Hopefully there's other soccer fans here. I've never followed MLS, but I have decided to this season. I'm more of an English Premier League fan, but as that season is winding down, I just want to continue watching soccer, even if the competition here supposedly isn't as exciting as it is over the pond.

The signing of David Beckham might get a few people interested in the game. Then again, Freddy Adu was hyped a lot, but that seemed to go no where.

I don't have a favorite team, so I'll just catch as many games as I can on ABC, FSC and HDNet.

I am looking forward to the LA Galaxy vs. Chelsea exhibition game coming in the summer.

as much as think Beckham is the most overated player today, I want to see the MLS more than ever now, just to see how it pans out. I'll be keeping an eye on the MLs this season.
Anybody up for Champions Leauge watching threads?

Go DC United!

I predict that Freddie's first season in Salt Lake will be much Adu about nothing. Thank you, thank you!

First game starts off in about 10 minutes. I'm hoping ABC will have it in HD. If not, at least the NY game will be in HD tonight.

Im excited to watch too. I too also love watching the EPL. But, I dont have a team as of yet, most like NY though, i cant wait till the new stadium. I watched half the Colorado- DC United game today on ABC. It was good. The crowd seemed into it. The new Soccer Specific stadiums are crucial for the league to succeed. Look at NY. They play at Giants stadium which seats like 75,000. So, 18,000 for a soccer game there looks awful an dead. There is no energy. Now, when there new 25,000 seat stadium opens on 2009, 18,000 will look much nicer, and most likely more people will come for the game b/c its a new facility, not in the meadowlands(gonna be in Harrison,NJ). The league is going to keep adding teams. Im hearing a 2nd NY team, which would be great. I'd hope its here on Long Island by me, but thats just my biased opinion. haha. But, a Philly team is in talks, which is great b/c it creats an rivalry for NY-Phil. And more an more stars will follow Beckham. The one thing that makes the EPL better then MLS is that the game pace is faster an the competition is better. Thats why its not as boring as people think soccer is. When the MLS get to be that way, people will be attracted to it.

I watched Colorado vs. DC and NE vs. Chicago last night and was actually pleasently surprised. Rapids, United game was kind of a slow paced game but the nightcap was full tilt the whole time. And that was with NE having three rookies on the pitch. What i'm saying is that i'll be watching again for sure.

I really thing that the clubs should have soccer"esque" logos. It'll just add to the authenticity of the league. Revs need a new logo. Galaxy as well. The best reason to root for NE: Official Supporters Club. (http://www.midnightriders.com/)

Wait till next year when our new statium is finished. Then we'll have tiny crowds in a tiny stadium. I give a large amount of the blame to whoever is scheduling these matches. Scheduling a game in Giants Stadium at 7:00 pm on a weeknight is insanity. They even have a late arriving crowd for Monday Night Football for Christ's sake.

I cant wait till all the teams have there own Stadiums. Tried watching Colorado-Houston, and it was horrible. Playing in University of Houston's football field and the fans were so spread out. The US game was awesome though. If i could add one or too channels to cable, even though there is Fox Soccer Channel already, a MLS Channel and a EPL Channel would be awesome. I prefer EPL games and i dont think we get enough. a whole channel dedicated to it would work so well. thoughts???

Have you heard of ITVN (http://www.itvn.com/)? It's a cable service via broadband connection. They offer a channel called Setanta which broadcasts EPL matches. Setanta actually gets first picks on which EPL games to carry each week and FSC gets to choose the remaining games. So having those 2 stations would be great.
I'm a Sirius subscriber and they broadcast EPL matches and have an exclusive contract with Chelsea, so if FSC isn't carrying any games I'm interested in, I'll listen to the radio broadcast.

I have Sirius too. But i tried doing soccer on the radio, its hard b/c i dont know all the players so, ill never know who has the ball. Now, could i still have Cablevision and get this ITVN thing? id really only want that one channel. or maybe petition cablevision to get the channel??

Dan G
06-09-2007, 07:55 PM
I'm almost positive you could still have cable and an ITVN account. From the description, ITVN would be run as if you were on an Internet network connection. The FAQ on their site doesn't say, but I'm sure you could call one of their dealers in your area to find out. I've considered ordering it, but I have no available inputs on my receiver or TV, so it would be a hassle to unplug things when I want to use it.
Setanta is also available on DirecTV, but with ITVN you get all the PPV matches as long you pay annually. My home doesn't face the southern sky, so satellite TV is not available to me.

David Beckham's first game will be televised tonight on ESPN at 8:30 est.
The game is only an exhibition match as the LA Galaxy play Chelsea of the Barclays Premier League.
Beckham will not start due to an injured ankle, but he will probably be a late sub.
His first official MLS game with the Galaxy won't be until August 5th, so he should be 100% by then.
I'm watching tonight, but not for Beckham. Chelsea is my favorite team in the BPL, so I'm enjoying watching their pre-season games thus far.

Everton of the BPL play Real Salt Lake in an exhibition, also at 8:30 on GolTV. Everton is a pretty decent club and features US Men's goalie, Tim Howard.

On Sunday, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, the Mexican national team star, makes his debut with the Chicago Fire in an exhibition match against Celtic FC.
That game will be on FOX Soccer Channel.

Plus the $250 million number is a bit of a misnomer. The Galaxy are not paying Beckham $50 million per season to play soccer. That number includes all of the ancillary payments he's getting: sponsorship deals, merchandising (which is an estimate), etc. I don't remember the exact number, but I'm pretty sure his actual salary to play for the team is in the neighborhood of 8 million per year.

Looks like it is going to pay off for the team with the huge amount of coverage and attendance increase. I wonder if it will drop off right away or if it will be more gradual or not happen at all.

Beckham's arrival has given a boost to MLS. I'm pretty sure all future Galaxy home and away games will be sold out.

MLS keeps improving each year, especially now that most of the teams are playing in soccer exclusive stadiums. The league is expanding with new teams and not accepting any that won't already have a stadium plan.

They'll most likely never reach NFL or MLB numbers as far as attendance or TV ratings, but I don't think the league will fold like the NASL did in the early 80's.

With soccer only TV stations popping up on cable and satellite, I think MLS has a bright future, and I hope Beckham can convert Americans into becoming fans of the worlds most popular sport.

Freddy Adu has left Real Salt Lake to join Benfica of the BWIN LIGA aka the Portuguese Liga.

All the stories I see say they're still talking, but for Adu's sake I hope it happens. Benfica is one of the top clubs in Portugal and it gives him the opportunity to play in high profile games in front of large crowds. Plus, they play a creative, more free flowing style, which will be great experience for future World Cups.

Right, the clubs have agreed on a transfer fee, but he still needs to agree to personal terms on a new contract for him. Your first post just seemed to suggest the deal was definitely done. Either way, Adu's crazy if he doesn't go.

The deal is now official. Freddy is now a member of Benfica, pending a physical.

David Beckham's potential debut for the Los Angeles Galaxy in a Major League Soccer game has been picked up by ESPN2.

The network will televise Sunday's match at Toronto FC at 7:30 p.m. ET. Beckham has been sidelined by a left ankle injury, and his status for Sunday's game has yet to be determined.

The broadcast will be blacked out in Los Angeles. Because it added this game, ESPN2 no longer will televise the Aug. 16 New England-Colorado match.

The Beckham watch continues as ESPN2 will be covering the DC United vs. LA Galaxy match tonight at 7 est.
Beckham probably won't play due to his nagging ankle injury, but that shouldn't stop you from watching a potentially decent game. DC has great fans and that atmosphere should be fun to see tonight.

Look for Beckham to get his first start next weekend when LA visits NY.

Did anyone catch last weeks NYRB vs. LA Galaxy match? Damn, that was a great game...if you like offense.
Looks like all those air miles have caught up with Beckham. Game in NY on Saturday, fly to England for game on Wednesday, fly back to LA for game on Thursday and he played all 90+ minutes in each game.
LA plays Colorado tomorrow, but Beckham won't be making the trip. I don't blame him. He's doing way too much. Don't forget, he had already played a full season in Spain before joining the Galaxy.

To be fair to Beckham, that's a great point. It's easy to criticize the guy for not scoring a goal every night...as the retarded American sports media does with Beckham. But this factor is never brought up.

Thanks for pointing that out budday.

DC U V. Chivas was an amazing game. Both teams were playing great, I think if more MLS games were like that it would grow faster in the US. Except for the whole scoring on your own goal part...

I couldn't even get into watching the NFL today. After watching soccer nonstop since May, I found the NFL to be so slow with all its pauses between plays, timeouts, commercial breaks, etc...

I was happy when 4 o'clock finally came around so I could watch the USA vs. Brazil game. That was an exciting game. USA, even though on the losing end, still looked great and should easily advance to the World Cup when qualifying begins next month.

The season is over and now the playoffs are set. The LA Galaxy had a nice run to end the season, but couldn't get a win in their final game which would've put them in the playoffs.

Thanks for the info. DC United had a phenomenal year. I'd rather watch them play superior soccer and stumble a little at the end than a Fire team that sucked and that got it going in the end. That aggregate goal setup blows. Just play 2 out of 3! They play 8 months out of the year, whats another game? The matchups are compelling, but it's obvious to me it will be the Revs vs. Dynamo on the 18th, and i shall be there in person to witness it.

I hate the playoff set up in MLS.

DC United were the best team all season, therefore they should be champions and not just winners of the Supporters Shield.

I don't need a championship game to determine the champion. Each team plays each other both home and away up to 4 times in a season, so every team is familiar with each other.

Frank Yallop resigned as manager of the LA Galaxy and will manage the expansion San Jose Earthquakes next season.

Bruce Arena resigned as manager of the NY Red Bulls. He probably won't get the open Galaxy position cause he and Galaxy GM Alexi Lalas supposedly don't get along.

England National Team manager Steve McLaren was spotted in LA attending a David Beckham charity game. McLaren has been lousy as England manager and may get sacked later this month and then be named the new Galaxy manager.

Whoa! When did this all come out?! Could Arena be heading back to DC? He still lives in the area. Does this mean Harksey will be taking over the Red Bulls' reins when they move into the new digs? Thanks for the update. Must tune into sky sports. Any word on how freddy adu is making out with benfica? I see they are currently 2nd and playing tomorrow vs. celtic i believe....

Who would want that England job? They hound you to death over there. They treat the team manager with the same level of media madness as we do with Britney Spears. Its a thankless job where every fan thinks they know more than whoever is running the team.

Mclaren to LA? Come on, and bring some more EPL vets with you.

I believe Beckham announced sometime last week that Yallop was going to be gone, but it was officially announced over the weekend and then Monday came the announcement that he was going to San Jose.
I have a feeling that Landon Donovan will also be going to San Jose since LA needs salary room since he's technically a designated player.

With Arena gone from NY, my first instinct was that John Harkes will take over, but it's possible that former German National team manager Jurgen Klinsmann could land the job. He has a home in California though and is good friends with Alexi Lalas, so he may be in the running for the LA job as well.

Russia and Israel play each other in Euro 2008 qualifiers in a couple weeks. If Russia wins, that means England will be eliminated from the tournament and most certainly McLaren will be out of a job, so that's why I feel he'll probably be appointed LA manager. However if Israel wins, I think LA will go after Klinsmann.
If McLaren gets sacked there's a lot of speculation that Jose Mourinho will be the next England manager. I don't think that'll happen though cause he has already stated that he would like to manage his home country, Portugal. That job will most likely be available to him within the next year.

Freddy Adu has mostly been playing off the bench for Benfica. He's still only 18, so I think it's good that he's not being rushed, especially since he's playing in a tougher league now. He has 4 goals on the season, 2 in league play and 2 in the Champions League.

No MLS Cup for me

Every week I go through my on screen guide and set up my DVR to record soccer matches. I do this as a reminder for myself so I know which days and times to watch matches.

Today I go to set up the MLS Cup for the 18th and discover that the ABC affiliate here in Louisville, KY (WHAS) will be airing a hunting/fishing show at noon, followed by a college basketball news show, which then leads into a UL pregame show and then a UL college basketball game.
There was no sign of the MLS Cup being replayed at a later time.

I am highly disappointed. I've devoted myself to a full season of MLS action and now the championship game is being taken away.

I seriously doubt that a large percentage of Louisville/So. Indiana soccer fans exist, so calling/e-mailing WHAS will probably do me no good.

Any other suggestions? Feel free to help bombard WHAS with your own complaints on my part.

Ruud Gullit, once one of the best soccer players in the world, has been hired to coach the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The 45-year-old Dutchman will succeed Frank Yallop, who quit as coach of the David Beckham-led Galaxy on Monday to return to San Jose for a second stint with the Earthquakes.

Gullit, born in Amsterdam, was a star striker on the standout Dutch team that won the 1988 European Championship. Along with Dutch teammates Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard, he joined Italian club AC Milan and the trio helped it win back to back European Cup (now called Champions League) titles in 1989-90.

Gullit was the World Soccer Magazine's World Player of the Year in 1987 and 1989. He has spent the past two years as a TV soccer analyst.

I love soccer but I agree w/ Pele in the article when he bashed Beckham. He said at the end that the MLS needs to stop the whole designated player rule and let teams play players the same as NFL and MLB. I agree. Now, sure, you dont wanna upset ballance like the EPL w/ Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool always on top, but if sports has shown one thing, its that parody exist. Id love to see NY get a Ronaldo or a Figo to compliment Angel. Although I want another team in NY. I cant cheer a team called NY that plays in NJ. Its hard enough to be a Jets fan, even with the losing. LI is a great site for another team. We can support it. Put them in Citibank park where the LI Ducks play for a few seasons before a SS stadium is built. KC is doing that next yr.
