Cats could care less if you live or die, but not dogs:

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D8O4N3101&show_article=1

Just another example of how dogs will do just about anything to help their loved-ones.

Yes I said loved-ones because my dog is a member of our family, not just a pet.

Cats are completely different than dogs, you can't compare them to each other. Sounds like
you don't like cats because their not what a dog is, or what a dog does,....
Can a dog be trained to sniff out drugs and a cat can't? Yes.

If you don't like cats it's cool but comparing them like you are is,.. misguided?

F_S Has And Has Had All His Life Both Cats And Dogs. He Has Loved Them All And They Have ALL Been Members Of The Family!

Dogs Are Especially Good For Families With Kids; Cats Are More Appropriate For Adult Households, And For People (Like Fat) That Have To Travel Often.

It's garbage to compare dogs and cats on the basis of that news story. I love my dogs, and have no problem if you dislike cats, but if you think posting that story is 'proof' then I'll supply you with some stories written just this week regarding dogs!

The first link tells how a dog killed a toddler. Second link tells how two girls were randomly attacked by a dog. Third link tells how the dog owners lost $500,000 in a lawsuit after their dog ripped open a woman's face.

Everyone knows this story by now too, but here ya go.

Here, I'll balance this out a little.

http://www.nptelegraph.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=18075698&BRD=377&PAG=461&dept_id=601696&rfi=6

Three people injured in wild house-cat attack. I'm sorry but this story wasn't from this week. Had to do a little searching to find a cat-attack story. As this quote points out:

“I’m on the animal commission and we’ve never seen anything like this,” Gutschenritter said. “We have dealt with dog bites, but we’ve never had one with a cat.”

Yes, I must admit I am a little biased towards dogs and am not much of a cat-lover.

CCC's links of Pit bulls to me is a little off.

I'm not a Pit Bull owner but have many friends who own them. These dogs require alot of attention and 95% of the time it is a negleted Pit Bull that is a bad Pit Bull. Every time I go to my friends and see their pits, I'm more scared of getting licked to death than mauled.

It is the dog owners that give these wonderful pets a bad name.

I have had both and I cant tell you currently I have two cats and your claims are unfounded.
My cats get all excited when I come home..just like dogs.
My cats love playing catch....just like dogs.
My Cats try to follow me out the door and miss me when I am gone....just like dogs.
My cats sit and watch TV and are always intersted in what Im doing...just like dogs
Their love and devotion is just as much as a a dog..or any pet for that matter- there is nothing special about dogs except that they are easily dominated and trained.

Here are the upsides of cats.
They dont hump my friends legs when they come over/
My cats dont drool saliva over all the furniture making slobber stains in my $1000 couches.
My cats dont stink because cats can bathe themselves.
My cats dont ruine my yard with piss stains that kill the grass- they use a designated area like alitter box
Cats are not attention hungry pains in tha asses that need attention 24 hours a day- If I ignore my cats they get it and go and do something else.
My cats dont chew up clothing like shoes.
Ive never had to be worried about someone suing me over my cat biting or attacking them.
Cats are far more independant as well. no need to walk them- they do it themselves

Plus there is a little evil behind their eyes- which is cool

Hi...long time lurker/listener who's finally decided to dip my toe into the murky ron/fez forum waters...

I've had this discussion many times. I can't understand the pro cat argument at all. Can cats do any of the following:

1) Sniff for bombs at airports
2) Serve as guide/seeing eye animals
3) assist police as K9
4) Participate in search and rescue
5) Assist epileptics by sensing seizures before they happen
6) Curl up at your feet under the covers at night and lick your toes
7) Love unconditionally

And my final tactic is to bring up the "old lady who has a lot of cats who dies alone" story. Of course you all know the cats eat the old lady; dogs would have died of starvation. Peace

When looking for a pet I dont think there are many bombs I need sniffed out in my condo or search for missing people in my place.
And yes cats do curl up on your bed but they dont lick your feet giving you itchy rashes from dog saliva.
I will admit dogs are good servants- and are loyal.
But when I had dogs they were way more work than cats and are like having a constant 2 year old around the house.
Cats can also sense when something is wrong with you- whenever I am sick they know and they stay by my side.
...and as far as "love unconditionally" how many times have you read about dogs turning on their owners? Far more than cats- at least cats can respect the hand that feeds them.

Thomas Merton
03-27-2007, 08:11 PM
I hear ya, cats are mysterious and cool. I love watching one stalking some critter, patient and deadly. I read somewhere that dogs are the ultimate social leeches; they're smart enough to realize what humans are looking for and want...to be loved, needed and like you astutely noted, they act like 2 year olds to illicit our nuturing instincts.

I'm just a sucker for that look that they can give you when you get home, its like "I've been waiting all day for you, what are we gonna do to have some fun?" Carlin did a great dog routine, about how they think you're never coming back when you leave which explains why they're so happy to see you "Oh my God, I can't believe he's back.."

By no means am I down playing dogs. I love dogs too. In fact I absolutely adore Huskies and German Shephards.
Like I said- I've had both and it just pisses me off when people say that cats are not as devoted to humans as dogs. The cats Ive had when I was a kid were just as much- if not more (in one case prolly cuz the cat was raised with the dog when they were a kitten and a puppy)
My experience is that cats are just more self sufficient and are better suited to my lifestyle.
Like the second post says- you cant compare them- they are two different types of animals that appeal to two different types of personalities of people.
Its just a matter of preference.

BTW- why is this in the politics thread?

Lock it up

Cats are the most destructive animals I've ever seen. I grew up with both. Once a cat pees on something, it forever smells like cat piss, and there's nothing you can do about it. They also claw furniture and clothing beyond recognition. Even when they go where they're supposed to, they still piss and shit in the house. Your cat might not me an attention whore, but I've seen cats that will bite you if you don't pet them when then want you to. It drives me nuts when people act like cats are cleaner/less destructive than dogs, they're still fucking animals no matter what kind of spin you try to put on it.

And oh yeah, fur balls are disgusting.

Edit: I'm not trying to argue one's better than the other.

Im so embarrassed about my typing and well where ya put comas and stuff......But I have the greatest Dog lover excepting cat story......I have 2 minn pinns(Murphy(6 )Katie(5) Not to mention cats to them was the biggest reaction word they knew( Where's the kitty kat they would freak)..My Neighbor(New) last May had a mother cat who had 4 black kittens..I love all animals so i just thought they were cute never thinking they would kinda change my pet life... As they grew at night they would come over to my house but just stay there distance But I would lay in the yard and drink my beer and watch them play..I watched them play in my oat grass and it gave me such joy....But I wanted to pet them ....It took about 4 weeks ...one night one of them came close enough to let me touch its nose...I was so excited...But after about 7 more weeks they were hanging in my garage.....Important part of story..I put flea collars on them with the numbers 1-2-3........!1 my fav and so on......After a while I had to go to the neighbor..as hard as it was... and say I cant have these cats in my garage my dogs are not relaxed at all when i let them out from smelling them....My neighbor is a real fruitcake........I thought about it all day the next day at work..When i came home 2 were gone....
And the one I really liked was one of them....Number 3 was left..I thought that fucking figures number 3 was kinda really scared....I will shorten this up..It took 3 months with my dogs taking them outside to potty untill one night they touched noses( I will never forget that moment......I own Number 3 and she is here in the house with me right now with my dogs playing by my keyboard .... She is saying to her self Jesus Jeff i could type better than that.!!!!!!!...Juggggy..Ps I Love you guys.....

Look around on the internet for "feral cat colony rescue" in your area. There are groups that trap these cats, spay/neuter, and release them, so they don't keep breeding. Also cayenne pepper in the planters will keep them away.

Doogie, with your screen name you had no choice but to reply. Nice pic, I notice the Lubriderm strategically located next to your computer. Hmmmm

I cant remember the name of my 4th grade teacher but I can remember useless random crap like urban legends at a doctoral level. I swear I remember hearing/reading/dreaming? that Aunt Bee, of the Andy Griffith Show, turned into an eccentric recluse with numerous cats and was found half eaten. I could never buy into that affected accent of hers, especially if she was supposed to be from Mayberry, NC. Same feeling I have for Kathleen Turner. No one naturally talks like that

I LOVE the coloring on your cat.

She's an angel...and really is one of the smartest cats ive ever known. I make fun of her all the time for doing dumb things, but she does things sometimes that just boggle my mind. For instance, if my alarm goes off, and I'm not up, she'll come in there and WAKE me up. Or sometimes, she'll be in there BEFORE my alarm goes off trying to wake me up, cause she instinctively knows what time i'm supposed to be up.

She also goes out of her way to MAKE you pay attention when you don't pay attention to her, which ive never seen a cat do. She'll nose around in things she's not supposed to be in just to make you angry enough on purpose to pay attention to her and stop what youre doing. She knows EXACTLY what buttons to press to make you do what she wants to do (like she'll jump on the table to make my dad angry, or nose through the trash or go where my XBox wires are just to make me angry).

I couldn't ask for a more awesome pet or friend. My dad even says we walk alike.

Even the mom cat in NY who went into a burning building to save her babies and was heavily burned didnt look as bad as that.

Haven't read the story yet, and knowing what a complete psychopath my cat is, I really laughed hard at the words "wild house cat attack".

Peace

Of course dogs will eat your carcass if you die and they go without food long enough; any animal would. Shit, even I would. Except it wouldn't take me as long to resort to it as it would take a loyal pet.
As someone else already said, bomb sniffing dogs and the such aren't pets per say, they are trained animals doing a job. Though I should look into buying one of those bomb-sniffing dogs, in case the FBI tried to put one in my car again.
Or better yet, I could get one of those drug-sniffers, that way my girlfriend can't hide her stash from me anymore.

The drug and bomb dogs mostly are pets. Their handlers take them home every day, and love them very much. Just watch on the news, anytime a police dog dies. The officer that handles the dog is usually crying on the news.

Well, of course the trainers keep them as pets and take care of them. My point was they are not JUST pets. They have to be specially trained, and most dogs kept as pets aren't trained to perform such specialized functions.

And since eveyone else is posting pictures of thier cats, here's one of mine from last Christmas.

Is Thomas Merton Your Name In Real Life?

Thomas Merton

Thomas Merton will respond in kind to Fat_Sunny by typing in the third person. No, Thomas Merton is not Thomas Merton's real name. The real Thomas Merton was a Catholic monk and philosopher who the board name Thomas Merton admires very much. He was a hellraiser who reformed and went on to write many powerful essays on religion. He taught at St. Bonaventure, which is board name Thomas Merton's alma mater. Go Bonnies!
