anyone watching planet earth on the discovery channel? its fucking amazing- the info isnt that new but all the high speed and high res photography makes it worth watching- theyve got ultra slow mo of great white sharks jumping fully out of the water while murdering the shit out of some sea lions.

i saw a few of these in HD when i was at my mom's house a few weeks back. it was amazing, great camera work. my favorite scene was a school of dolphins moving in on a school of fish.

There's a bunch of videos from it up on Discovery's website. My favorite is the Blue Bird of Paradise's mating dance. Its some of the funniest video ever.
Some of the most beautiful photography I've ever seen. When I eventually get a PS3 the first thing I'm doing is buying the BBC version (same except narrated by Richard Attenborough instead of Sigourney Weaver) on Blu-Ray. I'm willing to wait to see it in glorious HD.

Wow - I didn't realize there was an Attenborough version. I've watched three of them now and I'm hooked. I have to admit they sat on my DVR for a couple of weeks because I didn't think they would be all that engrossing. I was very wrong. After I see them all I can't wait to use them as background atmosphere for when I'm on the net or when people are over. The -qatsi trilogy is the same way. Great stuff.
Yeah this aired a while ago on the BBC. It was either originally a BBC production that Discovery licensed or a joint production. Either way if you are going to buy it on DVD you should get the BBC version. They sell it in a box set while Discovery makes you buy each disc individually like they usually do with their stuff so you'll save money.
Here is an Amazon link. (I didn't even notice it's not coming out until the 24th) (http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Earth-Complete-David-Attenborough/dp/B000MR9D5E/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-1503393-2712941?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1176357773&sr=8-1)
Oh yeah, there's also a series running on Discovery Science called Plant Earth: The Future. It's a very different series, none of the HD stuff or beautiful photography, at least on the level of the original. In fact all I've seen so far is basically GLOBAL WARMING GLOBAL WARMING GLOBAL WARMING. That DVD set includes this series as well.

best filmwork ive ever seen on a documentary...specially the aerial shots. from start to finish this was possibly the pinnacle of natural history at the bbc. my advice smoke a bowl and put it on the big screen.

We watched it at the store while our feed was broken, there's really nothing like seeing in on 50 different screens at once.

Best.
Documentary.
Ever.
This has to be the greatest thing ive ever seen on television!!!! i wish there were more than 11 episodes. if anyone hasnt seen this yet, you have to check it out. you will regret it if you miss out. there are amazing never before seen shots of active wildlife, creatures that havent been captured on film, chase scenes that are absolutely breath taking. I havent been so exited in a television series in god knows how long. sigourney weaver is the narrator of these series and she does a fantastic job.

When they run it later at night, I could watch all of the series in one sitting.

the bits with the polar bears made me cry. the bits with the birds of paradise made me smile. the bit with the caribu being born on the run and just popping up and starts running along with the herd was amazing. i alos like the dophin working as a team to coral the schol of fish and the sea birds dropping in for the feast is truly unique. fucking 11 out od 10 for planet earth. i thought this was a thread a while back? they mentioned smoking for it as well.:smoke:

not to be a wet blanket, but i wasn't too impressed with Planet Earth. the footage was certainly amazing, but the narrative was all over the place. it seemed like they had all of this great footage, but they couldn't figure out how to make a story out of it.
also, i'd definitely prefer Richard Attenborough's narration. Sigourney Weaver's reading was pretty dull.
speaking of Attenborough, his In the Life of Birds documentary is one of the best i've ever seen. i'd highly recommend it!

I was watching the deep sea one that Sigourney Weaver narrates the other week and it was just completely fucked up. I think the deep sea ones scare me the most, the creatures there are what nightmares are made or and all they do is feast on rotting sperm whales.
It's like one of the circles of Dante's Inferno.

i think that the deep sea is the scariest place on earth, for me. its just skeletal fish and glowy jelly-fish.

Truly an amazing show visually, but the information discussed isn't on the level of some other less visually stimulating series on the same topics. Still, coming in on a 1080i signal, or better yet from a 1080p blue ray setup it's wicked.

Yes, Planet Earth vs a baby avatars and dresses are right on the same level. Good comparison and way to pay attention.
