I've never understood the popularity of tattoos. Political statement? Artistic expression? Anti-establishment symbol? Hubris? I have yet to come up with anything I can live with forever and explain to my grandchildren. I know tats have been around since the beginning of civilization as tribal identifications. In fact, there was a cadaver found in the Alps thawed after 5.000 frozen years and was found to have the following: a pouch containing a piece of charcoal from the last fire to start the next, marijuana, and was tattooed with three wavy lines.

But its 2007. What's up with tattoos? Why did you get yours?

My wife recently got her first tattoo. She's 31. recently she went through possibly the most horrific experience of her life (possibly also the most horrific experience of mine as well). She got the tattoo as a symbol of strength, something physical and lasting, to represent her overcoming wht happened. I guess that's as simply as I can put it.

Fat Sunny, damn you make Thomas Merton laugh. But for this brief moment in time, lets groove on the fact that a newbie who has already felt the wrath of Mojo has identified common ground, no tats. We also share midwestern roots as my sainted mom grew up in Round Lake, Ill near the Wisconsin border

i had three really bad tats that i got when i was young, stupid and in to a bad scene (crime and violence). after years of being ashamed of them i did some soul searching and had them covered up and made into two large tattoos that i am very proud of: one an American Indian head dress with a skull, and a bull.

Tattoos are silly pictures drawn on your skin.
They're dumb cartoon images of nonsense on a paper that stays with you forever.
They're a sily joke.
I like jokes.
I have 16 of them from tattoo artists.
I have 10 jailhouse-style homemade ones I've poorly done myself.
I think people who take tattoos so seriously are ridiculous.
Cool kid says, "This represents my ______"
I say, "Whatever, Cool kid. It represents a dumb picture on your skin."
I like them, but dont try to make them out to be more than what they are.

Tatoos are what you make them, if you think of them as a silly joke then that's what they are, if you grant them a meaning and/or associate a belief or experience with them then that's what they are, just like any other symbol you give legitimacy to.
Now if your refering to people who show off there tattoos like they would a new pair of sneakers to look cool then I see what you're saying...

Well, since you have a tattoo for your entire life unless painfully removed as Stugots outlined, it seemed the appropriate forum.

The "target" tattoo bothers me. How can you not interpret that as a sure sign of ho-ness?

Please note that having a tattoo on your lower back indicating your status as a ho does not imply you have nappy hair. Thank you.

He's just pointing out that the "That's Life" forum is where people are able to post threads that they want people to be serious in (life advice, deaths, illnesses, etc.), and this doesn't seem to be that kind of thread.

if you grant them a meaning and/or associate a belief or experience with them then that's what they are

Then you're granting meaning and/or assocoiating a belief or experience with a silly picture on your skin. Which is fine, but call it is what it is.
Mind you, I love tattoos. That's why I made the point to tell how many I have. I just think too many people put to much weight in their "Ink".
Get over it. It's a picture.

Yeah, I get it, but don't tell me that you don't grant some symbol in your life meaning and if someone walked up to it and called it silly, you wouldn't feel pissed. My wife's tattoo is not a silly picture, and yeah I'm being defensive about it. I'm not saying you're wrong to think of tattos like you do but not everyone holds them is such meaninglessness.

I'm not trying to ruffle your feathers, boss. Just expressing my opinion on something I'm somewhat well versed in. I never said they were meaningless, just that I don't get putting all the weight into the meanings. You can think I'm a jerk for it, but I think giving so much power to a symbol is kinda silly. That goes beyond tattoos. That's a flag, crucifix, or whatever. It's just an image, I just don't get applying the bigger meaning to it.

No, I won't explain it, and no I won't say that it's "deeply meaningful," because it isn't to any of you (although Fat_Sunny and Gvac will both understand it's meaning to me, vis a vis our mutual reading habits). I posted the picture because that's the topic and I think artistically, given my style of life, it's beautiful in it's simplicity. If I may pontificate for a second, I think that many get tattoos that they think are meaningful, but they don't understand exactly what they are supposed to mean.

I got one tattoo when I was like 18 or 19 on my right upper arm. It's the NJDM logo, the letters put around a black X. I never regretted getting it for one second because of what the music I made with my friends meant to me and the fun and happiness my band brought to me.

Even if the whole thing blew up in my face tomorrow and I never touched a drum stick again in my life, it's there as a reminder of all the good times I had travelling around the country to possibly play for like 20 people a show.

Would I have those memories even if I didn't have the tattoo? Sure. But I got it.

I have a series of very small tattoos all over my body which can only be viewed with a high powered microscope. Oh, they look like little brown spots, people think they're just beauty marks. But they are actually detailed plans on how to build an alien spaceship. I had them done when I was abducted, and I'm building the spaceship in my basement. Working on the little brown mark halfway up my right forearm as we speak.

But don't tell anyone. People will think I'm crazy.

After my granfather died in '99, my brother & I got matching 2" ribbons on our left forearms with his initials in them, exactly like he got in boot camp. Our grandad was very close & very important to us. He was a US Marine, Pearl Harbor survivor, and retired Newark Police Officer with 35 years of service.

He was always a hero to us and in our ignorance we chose to honor him with copies of the tattoo he always told us he wished he'd never gotten. But both my brother & I had the bug for a tattoo anyway & figured this was one that definitely fell into the category of "something you won't get tired of looking at in a couple of years."

Since then, I got one more (which remains unfinished since my health problems have me on blood thinners) and my brother has two more.

I guess it's all a matter of what it means to the individual.
To go to a tattoo shop on a whim and pull a standard design off the wall because it seems like the thing to do, then yeah there's no meaning to it and pretty much pointless. As well as those are thetattoo's that people regret.
If your art is something that symolizes who you are at the very core then to ever regret it means that you've in a sense lost sight of who you are, and at that point maybe it's good that it's there to remind you.

All my work on both sleaves are all one peice that was designed and planned for years and have very personal meaning to me.
As well as one other peice that I have that to most may look silly seeing as it's a cartoon of Wylie Coyote in a chefs uniform holding the Roadrunner dead by the neck and lowering him into a stock pot..... but even that one I waited YEARS to get while I waited to earn the title "Chef" with years of chopping onions, working 80 hours a week for free just for the experience and so on. To me that tattoo not only symbolizes a chef but mans ultimate struggle and striving relentlessly to an ultimate goal without ever loosing sight. As well as representing the ultimatemeal.
So cartoon tattoo or not you can never take away what I went through to EARN that tattoo, therefore there could never be regrets, that would mean regretting who I am and what I've acomplished.
