i don't know. i think that this whole service is pointless. when i do order from places that have this, i simply tell them i will come inside. i just feel like such a fat ass having them walk the forty feet to my car to hand me my food. forget the fact that i am ordering the happy-triple-bacon-quesadilla deep fried in sour cream.

BUT i would tip them if i did take advantage of it. i'll throw someone a couple bucks just for having to deal with the awkwardness of the whole situation.

i don't tip when i go inside, though. i work at a restaurant and the host is the person preparing to go orders. they always make more than minimum wage. it's unnecessary.

I tip service, not food. How much does the cook see? zero.

Service = refilling drink, tending to needs. Not giving me a bag of food.

Its a tough one. You tip for service, and if they don't even bring it out to you, then you're not getting a lot of service. I always try to err on the side of giving too much of a tip than too little, so I would throw a few bucks at them, but its not the same as sitting down, occupying a table, and dirtying up their dishes.

I might throw a few dollars for a big diner take out order but basic take out is another story. The Outback or Applebees" to go kids" double check the order and take the initial order. I tip them because if you have seen that place when it's busy you would understand it does take a little concentration to get it right.

If they bring it to the car... then i guess you should throw them a few bucks. I've never actually gotten takeout from a place that does this. Normal takeout is a different story.. I'm not being waited on, I'm picking the food up myself.

i get food from the diner or a restraunt/bar all the time for takeout. i never leave a tip. i see the food come out from the back and its always in bags and the person who gets it for me is usually only working the register at the diner. for the tip at least you have to take on the risk of dropping food or drink on me. if i did the roadside pickup thing, which i would never do, i would tip a few bucks.

hell yes u cheap bastards
i was once in this position and what i would do was i would go out and collect the money first.
you stiff me i would leave something off/spit in ur ranch what have you.
These people make the same hourly wage as the people inside, they deal with more customers per nite (more orders) and deal with all the common complaints, so forth.
Not only is a tip expected by the take out people, it might be a mistake not to.

No chance. they are not remembering orders, balancing plates, checking on you, topping off drinks, or making you feel at home. That falls in the waiting tbales decription. Taking a bag to a car is one step closer than them carrying out the trash. Shut up and do your job.
Oh, and I am in the restaurant business

These people aren't volunteering, they have a job. It's the employer's job to pay these people, not mine. Do you people just tip everyone? WHat's next, tipping bartenders?
