Here us old time Royals fans will share fond memories of George Brett and discuss which developing players currently in our system are the best fits for the Yankees, Mets and Red Sox to help them win championships.

KC Royals...best AAA team in the majors, baby!

I got something Royal related. You payed way to much for Gil Meche and you're going to get your asses kicked the first series of the season.

I'd mock, but even they've won AND been to more World Series since the Cubs last went.

Alex Gordon is the next George Brett. Billy Butler will win batting titles most likely as a DH. Luke Hochevar will be a pretty good #2 starter. They will probably draft Matt Weiters from Georgia Tech, who's a 6'6 switch hitting catcher, who should be a stud. I can see Mark Teahen being a .290 25 homer 15 steal outfielder, Ryan Shealy could hit .280 with 30 homers.

Long term they are going to need arms, so the middle rounds of their drafts will be crucial. Their offense with Gordon, Butler, Teahen, Shealy will be fine. The rotation will need help. Hopefully Greinke can rebound and become a solid #3, a rotation of Hochevar, Meche, Greinke and a free agent signing and draftee won't be too bad.

Yeah I see Alex Gordon as a future Red Sox. Hochevar would look good in mid-relief as a Met.

I miss Johnny Damon, Carlos Beltran and Jermaine Dye...thank baby jesus for fantasy baseball..only way to follow ex-Royals.

I probably will actually try to watch a couple KC games this year to see how Alex Gordon plays but it wont matter if he turns into george brett because he'll end up singing a huge contract somewhere else.

I don't see a reason for the Royals to not sign Gordon long-term. He from Nebraska, he grew up a Royals fan, they haven't spent money in the past, but take a look at what they gave Gil Meche...they will be willing to spend market value for Gordon and Butler. Can a team like the Sox or Yanks give him more money? Of course they can, but not every player signs for the most money. If the Royals play their cards correctly and give Gordon a 5-6 year deal after this season or next season to buy out his arb. years, I think Gordon will give them a hometown discount when he's finally able to file for free agency.

If I were a KC fan I'd be excited that you have two potential studs in Alex Gordon and Billy Butler coming along. I would be excited for the future, what I would be sad about is having to play in the same division as the Tigers and Indians, who will be the best two teams in the division for the next 6 years or so. Its going to be very hard for any team to get into the playoffs in the AL Central for the next few years, let alone the Royals.

The Royals are the worst team in the American League and I see only the Nationals being worse overall, but the Royals have what is shaping up to be a nice future. Gordon and Butler bring hope!

He hasn't actually done anything at the major league level yet, so there's no basis for signing him to any deal. Plus, the Royals have complete control of him for the first three years, which gives them the ability to keep his salary low and use the money to build in other areas.

After his third season, he's arb-eligible, and that's when they should look into a long-term deal to keep down the arbitration era salaries and buy out his first couple years of FA. This is assuming he's actually as good as all of the projections I've seen to date.

Went to a Royals game in 1986. Couldn't figure out why a team in America's heartland played on artificial turf. Oh well, at least they have real grass now.

Well that means they'll have him for at least 7 or 8 seasons if they buy out his arb years with a contract similar to the deals Mauer and Sizemore signed. I see them signing him to a long term deal after next season though, but like you said he has to live up to the expectations. I think they'd rather spend alittle more now on buying out his arb years, then keep him in the 6 digits for 3 years and make him wonder if he wants to be there or not. They did get screwed by signing Berroa long term after he won ROY, but for the most part those type of deals save teams so much money. They also show the player that they are important to their franchise.

I have been a Royals fan since late 70's while my friends in Arizona were jumping on Dodger and Yankee bandwagons. I still follow them even though they suck. You never abandoned your childhood team. Even after we got the Diamondbacks and won a world series, I was sporting my Royals hat to all DBACK home games.

The Royals had a lot of good players come through the system in the 90s and into the 2000s

The organization was so poorly mismanaged, though, they never kept any of them.

For years, the Royals A ball team was in Wilmington, DE...I remember seeing guys like Carlos Beltran, Johnny Damon, Jon Lieber, Mike Sweeney, and Angel Berroa come through.

Unfortunately for the Royals, they signed Sweeney long-term and then basically said they couldn't afford anyone else. Sweeney's never been as good as when he broke in, which has hurt. They should have given the money to Beltran...not that the team's fortunes would be much different, but they'd at least have a legitimate star to hang their hat on.

They've had a bit of a re-birth in terms of prospects the last few years. Alex Gordon, Mark Teahan, Ryan Shealy, Zack Greinke...they've got some good players coming through again. Hopefully they lock some of them down, especially since they've got a new stadium coming, but I'd doubt it.

Beltran really didn't want to stay. I think they could have nailed down Damon though. I was a big Damon fan. He would have stayed for a good price. I was never a Sweeney fan. Till this day I can't figure out why he got the deal.

It certainly didn't help that both Damon and Beltran were Boras clients. That's not going to make it any easier for small market teams to sign their young stars.

In all fairness to your friends, you jumped on a pretty good bandwagon. The Royals put a lot of good teams on the field in the late-70's - mid-80's. It's almost hard to imagine the Royals being competitive, but they were back then.
