I've never seen this before and had to share it. I'm in line tonight at the gas station and i'm thinking I need a lighter and some soda so I grab the soda and wait for the 2 people in front of me to complete their transactions. The guy in front of me just asks to buy a Bic lighter, which he already has in his hand. The cashier asks for ID. dude half turns to me and says, "you need an ID to buy a lighter now?" I say, "That's fuckin bullshit, you don't need to show an ID to buy a lighter. What is this, Russia?" and the 2 people got a laugh out of that. Must have been my delivery.
So I go up to the counter and I tell the cashier, you know, I was going to buy a lighter too but if you are going to card me forget it. He says, "it's ok i won't card you". And I had to hold my tongue because I almost yelled, Then why the fuck did you waste everyone's time carding the other guy?
So what's the deal with Bic Lighter's? Are they afraid that someone will light all the gas on fire before they get a chance to ask for a name and address? Or was this a case of wierd racism? THe cashier is middle eastern, the Bic Lighter guy was black and I'm white. You want to card the black man but when the white man protests you are perfectly ok with that? THis is the same cashier that accused me of trying to steal gas about 3 years ago (of course I was not!)

I was once carded at the check-out lane at K-Mart for buying an Exacto knife. I looked at the lady like she was insane. I was rarely carded even when I should have been. I always looked much older than my age so I was always the designated beer buyer in high school. Now this lady's going to card me when I'm in my late 30s. I just wanted to get out of there, so I didn't make an issue of it. Showed my license and went on my way.

I remember being in a dollar store a few years back and seeing a sign saying "You must be 18 to purchase a lighter" on the display stand. So I guess it may be some kind of store policy, but not a legal thing.
They should card fat fucks at the store when buying cupcakes to make sure there 18 and responsible enough to get fat.

I think that's probably the case. With the way people are quick to file lawsuits, it's probably betting to not have to deal with parents of kids who might use the lighter to do something wrong.
This reminded me of another carding situaltion I had. Years ago, there was a sign on the 7-11 that said "We ID everyone under 27". I forgot my ID, but I figured I'd be OK. After all, I was 27. So... they refused to sell me the beer. They said they ID under 27. I said, "But I'm 27!" Sheesh.

I've been carded buying a lighter before and there have been times where they wouldn't sell to me without my id. I don't know if its a law or if its store policy but its bullshit whatever it is. I also worked at a grocery store that would card everyone for beer regardless of age. they actually wouldn't sell a six pack to a 80 year old guy because he didn't have a id.

Wal-Mart refused to sell me American Psycho last summer because I didn't have id. I was at a different Wal-Mart last semester and I was carded for buying NoDoz. Same Wal-Mart, carded for lighter fluid.

Maybe he just thought the guy in front of you was sexy and wanted to make sure he wouldn't go to jail if he tried to have sex with him. I'm sorry but maybe he didn't think you were cute enough to card.

Just a few of many reasons not to shop at Wal-Mart.
I've been carded for buying lighters before. However, it doesn't seem so much to be store policy as it seems to be the preference of individual convenience store clerks, as I almost always buy lighters from the same store and get carded sometimes but not carded others. It's really only one middle-aged woman who card for lighters, probably some mother who doesn't want her kids having lighters, so she imposes her own views on everyone else; either that or she realizes how shitty her life is considering she's middle aged and works at a shitty convenience store, and thus feels the need to excercise what little power she has. It's really fucking ridiculous considering I'm 26 and look like I'm 46 (the real reason you should avoid drugs, kids). Unless I'm buying cigarettes or liquor at the same time, just sell me the lighter you fat cunt.
