I had a bit of a scare tonight. To keep it simple, I'll say that the mother of one of my daughter's classmates brought my daughter home much, much later than expected, and didn't have a cellphone to let us know why she was so late. I now know what I put my parents through when I was a kid when I'd get home really late and find my mother at the door crying because she was so worried. It sucks -- your mind runs through a ton of awful scenarios as you worry about what might have happened. I knew this day would come sooner or later, but I kind of thought I had a few more years. I'm just so glad she's okay. BTW, I'm getting my daughter one of those kids' cellphones tomorrow that only have speed dial buttons.

The cellphone is an EXCELLENT idea Mike. But didnt the mother have a quarter for a PAY phone? I dont have kids, and this is one of the many reasons why; the worrying about them when theyre with other people. Did the mom at least apologize to ya?

She did apologize. She even called us from home to apologize again. At that point, it was water under the bridge because we had my daughter safe and sound. I think there were some errors in judgment, but it's just something I don't even want to deal with right now. I'm just so glad everything is okay.

I used to be a freewheelin and carefree...no seatbelt, no helmets...
No worries. Now I have a 2 year old son and I'm lookin at stuff like this (https://sfl.sprintpcs.com/finder-sprint-family/signIn.htm?PCode=vanity:familylocator)
It is absolutely the scariest feeling in the world. All kinds of horrors go through your mind.
My sons like to play hide and seek in the stores. I'll be looking at someting and when I turn around they are gone. I'll look for a while and eventually find them hiding in the racks of clothes.
The first time it happened, I looked for a minute, and then I left my wife to search and I ran directly to the door to make sure they weren't being dragged out.
I'm glad that everything worked out well Mikeyboy.

My sympathies Mikey, I know EXACTLY how you feel. You run the worst scenarios through your mind and feel helpless to do anything about it. I'm glad everything is alright.

Who doesn't have a cell phone in this day and age? Who took your daughter out, Wilma Flintstone?
And I can only imagine the hell I put my mom through when I was a kid.

From the title of the thread, I just thought you took a huge dump.
Hehe, just kidding. Glad she's OK.
Make sure you put 866-313 FREE as one of her speed dials!

That's what I was thinking. Even I have a fucking Tracfone pay as you go thing, it's just cheap enough and worth the small price I pay for minutes every couple months.
But Mikeyboy didn't go into a lot of detail about that. Maybe he cell battery died, it was lost or just simply left at home. Under normal circumstances that lady wouldn't have been late, she would have went home and that's that. Just a shitty night.

::Raises hand::
I'm glad she's OK Mikey. If you haven't done so already, you might want to tell her the fears you had not knowing where she was. It seems as thought these days kids are never "too young" to hear such things for their own safety.
Jesus Christ AJ, you do realize it's 2007 don't you?
Do people look at you like you have 3 heads when they ask for your cell number and you say "I don't have one"?
It's my way of sticking it to The Man.
Besides, I hate talking on the phone.

I don't have one either. Stay strong my brother.
So as not to further derail the seriousness of Mikey's thread, please feel free to challenge my anti-cell phone stance here (http://www.ronfez.net/forums/showthread.php?t=59048).

I don't have kids so I can't say that I understand. Although I remember being younger and having my mom all upset when I came home later than I said. I couldn't understand why it was such a big deal. The past couple of years I've realized that she was freaking out for a reason and feel bad about thinking she was crazy or something.
I get really worried about everything as it is, I have no idea how I'm going to be able to have kids... I'll probably just die from stress.

Glad she's OK and if your mom is like my mom and you put your mom through what I did, then your mom is laughing on the inside at your anxiety just a little bit and of course knowing your daughter is safe.
SO, curious minds want to know: What did this modern Luddite parent say was the reason for the tardiness?

i know exactly what you mean. sometimes my daughters would stay after school for additional studies and my now ex would forget to tell me. as soon as they didn't get off the bus it was 'worry time'... I always think the same thoughts about how we put our parents through hell when we came in late
now that they have had cellphones for a while you wonder how you ever made it without them
