View Full Version : Cannonball run NJ style?

A buddy and I were talking about the movie Cannonball run and how it could be done/should be done.

We both decided that for a real run to work it would have to be more local to whoever is interested. So we came up with the theory for where in the Tri-state area it would work.

We both agreed that NJ might be best suited for a run for several reasons...

A) it has several points of interest of where to have the start/stop line

B) The two main roads we would have this on run north to south in almost a direct line (The NJ turnpike or the Garden State Parkway)

C) If you do it at the right time or day and year the traffic will be minimal and not as much of a problem.

D) if you know the area then you could avoid any, if all, traffic jams and or construction.

He suggested maybe we do it from North NJ by the NY state Border to the Deleware Memorial Bridge. (I looked at him like he's nuts...why Deleware??)

I say have it from the NY/NJ State line area (Like by Dave and Busters at the Palisades mall) and have it to Atlantic City OR Wildwood. a 3-4 hour race at most. Nothing that would take 3 days to run (although I bet THAT would be a fun one as well)

We said you needed three things:

1- in order for the money to be worth it you need enough teams to make it worthwhile.

2- You would need a group/team to clock in the start times of each car. They go one at a time, not all at once. (safer start that way)

3- you would need a group/team already at the finish line to log in each person who crosses the finish line. At the end of the race, the fastest time, not always the 1st person to cross the finish line, wins.

So....I ask you my fellow insane board members. If it went down do you think it would work?

Any flaws in the theory? ASIDE from the obvious "Speeding is breaking the law" kinda thing.

I'm sorry, but the idea of keeping it in one state, and even in one part of the country is pretty lame. Its gotta be an endurance challenge, and if you can do it with out even having to refill your gas tank once, its not a serious race.

Well I like the FL idea but the only problem is, real life gets in the way. You would have to take off almost a week to do a run like that.

So unless you want to take a weeks vacation doing a race down the east coast it would have to be something you can do in a weekend. But maybe a run to Baltimore or DC would be an idea also.

But nothing that would take more then one full 24 hour day to get to.

I figure it takes 8 to 12 hours to get to North Carolina and tack on another 8 to get to Florida this could take a 3 day weekend and could be done, like someone said it's not the first team there it's the best time
