I'm experimenting now, for a sig with a comic book character that looks like it's jumping off the page because the background is the same.

in photoshop elements, i left the background transparent and saved using Save for web and made sure Transparancy was checked so that the image didn't get flattened out

you can delete the area to blend in with the background
