View Full Version : Music recommendation thread

I am not sure if this thread exsists but I did look and could not find it so........

I am a big fan of music and unfortunately there is not much good music on the radio these days.

I figured that we can help each other out by posting some good "underground" music that most of us can't hear on the radio like local bands. I personally would love some recommendations!!

I will start with this one....

Ballyhoo!

there website is www.ballyhoorocks.com or www.myspace.com/ballyhoo

They are an unsigned band out of Maryland. They have a very similar sound to Sublime and put on a great live show.

Hey guys,*>On tuesday Dovecote Records released There Is A Moth In Your Chest by Mason Proper. You can check out the band at their myspace page. If you dig it you can buy the album from iTunes but if you collect vinyl we did a really cool promotional thing with one of my favorite record stores in the country. Shake It Records in Cincinnati is selling the record for 12 bucks and you get a free picture disc 7" of the single "My My (Bad Fruit)" as well as a signed poster. But you can also get the record at your local record store. Anyways I hope you dig it, they'll be playing at the Gramercy Theatre (a new venue in manhattan) with Birdmonster on March 31st. *>Thanks again duders.*>C

I've listened to some of Carter's music on their myspace page, they can throw down. the only thing I can think of to compare it to is a band like Hot Water Music.

Some more music to recommend, depending on what you like:

Firewater - for all you drinkers out there

Tin Hat Trio - for all you avant garde blue-grass fans

Gogol Bordello - for all you Eastern European punk rock fans

Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East - for all you fans of music. (Holy Shit)

Jets to Brazil - for all you emotion filled post-teens and fans of unreal lyricism

Anything by Joe Strummer - just beacause he was the fucking coollest person to ever live.

I mentioned him before in this thread, but I really feel I have to reiterate him with this band in particular: I've been listening to Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros lately, and I have to say the work he did with this group is unreal, after hearing this I would have to say that Joe Strummer is probably one of the most underatted songwriters (compared to his contemperaries, Elvis Costello, Shane McGowan, etc.).

I write this a few days ago in another music thread.. but I think its relevant here.
New stuff I'm listening to:
Kings of Leon - Because of the Times
Dr. Dog - We All Belong. These guys are from Philly. Rolling Stone just did an article on them. Anyone heard of them?
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
The new Arcade Fire album is great too. Just got tickets to see them at Radio City.
Also an old album I just picked up is Van Morrison - Its Too Late to Stop Now. Its a live album from the 70s and its great.
