However, Mr, Spector is indeed deserving of this title. Listening to some of his work and taking into account the limited technology he was using at the time ( no pro- tools or digital work stations) it's difficult NOT to admire and /or respect his accomplishments and contributions to the recording industry. Very few producers have a true signature sound - Spector was one of the first.

For decades, he was a recluse, hiding in his hilltop suburban castle. Then a B-movie actress was shot and killed there, and Spector could no longer avoid the headlines. In the four years since the death of Lana Clarkson, Spector and his lawyers have claimed that she shot herself. He simply claims - "she kissed the gun"

He is charged with murder in the shooting death of actor Lana Clarkson (no relation to the reporter), who was found dead in a chair inside Spector's suburban L.A. mansion on Feb. 3, 2003. Her mouth had been blown out by a gunshot.

"'I think I killed somebody,'" Spector was quoted as saying by his chauffeur, Adriano De Souza. The chauffeur also told a grand jury that Spector had emerged from his mansion holding a gun, with blood on his hands. ...

On Monday, the search began for jurors to decide if the 66-year-old Spector is guilty of murdering Lana Clarkson on Feb. 3, 2003, after taking her home with him from the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip.

Clarkson was found slumped dead in a chair in the foyer, her teeth blown out by a gunshot to her mouth.

The coroner's office called it a homicide -"death by the hand of another" _ but also noted that Clarkson had gunshot residue on both of her hands and may have pulled the trigger.

TV audiences may be riveted by Spector's appearance, since his theatrical attire usually includes three-inch-high boots, frock coats and outlandish wigs and noid-like hair.

Fidler summoned 300 prospective jurors to his courtroom for the start of jury selection. Time will be an issue for the panel members, since the proceedings could last three months.

A jury is expected to be seated by April 30.

Stay

(from the smoking gun)

MARCH 20--With jury selection underway in his Los Angeles murder trial, Phil Spector will soon be faced with the potentially damaging words he uttered hours after actress Lana Clarkson died in the record producer's mansion.

Spector, who recently ironed some of the crazy out of his fright-wig hairdo, was tape recorded as he spoke with Detective Esther Pineda of the Alhambra Police Department about the February 2003 death of actress Lana Clarkson, who died of a gunshot wound. Spector, who was in custody, began to fly off the handle after Pineda told him he was being charge with murdering the 40-year-old Clarkson.

After requesting to speak with lawyer Robert Shapiro and two business associates, a frustrated Spector, 67, seemed to snap. "I'm gonna make you fucking people pay for this. This is bullshit," said Spector. He then claimed that Clarkson, whom he met at the House of Blues nightclub, was a "piece of shit" who came into his home and committed suicide. "I don't know what her fucking problem was, but she certainly had no right to come to my fucking castle, blow her fucking head open," he added.

Inside sources are reporting that Mr. Spector slept peacefully last night although reports indicated that the the brilliant producer DID pass gas at 3:15 am.

Ironicly, in 1973 on the only hit Martha Daines ever had " stinky sky", Spector sang the subliminal back up line - " at 3am i - i farted on a cloud"

spooky eh?

update as of today -
Not much new. Still in the begining stages.
LOS ANGELES - Prosecutors in the Phil Spector murder case have asked a judge to allow testimony from a one-time girlfriend who said the record producer pointed a gun at her head in two separate incidents decades ago.
In court documents filed Tuesday, Deputy District Attorney Alan Jackson said the testimony demonstrates a “long history of gun-related violence directed at women” and should be admitted as evidence during Spector’s upcoming trial on charges he killed actress Lana Clarkson in February 2003.

Technically, he hasn't "gotten away" yet. Mistrial means they couldn't reach a verdict. He can be tried again with a whole new jury.
Practically, it does make it less likely he'll ever been convicted. The prosecutor could decide that if they can't convince this jury, their case isn't strong enough to convince another jury, so without new evidence why go through with another trial.
