Pearl Jam covering Love Reign O'er Me by just the word The Who is fucking awful. I know its been out for a while now but I heard it today for the first time. It sucks ass. I love Quadraphenia, its one of my favorite albums. To remake this song is brutal. Fuck Eddie Vedder, next time I see him he's getting a kick in the cunt.
It's nowhere near as awful as the desecration of "Behind Blue Eyes" that Limp Bizkit committed.

How about a song that shouldn't have ever been made nevermind being covered ?
" Life Is A Highway " made mostly " famous " by Tom Cochrane was redone by a country group ( Rascal Flats ).
What makes that wierd is it had already been covered by another country singer ( Chris ledoux ). Although there's a chance he might've done it before that Cochrane character.
Speaking of country that Tim fucking McGraw absolutely ruined "When Stars Go Blue" by Ryan Adams.
It was already covered by the Coors & Bono, so what the fuck would compel that asshole to record a version and release it as a single?

Any dance version of an 80's song, like "Heaven," "Time After Time," or the douche chilliest of all, "Take Me Home Tonight." There is nothing quite like hearing a female vocal dance version of an Eddie Money song.

I just rediscovered on of my favorite songs of all time - Traffic's "Feelin' Alright."

Worst cover EVER? Oh, that's easy.
"For The Love Of Money" by Queensryche.
On the flipside;
Goldfinger does a cover of "99 Luftballoons" that is better than the original.
And "Killing Me Softly" by The Fugees kicks all kinds of ass. They nailed it.

JJ Cale wrote a lot a great songs but 2 in particular were re-recorded by Eric Clapton, After Midnight as well as Cocaine. If you have never heard the original versions you'd think Clapton had 2 great songs. If you have heard JJ Cale's original versions, you'd know that Clapton's style was shit compared to Cale.

Clapton and Cale put out a TERRIFIC album last year called "Road to Escondido." Cale wrote 11 of the 14 songs and technically gets top billing. If you like either of these guys I'd recommend checking it out. (This album also has the honor of containing the last recording by Billy Preston.)

In response to that, sometimes you have to separate the politics and the interviews and the ego from the music.
Bono is one of the biggest egos in show business, and I get angry when I see him preaching, but the man is a hell of a performer.

In response to that, sometimes you have to separate the politics and the interviews and the ego from the music.
I do. I already hated him because of the music. Everything else is just cake...bonus hate, as it were.

Sheryl Crow's " The First Cut Is The Deepest ".
She sucks in general so I didn't expect much.
Shawn Colvin's " Every Little Thing He Does Is Magic "

God, Van Morrison pisses me off just thinking about his soulless, aimless garbage. "Moondance" should make him worthy of war crimes prosecution, and he brings The Last Waltz to a screeching halt when he shows up.
And Astral Weeks is definitely in my top 10 of most overrated albums of all time.
I tend to agree with a lot of Mojo's assessments of overrated musical acts, but I part ways on this one. Astral Weeks rules, and I love the version of Caravan on The Last Waltz, even though Van's jumpsuit is beyond horrible.

It's actually "Tura Lura Lural" that makes me feel the pain.

See? As I said in the listening thread yesterday, I wished Mojo could have called in when they started talking about music.

He's Irish.
Actually, he's technically British. He is from Belfast, which is part of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
He also wrote and performed Gloria with Them. All covers of this song Blow.

You are a scholar and a gentleman, sir.
Fuck "Gloria." Shitty songwriter can't think of any lyrics so he spends half the song spelling her name and then singing her name as the chorus all while croaking like Froggy from the Little Rascals.
What a douche. Give me a Brit with REAL soul in his voice like Eric Burdon any day.

With an introduction from the great Otis Redding himself. Fucking awesome.
Burdon's another guy whose voice is shot after the drugs and booze, unfortunately.

What about songs that go the other way?
Compare Joan Baez - House of the Rising Sun:

Personally, I like both versions because they can be enjoyed for their differences rather than their similarities.

It makes me wonder if, maybe, folk songs, blues and ballads should be excluded.
Sometimes you'll love the "original" (i.e. - the first non-Alan Lomax recording) other times you'll hate it, or you'll find something to like about both versions.
Personally, I think the Joan Baez version of HotRS is a lot more poignant than the Animals' version, but they're still sad songs.

I love how nobody really knows who originally came up with that song or where it came from. Spoooooooky.
