I've pulled small crab traps (50 lbs) off the coast of CA, in 4-6 foot seas, I can not fucking imagine pulling 800lb pots in 10-20 foot seas. This job is unreal.

Good first episode tonight. THe young Captain looked a little lost at first.
I think Sig is good for 5-6 pack of smokes a day. I felt like getting fresh air after the show was over !!

It it so weird. It doesn't seem like it would be such a great show, but it is. I look forward to it coming back on the air all year, right after it ends.

It probably smells pretty bad already in there. It is a fishing boat. For you to really smell rotting fish, it probably has to be REALLY bad.

How much do these guys make.. I heard its can get to like 30k per man.. for how much time??

well for example last year the northwestern deckhands made

45,000 each during king crab season
17,000 each catching cod waiting for the weather to break for oepelia crab
30,000 each for oepelia crab season

total of 92,000 each for a few weeks in october for king crab, a few days for cod and a few more weeks for oepelia season

all told maybe 2 months of work time

I think the boat was called the Aleutian Ballad. It wasn't a main boat last year, but it had a guy whig out last season, so they put some cameras on the boat and then caught a rogue wave on film. If you go to youtube you can find the video, search rogue wave deadliest catch or something. She gets thrown into a cabinet and hurts her arm during the wave.

I would guess you couldn't keep it a secret if you were banging her, they must all live and sleep in close quarters. You would probably find yourself without a job at best, or possibly even 'accientally' overboard.

Holy shit that was an amazing episode. Boats got tore up. Haven't seen the Maverick yet in opie season, don't think it's out there.

Captain of Time Bandit: Lets finish this pot and then get inside so I don't kill you
Deckhand: What did he say?
Other deckhand: He said finish this pot and then come in so he doesn't KILL us. <mugs for camera>

Maverick said he was skipping Op season - they said this when he came in 5000 lbs short last season that he wouldn't have a chance to make up for his mistake until the next year.

I had never heard of this show until those guys were on R&F... now I have watched every episode they have had on... thanks buddays...

Dad's stories:

my pop worked in Maxwell House in Hoboken and one night the quality control guy
dropped the sample cup into the vat. they used to decaffeinate coffee with chemicals and this was that tank. the guy went in for the cup and died. Then another person went in after him and he died as well

my pop worked at a paper mill in ridgefield park. a person was decapitated when someone turned on the industrial fan he was working near

Grandpa's stories

in colgate a guy was cleaning the top of a tank where there was a spinning blade inside. he dropped his brush inside and reached down to retrieve it. it took his arm off at the elbow. he walked downstairs and to the foreman's office and said "i think i just lost my arm"

in colgate a pipefitter working on a steampump that pushed lye through the piping thought all the pressure had been released, he cracked the pipe and boiling hot lye shot up, hit the ceiling and came raining down on him. the best thing to happen was he died a short time later.

my grandfather accompanied many an injured worker to the hospital because he was a union leader. he said it depended on the doctor whether you would keep your limb or not. some did not want to take the time it took to repair and would elect to remove. he would speak of one doctor who would always take whatever time it took to save shredded fingers or toes and that he was meticulous with his stitching and always left the minimal scar

I worked at Colgate for 4 years and almost steamed my balls off one time. the steam caught me in the upper/inner thigh and took off a few layers of skin

another time I nearly snapped my arm in two when I jammed it against a case of soap as i was moving forward on a hilo. dumb move!

i had some iced coffee a few hours ago so I'm mr jabberjaw tonight... sorry!

As good as the money is, I don't think I could ever mentally do that job.

i have been watching the big marathon this weekend and i have to say i am completely hooked.... hehe no pun intended

it's hard to imagine working under some of these conditions, even risking your life just to make a living. but guys (and gals) do it every day and it seems to be well worth it in most cases.

new season starts this week. hopefully they will book another interview on the RnF... that would be super.

I know and the first thing I did was search the article to see if it was one of the boats in the show!

My parents were watching this show about a year ago when I stopped by their house and I was like what the hell are they watching..... a few HOURS later (it was a marathon) I understood why. I was amazed at what these guys go through while out there to catch this shit. Now I can understand why it costs so much in a GOOD restaurant.

Yeah, but how about the camera crews on the ships? They are in just as much danger but I'm sure they don't get paid a fraction of what the fishermen do.

Last season they had a 'Behind the Scenes' show and it showed that, although they're not hauling up crab pots, the camermen have it pretty tough as well. They also have to pass the same survival suit test that the fishermen do.

I'm guessing theres a Deadliest Catch book or a few out by now; if not I suggest reading Sebastian Junger's 'The Perfect Storm'. Fotget the movie, the book has some wonderfully detailed stuff about what its like for people who go out to sea. The physics of waves, what an EPIRB really does, how friggin amazing the rescue divers are, fisheries and overfishing, the science of drowning with some kickass first hand accounts, just all sorts of stories of people getting lost killed maimed blown across oceans, aside from the tale of the Andrea Gale.

Just reading drowning survivors talk about that race... one part of your brain is saying 'Do NOT Inhale!' coz it knows it's water, and death, while a deeper, more instinctive part is screaming to your muscles, 'Inhale!' and the race between the two until the deeper 'Inhale!' instinct overwhelms the higher brain and... Yow.

awesome show, there really isnt much to it but i cant stop watching.

when i lived in oregon years ago i had a buddy that went up to alaska every year and worked on a fishing boat, not sure what they caught. he told me to go up with him several times and that he could get me a job, i cant remember why i didnt go, probably just didnt want to work that hard hehe.

thinking about how i was back then, its best i didnt go, i probably would have been hanging out with luca brazi for the last 20 years if i had gone.

They Throw The Pot Overboard, Pull In The Crabs, Dump Them In The Hole.
Next Episode, They Do The Same Thing( Yawn). Am I Missing Something ?
To Make It Real Exciting, They Should Ban Smoking On The Boats, Then Fists Will Be Flying !!!

Knowledged_one
05-22-2008, 04:55 AM
Yes you are missing something, its not just about the pulling pots emptying the pots

Its about how tough it is to find the crab and get on the crab, the interactions of the crew with each other and the ongoing frustration of the captains when they arent on the crab and how it effects the crew

and not enough of the Northwestern in the last episode

Is it just me or did the Harris children completely reverse from last season. Jake was working hard and Josh was a complete slacker (unless I have their names reversed). Now it's Josh making sure his dad is ok and Jake is buying TVs and not going on deck to work. Maybe they're just editing so it seems that way, but it seems like 180 from last year.

I kinda want to see more North American coverage than we're getting right now.

How about Capt. Phil Harris getting hurt/sick in the latest episode?

I found this piece on him from the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Capt. Phil of the F/V Cornelia Marie (http://deadliestreports.wordpress.com/2008/05/05/capt-phil-of-the-fv-cornelia-marie/)

Man, the guy can make a half a million a year?

Remember what king crab legs cost in the restaurant...

I think the kids make 100K a year as deckhands. Could you image being 21 and making 100,000? I can't understand why he would even need to use his dad's credit card if he's making that much.
