I saw that today. And after it took Verizon 3 fucking weeks to clear up my connection, I think it might be time to revamp the internet too.

Or maybe they're just fucking assholes, and their SAVAGE outsourced customer service reps are about as useful as a dingleberry inbetween your cheeks.

in theory it is a great idea, but it is almost like saying "the U.S. 2 party system is not working like we intended to, so lets scrap it and start over" not an exact comparison, but almost on the same level.

I had a class in college where we touched on this subject. Yes the internet is different from what it was invisioned to be. There is even something out there now called Internet2, which is a college only high speed internet between only a certain number of school and research points.

Internet as we know it is also going through a major change, moving from IPv4 to IPv6 which will allow many more computers and devices to access the internet.

I think they should deal with the problem using existing infrastructure, and maybe take a software based approach to all this.

Stuff like this is talked about all the time, I know people having been working on Internet2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet2) for like 10 years now and I think its currently being used for research purposes, like the Internet originally was used for.

The problem, as the article says, is that everyone will want to have a say in the "new" internet.

The government and police agencies will want to track everything all of us write or view to "protect the children", of course. China will want to be better able to block anything about political rights. France will want to permanately block anything not in French. Porn will be blocked because "it's degrading to women". Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson will want any posts they deem offensive flagged and investigated.

Unfortunately, all these people will probably get everything they want built into the new system. As to security, as long as humans come up with software, there will be other humans who will figure out how to breach it (sometimes I wonder if it's not the same people working both sides against the middle). If universities want to build a parallel network, let them.

China is doing that right now. They want to censor whats online. I remember google being targeted by the Chinese gov't it was in the news a few months ago
