get the stones out. It was pretty intense pain that he felt. After surgery he was fine. The gallbladder had him down about a month but the laser was only a couple days. Reeshy is a RN and would probably know more about it than me.

Good luck bro. Once he has the surgery he will be fine.

Did he have laparoscopy surgery or was it the more invasive sx ?

With the lap/chole procedure , he should be up and about sooner. but either way, he should be just fine.

THe old gallbladder is one of those organs we can get along without.

Hope for a speedy recovery

No one in mu immediated family has had that surgery but I always hear my mom tell me so and so had that removed and it seems to be an old person thing that really doesn't effect anything else in the body.

He will be fine.

Sorry you have to deal with this but it sounds like good news. I pray he will recover fully and has no further problems.

Sorry to hear you had to go through this AJ. But, as others have stated, the gall bladder is something you can live without and not be any worse off for it. Thoughts & prayers for a speedy recovery to your dad.

Wow, it sucks getting that call, right? Im sure he will be ok. On a similar note, I just got back from seeing my gastro guy. My family Dr saw very high elevations on my pancreatic enzimes, and he had me run a buch of tesets and see this Dr I just saw, who had me do MRI's and stuff. Its been a scary few weeks for me. They had me doing blood tests every few weeks and the levels started going down. Then, this last test it went back up again. He thinks it might have been from when I was drinking, which was over 6 months since I stopped, so it is kind of weird. He doesnt seem to know what it can be, so even he is referring me to another gastro guy who leads the hospital department, who I will see next month. So he told me it is possible that my gall bladder might be shedding these crystals that inflame the pancreas, and if this is the case, I will need my gall bladder taken out. They didnt see any gallstones in the MRI.

Glad he came through all right. That after all is the important thing. You will get over the scare soon enough.

Hey A.J., I hope all works out well for your dad and that he has a speedy recovery.

All my best to you and your dad AJ.

My dad went through the same ordeal about 10 years ago and he's been fine ever since. Doctors make it sound like it's no big deal and I guess they're right.

My Mom had these, but never that severe. Me, you, Angelina, must be an Italian thing.

I'm sure it freaked you out, but he should be fine.

Just to update, I spoke to Dad last night. Mom brought him back home and propped him up on the couch. He sounded pretty good considering there was some residual post-operative pain and him trying to get used to dealing with the stitches. Fortunately, he has a nice supplies of Percosets to hep himself up on.

Thanks to you guys who gave me more info about this procedure as well as your experiences. I wanted to give Dad some reassurance that things will be OK by saying "people I know who have had it done said..."

More importantly, thank you for all of your good thoughts. You guys are the best.
