I'm listening to Tuesdays XM show and their talking about town names that are pronounced differently. The first thing that I noticed was that Ron was a little off with what locals call Norfolk. He said it's Norfuck. Actually, it's Nah fuck.
Anyway... what are some of your favorite (or least favorites)?
Leicester: Fancy people say Lee chester, and rednecks say Lester. To be honest, I think the rednecks have it right. It's kind of like Worcester, Mass. It's not War chester. It's Worster.
Pall Mall (the cigs and various streets): Ever since reading Kurt Vonnegut novels as a teen, I've pronounced it Pell Mell.
Hurricaine (in West Virginia): They call it Herican, (like Mexican). It's not there accent that causes it, either. If you pronounce it like the storm, they correct you.

I learned that when I was going to JMU. It was enthralling to know a wild man like Woodrow Wilson was born so close.

Oh, and I should mention something that's like fingernails on a chalkboard to me: people who say "NEW Haven".
It's pronounced "New HAVEN" -- just like "New YORK", "New HAMPSHIRE", "New MEXICO", "New ROCHELLE", and so on.

leicester in england is pronounced lester, so for the origin of the name, that pronunciation is correct. as i posted in the listening thread that day, mosholu parkway is pronounced by many locals (myself included) as muh-SHOE-la parkway.
