I like the performances of Cage's various co-EMT's (Goodman, Sizemore and Rhames), but overall I find it to be a really mediocre movie based on a really medicore book. Scorsese's direction seems really lost and scattershot and in a very awkward style that he's not able to master. It's like he was trying to outdo newer directors like David Fincher with their own MTV-influenced brand of direction. Schrader's script comes across as pretty out of touch...just compare when he and Scorsese made something as organic and gutwrenching as Taxi Driver and BOTD can't help but feel very forced and hollow. Cage's usually zombie-like performance doesn't help, even in a movie where he's supposed to seem dazed and incoherrent.

My suspicion at the time, that I haven't lost in the time since, is that Scorsese might have been trying a bit too hard to sort of react to the new wave of directors that emerged in the early-to-mid 90's, most notably Quentin Tarantino. It doesn't feel so much like a Martin Scorsese movie as it does someone trying to make a Scorsese movie.

I'm not saying that it's his best work ever, but it is a good look at NYC in te late 80's early 90's. When the city was dangerous and filled with New Yorkers. The good ole crack days.

Diaz was horrible, but it wasn't all bad. Daniel Day Lewis is amazing in it. I look it at like BOtD...not good, not bad....just kind of medicore and misguided with some great performances sneaking in.
