last year my girlfriend brought in a lot of basil fom my garden at the end of summer and put it in a vase and we used it for a week or two. not long afterwards we started noticing these little flies/gnats occasionally. I didn't see them too much over the winter. now that's it warmed up, they are everywhere. they breed in your house plants. i am in the process of drying out my plants hoping to kill all the larva and i've put flypaper up. they are driving me freaking nuts. the gnats clearly are attracted to water becuase they die in my dog's water bowl all of the time. if these things aren't gone by saturday i am planning on throwing away all of my house plants. this sucks because i have some nice plants - a monster sage plant i've had since 1996 etc... has anyone else ever had a problem with these gnats?

i initially thought they were some kind of fruit fly but after doing some research it turns out they are fungus gnats

on a side note, i once took the master jar of fruit flys from a genetics class lab and put it under a guys bed in my dorm. he had fruit flies in his room for the entire year and could never figure out where they coming from
