First is it being an infinite series, going on not very very very very far, but forever.

Second is really just another consequence of the the above. Pi is irrational, it cant be descibed as a ratio of two fractions, no matter how big they are. The pythagoreans didnt like this at all when they realized the square root of two, the hypotenuse of a square with a side of 1, was irrational. They thought numbers were perfect, absolute, such that all numbers could be derived from other numbers, and suppressed knowledge about the square root of two.

So the word irrational, which originally was a simple math term meaning something cant be described as a ratio, got a second meaning; something that doesnt make sense, even dangerous.

I actually didn't know that one. I heard something, like the pythagoreans had an equilateral triangle tattooed on there hands. That seems to jive with them liking perfect, absolute things.

I used to have this book, the joy of pi. I think I lost it. But anyway, it had a whole bunch of cool pi stories. There was one about Euler (I think), and how he was figuring out digits of pi. He wrote his friend and told him that he was embarrased with the number of digits he figured out, because it took such a long time. That's pretty cool.
