Ron was just saying how the only way to buy meat is at a butcher.

I never really bothered doing this as the higher price is not worth some non distinguishable higher quality food. I find my local Shop Rite has a very nice butcher section and I have never really had any complaints with what I get there.

YES!! i purchase all my meat at Maloney's in Jersey CIty on Newark Avenue. I love getting them from the butcher because they give you the cuts you WANT rather than the cuts you can only pic from in those styromfoam thats wrapped up in plastic like at shoprite. Dont get me wrong, i'll buy from shoprite if i see a nice cut, but i prefer the butcher. its much fresher and the meats are better quality.

i wanted to find one that is local to me, but the butchers at Whole Foods are really good, although expensive as well.

i get steaks from costo, huge T-Bones are only like 11 bucks each, and they are better than any steak i have ever gotten at a supermarket

When I was living in NY I always bought from Ottomanelli's. I dealt with them for years when I was a chef and continued the relationship when I left the business.
Now that I'm up in Rhode Island I just buy from Stop & Shop unless looking for something special then I go to Whole Foods

i buy it from a butcher. the only time i buy meat from a supermarket is if i'm out & about, & i decide to make something on the spur of the moment. i usually cook dinner between 8 - 11pm, so it's harder to get something right then and there from the butcher. i'll defrost something from the butcher if i'm thinking about it early enough. i buy most of my fruits & vegetables from fruit stands instead of the grocery store as well.

I go to this butcher type small market. They have great cuts of meat and if they are trying to push something out they'll give you a deal. They spanish guys that work there are high alot of times and ring you up for way less than they should. One time I got 40 dollars worth of skirt steak for 10 bucks.

mother always got her meat from our local neighborhood handyman bobo. she would go into his butcher shop, which was a customized van and demand some meat. mother would yell about how the meat that bobo was giving her wasn't large enough and be constantly yelling for more. one time, mother said that bobo gave her a sample of his meat and she couldn't even swallow the whole thing...wait a minute. bobo wasn't a butcher, mother was just a cocksucker

The A&P in my town has its own personal butcher within the supermarket so I go there. Same meat as Whole foods. A little cheaper, plus discount.

I get everything from a Butcher on Court Street in Brooklyn that still keep sawdust on the floor. It's been there forever and they have the best stuff. I am going to really miss living here.

When I was a kid my mom always bought meat from our local Itilian Butcher. But now all the butchers have died off or closed. Now we get some stuff from A&P butcher and some from the italian deli who has some meats. I wish there were more Butchers, it seems like they are becoming a thing of the past.

The Country Store near me used to have a terrific butcher shop, but it's not what it used to be. I do get fresh venison every fall, from a buddy at work.

we have a small butcher shop near us, but more often i'll go to stew leonard's. bigger places like that have their own butcher shop (you can even request the cuts you want) and the product moves faster. i've recently noticed a decline in their quality of meat. for easter i bought a nice lamb leg roast at whole foods. it was a good price (not that all of their meats are!) and everything there is cut to order.

and funkman, what's the difference betwixt burgers and chopmeat? not trying to be a dick, just honestly confused.

I didn't know A&P still existed. The last one I saw was about 20 years ago.

I get most of my meat from Trader Joes. The real only exception to that is during Duck season when I hunt.

I'd like to find a really good butcher around here, i think I'll start looking. Thanks rf.net!

I like to support the small food places, so I tend to go to butchers more than the supermarket. In the city, I like, ottamanellis and sons, and florence meat market. Florence is awesome. They have sawdust on the floor, and butcher stuff, basically right in front of you. For sausage, I always go to Faicco's pork store on bleeker. Stuff from the butcher usually isn't much more expensive and sometimes it's cheaper.

Modern supermarkets usually have pretty good butchers, especially fairway and whole foods. Fairway and whole foods even dry-age their own beef. It costs about $25 a lb though. The thing is, with most other supermarkets, you usually aren't getting prime meats. You usually get choice or select. That isn't necessarily bad though. Prime porterhouse, for me, is a little fatty. Prime sirloin though, is just right. And if you are buying a chunk of chuck meat for stew or something, does it really matter if it's prime? probably not.

Something quick for dinner? Shop-Rite or A&P.

A bbq when I want some good food?

The butcher. In fact, I dropped 66 bucks there this past Saturday on a couple of sirloins. They were the size of manhole covers and worth every penny.

Even the hot dogs are a thousand times better from the butcher. 100% beef and no preservatives.

You can even get 'em skinless.

My old man owns a butcher shop so I'm way too biased on this question.

That being said, it's not even fucking close. The meat is of much higher quality, you actually can get a cut you want and a good butcher can give you great advice on how to prepare the meat if you ask.

If you buy your meat at a mass merchandiser you aren't living.

Petrina,

There used to be a Polish Butcher on Jersey Ave I believe on Jersey Ave a block past Newark Ave, maybe named Europa. Just curious if you know if it's still there?

There was also a Polish restaurant maybe named Petrina's on Manila Dr down near the Grove St station. Sorry to be a pain but is that still there too?

you can get all that stuff at a supermarket with a butcher counter.

Yes it can. But generally that meat comes from a frozen box. The quality on that is much lower than that of a shop where the animal was taken in whole.

There is nothing grosser than a grocery store meat department. The frozen/thawed out/re-frozen/re-thawed process is quite disgusting.

I buy from a place called Sussex Meat Packing (insert joke here). The prices are better than the market and can't beat the quality. If you live in Wayne area its not that far about 25 mintues up rt 80. Well worth the trip.

The marinated rounds and chickens are great for BBQ.

I buy from the butcher, the quality of the meats are much better. Mostly just steaks, and hamburgers though. I will get them though at the market as well though if they look good. Sometimes in Costco or King Kullen, Fairway, or Restaurant Depot etc the cuts are very good and I'll get them there.

We buy ours from the little market down the street. They have their own butcher in the place. But if I want something nice ill head to Whole Foods or the local butcher.
It took awhile when I moved here to find the place with the best meats.

if you want to argue quality, that's one thing (even that i would dispute, at better stores) and there are some supermarket's i would almost never buy meat at. and why would/do supermarkets not take in meat whole? also, wouldn't their stuff tend to be fresher as a lot more of it moves and it's not left to sit? again, talking better meat departments, not all.
