I have to disagree. I am not a racist, and I do not use racial slurs out of anger. When angry, I simply let fly incoherent bursts of vocal fury.
Example, from earlier today when a black guy cut me off on the highway on my drive to work: "Yo mafucka! Can't you see my fuckin' shit here! You cuntfaced little shitleg! I'ma take that SUV and rub my unwiped ass all over it, you shit for a face dickless little turd! AAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHAAAAAACCCCCKKKKKKKK!"

Saying things like this instead of racial slurs not only keeps every racial minority within earshot from wanting to kick my ass, but it tends to scare people off. Sticking your head out the window and shouting while driving 80 mph and throwing a 1/2 empty bottle of tea at other vehicles helps, too.

I think intent has a lot to do with it. I grew up in SC, where the population was 55-60% black. A common name I was called was "white boy,' which seems completely benign, but when it is intentionally said in a racist and condescending way, to provoke, it becomes bad. They would do it purposely in a way to intimidate, like, "white boy, huh, white boy." It was the intent that made me hate all those assholes. They had comfort in numbers, so they would just be all racist as hell, daring you to retaliate. Most didn't, but I did. I still have a chipped tooth for my trouble, but that was the ONE time I lost, and that was the time I was jumped. Of course there was always the requisite "cracker" and "honkey."

Now I live in San Antonio, where we have 70-75% hispanics. Come to think of it, I haven't been a majority since I was like 5 years old!
