i usually go scissors the first time because from my experience a lot of people go for paper thinking you are going to throw rock.

rock, paper, scissors is probably the best way ever to solve an arguement. when the kids i work with at the ymca get in any arguement about a game i always tell them to solve it with r/p/s and it always solves the problem.

I start with scissors because most people start with scissors, it's the most aggressive gesture, for an aggressive game. I'll lead with a tie because I've also found that most people will follow with whatever beats their previous, suspecting that the opposition will stick with it. Hence I will follow scissors with paper. Then, as where I come from we do 2 out of 3, I'll follow with what loses to their previous, as they'll will be certain I won't double up, but may have caught on to my strategy, so I reverse it.
