How is it discrimination if they're unwilling to do the job? I worked at a Target one summer in college, and you're expected to work wherever they put you. So that demand to do the job you're hired for argument will never fly, since the job they hire you for is to work in whatever part of the store they tell you to.

Will there have to be a "Jew-free lane" for them too?

I know it's not exactly the same thing, but what do you guys think would happen if a Catholic check out clerk refused to touch any meat on Fridays during lent? I don't get it, don't take a job as a cahier if you don't want to handle certain items. Don't be a pharmasist if you don't want to handle birth control.

Am I the only person that's sick of seeing stories like this? I'm not referring to the subject matter, but the manner in which the press takes what is basically an isolated incident and distorts it so it seems like a national problem just to incite public outcry.

I know the media has done things like this for years, but it seems to be getting more and more absurd. It sounds like this whole story focuses around one cashier that's an ass. It's very similar to the couple of people at Kroger pharmacies that wouldn't issue the morning after pill. The more the media gives attention to lone idiots, the more lone idiots there will be seeking attention for their beliefs.

This is my favorite part of the story:

Some Filthy Savage told the AP this past week he quit his job at the Sam’s Club in Bloomington after he was transferred from another position to cashiering and was ordered to ring up pork purchases.

Several times on his first day as a cashier, Filthy Savage, said customers brought pork products to his register. He asked them to take their goods to another register, and a customer complained to management.

“They told me, you have to check this,” Filthy Savage said. “I told them, I can’t do this. You want me to do something that’s against my religion.”

Filthy Savage said a manager told him that was part of the job, so “I just put down my uniform and I left.”

He said it doesn’t matter if the pork product is packaged. “Even if you just sell it to someone, you break a promise to Allah,” he said.

HA! I'm going to start throwing boiled ham at people who refuse to sell me pork. Fuck your God and your mother.

This isn't about me, it's about YOU.

Get yourself some Mr. Clean Neoprene Gloves and you can do that whole Cashier thing, no problem. Until they put you on the Express lane.
What if the customer just went to a different cashier to have their pork rung up? Wouldn't the Filthy Savage in Moe's scenario still be breaking a promise to Allah by taking a paycheck from an employer who sold pork?

I love it when people are so religious and inflexible in their beliefs when it suits their purposes, but think that their same all powerful and strict invisible man in the sky is going to let them slide on a mere technicality. "Oh, that pork was rung up on Register 6. I was working Register 5. See Allah, here's my timecard as proof. Can I have my 72 virgins now?"

Marc with a c wrote:
who buys pork from target?
People who have SuperTargets in their area, so mostly people in the South. SuperTarget is a full-service grocery store AND Target all rolled into one. Regular Targets and Target Greatland stores may carry some basic groceries (mostly non-perishables, OJ, frozen foods and milk) but they are not as big or fully stocked at SuperTarget.

They have a full-service deli, a bakery, Starbucks (evil), produce department, meat, seafood, etc. - the place is FASCINATING.
Basically this started with Target allowing pharmacists to choose whether or not they wanted to dispense "morning after pills".
