i want to hear about your local foods- and i dont mean generally like im from philly we have cheesesteaks etc etc i mean shit thats only in your neighborhood.

in norristown we eat zeps- basically a hoagie made of provolone and cooked salami with thick slices of tomato and onion, oil and oregano. its especially good with hoagie spread, which are minced/pickled hot peppers. they started at a small sandwich shop called lou's, which opened a sister shop called eves that you can see from my moms front yard. a few places around started making them, but if you go as far as into the city you cant get them.

I grew tomatoes in my back yard last summer, does that count?
It seems ultra local... to me at least...

In my town there is a breakfast place that serves Mexican-style food. They serve a variation of the huevos rancheros that is awesome. A huge plate with eggs, pork, tortilla, beans, potatos, and smothered with a green chili sauce.

That's because even "vine ripened" tomatoes are picked green for shipping purposes. They're just picked later than the regular ones, but still green. Tomatoes bruise so easily that you really cant ship them fresh. So the ones from your backyard will always be better than anything you can buy, unless you're buying directly from a farm stand upstate.

Local is actually something of a movement in the upscale food biz. Farmers markets are popping up everywhere, and people are trying to get back to locally grown seasonal eating. The way they do it in Europe, Mexico and most of the rest of the world. There's some environmental reasons (less fuel used) and with so many small farmers going under due to the big agri-biz there's a desire to help out the little guy as well. But I just like the old world way of living. The produce is better and cheaper when its in season, and by the time its not you're sick of eating that stuff anyway and are ready to move on to the next season.

Sorry for the Yerdaddy-length response. Back on topic, the ultimate local experience for me is a good, Italian bread bakery. Which seems to be harder and harder to find these days. Fresh Semolina is better than sex.

Eve's also has the best cheesesteaks, bar none. That's if you can order them before they run out of rolls.

That's one of the great things about living up here. During the summer the fresh local food is awesome, especially the corn. People have stands set up in their front yards with the corn in it and a place to leave the money. It's all on the honor system. I must eat fresh corn 4 times a week during the summer. And I always pay.

i'm a student at rutgers new brunswick, so there is obviously a bunch of good food that is terrible for you.

what we're famous for are our fat sandwiches. my personal favorite is the "fat bitch". cheesesteak, chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, french fries, lettuce, tomato, mayo and ketchup all on a hoagie roll. they come in all sorts of disguting combinations including gyro meat, bacon, egg, taylor ham, onion rings, hamburger, etc...

http://images.usatoday.com/news/_photos/2004/08/19/inside-sandwich.jpg

i think the "fat darrel" won some sandwich competition in maxim magazine.

Johns Deli In Brooklyn ( Stillwell ave off 86th Street ) A lot of good heros; but the best is on wed, thu, sat and sun when it's med rareroast beef with real mozzerela carmelized onions and a really thick gravy. All toasted on good local Italian bread

here in North Central NJ, there is a little sammich called the Sloppy Joe that is all the rage.

Unlike the read meat and orangey sauce on a bun that I grew up with as a SJ in New York, this sandwich consists of Turkey, Roast Beast and I think either Ham or Corned Beef along with Coleslaw and a Thousand Island type of special dressing on white or wheat bread.
It IS indeed delicious... and I have not seen it on any of my travels to other states/regions....

The best come from Mr J's in Cranford.

If you really dig that kind of Sloppy Joe, you have to try the Milburn Deli. Expensive, and usually crowded as hell too, but the sammich is worth the trip. And if you like Iced Tea, they make their own & it is apparently the best stuff going - they sell it by the half gallon.

I live (for the next 4 months anyway), a couple blocks from Grimaldi's Pizza in Brooklyn. For all the hype it gets (Voted #1 in magazines often, Food network profiles), the Pizza is really that good and worth the wait in line. I will definitely miss living there.

The Fat Darrel was invented when I was a freshman (1996-97) and the creator (that's Darrel himself in that thar photo you glommed from Maxim) was profiled in the Targum that spring.

Personally, I like the Veggie Fat Cat, with extra hot sauce. From Jimmy's on Easton Avenue.

Dude, Adobe Blues on Staten Island blows Tejas right out of the water. Killer Tex-Mex food, hundreds of beers from around the world, reasonable prices, and live blues and jazz music just about every night. If you've never been there do yourself a favor and go check it out!

In Arizona you can get that a similar. HOt dog, ground beef, onions, green chili and tomatoes wrapped in a tortilla instead of on a bun. I used to smuggle these into Phoenix Suns games.

I have been driving past that place for a while now and have always wanted to stop in, I found it odd that there was a food place dedicated to sloppy joe's but now that I have heard about it from someone else I feel compelled to stop there sometime soon. So you're saying the Sloppy Joe's at these places are not the standard meat and red sauce on a bun? I've never once heard of this. I really thought that Mr. J's was a place dedicated to ground beef sandwiches.

I think my mind has just been destroyed by the concept.

Speaking of central NJ things, we here love Italian Hotdogs.

The best come from a place named Jimmy Buff's on Rt. 22:

http://www.jimmybuff.com/

They're hot dogs or sausages on a pita roll piled up with onions, peppers, and potatoes. You get a fork with them to eat the stuff with and usually come with mustard.

Also, from my frequent trips to Buffalo, back in the day...

Beef on Weck!
Thinly sliced roast beef, with a bit of jus and horseradish served on almost a kieser roll, but with a salty pretzel-like crust.
Yum!! Gimme that and a case of splits, please!

I LOVE YOU HOTTUB! im gonna get one from my favorite place on my birthday on friday night! do you ever come to buffalo anymore?

edit: kimmelweck roll

The author writes:
What exactly is a Kimmelweck Roll? It's a hard roll, more specifically a crusty Kaiser roll, sprinkled with caraway and coarse salt instead of the more familiar poppy seed topping. Shape the dough into a loaf to bake Vienna bread or shape it into thin ropes for salt and pepper sticks, a great snack in lieu of pretzels.

Kaufman's is the biggest of the bakeries in Buffalo that still make kimmelweck rolls. The owner, Jay Freedman, can personally recall at least forty years of baking "wecks" for the hardy beef on weck lunch so favored by generations of the town's German and Polish communities. It's never faded as a lunchtime tradition.

Northern CA checkin in,
We've got these little catering trucks that spread out across the counties every morning, we call em taco-trucks, they make the best little tacos you've ever had. All the Mexicans I know say so and when the Latinos like it, you know it's good: small corn tortillas topped with either carne asada (marinated steak), pollo (marinated chicken), shrimp (never tried em, never will), or the best: carnitas, i.e. fried pork, top that with some cilantro, onions, a little lime juice and a side of radish, for a buck a piece you can't beat it. I've known people to take first dates to these places they're so good.

In Arizona we have those. They park down the street from bars to feed the drunks. We called them Wetback Shacks. The food so good, we don't question whether the meat is real cow or dog or cat. I am guessing the latter tho.
