The show was fantastic, the interviews really got to me. That opening with the violin in the episode about them freeing a camp was chilling as well.

I have watched this series over and over whenever its on the History Channel.
What a great piece of drama ... and a necessary reminder of how the wars of yesterday were fought ... and won.
The interviews are the best part. I remember when it first premiered... and they had the actors taking pictures and talking with the actual guys they played. What a special series to be a part of.
I still have yet to purchase the DVD set. But I definitely intend to.

I tuned in today during dinner. It was the one where they discovered the concentration camps. So depressing...
My uncle was in one of the first units to find the camps. He has photos of mountains of bodies. He never shows them to anyone, and never talks about it, but my dad saw the pics once.

Truely a sad series but a necessary one. That generation is diminishing little by little and soon will be extinct. Many young people never realize that those men (and women) did God's work and allowed many us us to be here today. Its tough to hold in emotions when its so realistic.
mildly amusing

I remember watching it every week when it aired on HBO...i cried during the last episode when Winters tells the story of his grandson...it made me admire my grandfather (purple heart, silver star) and his generation even more

yes you could have but you did the right thing. this series is truly a masterpiece, in my opinion. Plus, its commerical free when you have the set along with the nifty tin can that the movies come in, (assuming you got that set).
i got him the set the day it came out...dished out 100 bucks for it...and i'd pay it all over again.
my father watches it everytime it comes on TV....just as bad as Lonesome Dove, except I'll sit and watch this with him and not be bored.

Just for those of you who don't know the true story of Albert Blithe (the soldier who couldn't see and then was shot in the neck)
He actually did not die of his wounds in the late 40s...he went to another unit after he recovered from his wounds and served very well (3 bronze stars, a couple purple hearts, and a silver star). He stayed in the army and became a Master Sergeant (he died in Germany of a heart attack or something sudden of the sort in the mid 60s).
You can read the whole story here (http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/albert-blithe.htm)
I plan on visiting his grave the next time I go to Arlington

Best series EVER.
I am a WWII history nut . . . anything to do with it, I've found something to hold my interest, whether it's fascination with the technology (tanks, guided missiles, submarines, aircraft carriers, planes. . .) that developed out of need or the strategists (Mongomery, Rommel, Eisenhower, Bradley, Patton) who served their respective sides or the sheer brutality (Auschwitz, Dachau, Terezienstadt) that took place. . . I watch this EVERY TIME it's on TV and plan on buying the DVD's. (Just ask Matt.)
I also enjoy the interviews that allow us a glimpse at the real guys from Easy Company; just seeing their faces as they tell their stories makes it more real for me. (Neither of my grandfathers served in WWII, so I don't have anyone in my family who could have told their story to me. My dad's dad had had polio as a kid and my mom's dad was too young to enlist.)
Among the books on my "to-read" list are Band of Brothers and Beynd Band of Brothers . . . maybe I'll buy them when I break down and buy the DVD's.
Thanks Mudo for the additional info about Blithe. . .the episode with the laundry made me so sad the first time I saw it and I almost cried. . .then Matt walked in and I felt weird for getting all caught up in it.

I purchased the DVDs a few years ago, and I've watched the series a number of times since then. It is a very powerful production. The bonus disc includes an hour and a half documentary that consists of interviews organized chronologically. Your eyes will not be dry if you watch it.
I've read that HBO is currently involved in a new series called The Pacific (link) (http://www.the-pacific-war.com/). I am anxiously awaiting it's release now that Rome is over.

You could've, Reesh but I'm not sure if they edited it or not on the ol History Channel. I watched it on HBO when it first hit the airwaves. I missed a couple and bought the DVD set a year or so ago. I won't lie to you...I cried like ESD with hot sauce in his ass crack. It's pretty powerful stuff. They are truly America's greatest generation.

The History Channel did edit it.
Doogie got me into this series and I have to thank him for it. I absolutely LOVE it and I can watch it over and over. The actors were excellent. I bought it for my Grampy for his birthday this year and I can't wait to sit down and watch it with him. I love watching old movies with him 'cause he always tells me his stories too (c:

I saw an interview with Ambrose and he said while he was researching/teaching he kept hearing about this group from the 101st Airborne that parachuted behind enemy lines on D-Day, then to Carentan and Market Garden [see 'A Bridege Too Far'] and then on to Bastonge and the concentration camp and finally capturing Hitler's Eagles Nest.
The DVD Box Set is easily worth it for the extras, hours of making of, and more importantly, as stated above, the interviews with the real men of Easy, and the fact that Dick Winters walks this earth after the life he experienced... Yow.

No shit! I assume most of his scenes in Band of Brothers were not "hollywood'd up" and it makes it all the more impressive. If you saw his real life scenes in any other film you'd think it was bullshit and hack. Blows my mind everytime I watch that documentary.

That show makes me hate life. Where do these kids get off writing songs about how girls are like fish and they need to catch one? And why were they in a bathtub all together? WHAT THE FUCK!?

Band of Brothers is such a great piece of art. The way it depicts everything is so great. It really brings to life all the horrors of war, but at the same time it makes you kinda wish you were there with them fighting right by their side.

Check out the book too! Obviously the mini-series couldn't hit everything and its very well done. I thought that was the coolest thing too Mike, how the unit was there and a large part of nearly every major battle on that front. Then they are one of the first people to make it to hitler's nest. Crazy crazy stuff.

Ambrose has a ton of really great war books. I just read "The Victors" by Ambrose. Its a great book in the style of Band of Brothers but focuses on various groups of the war...from the top down to the Canadian troops.

I was part of the 101ST Airborne Division when the series came out and was invited to the premiere. Even though Spielberg or Hanks never showed up I got to meet "wild" bill and Maj. Winters. There was not a dry eye on the Theater when they showed the first two episodes and the conclusion of the series. I am proud to be a veteran of a unit with such great history.

There is a special Hell that exists for people patiently waiting to jump out of perfectly good airplanes into enemy territory, that is if the plane you are waiting patiently in doesnt get shot down and/or catch fire, in which case your death gets a bit more horrific.
I was lucky enough to fly in one of the 14 remaining B-17s in the world two months ago. While these were not the planes that flew the paratroopers, they were shot out of the sky frequently; and while flying in this tiny, tiny plane [sure looked big from the outside] and the fucker is utterly deafening coz of the engines, and you're looking up and watching wires that are the control cables; no hydraulics, and as you cruise at a couple thousand feet you realize people jumped out of planes, and maybe worse, just sat there as they heard the anti-aircraft guns shooting up at them, hearing flak hitting the wing, sometimes like a bunch of rocks, sometimes blowing a hole right where the pilot was a second ago. You see at that altitude if your aircraft loses the ability to fly it will be only a few seconds before you hit the ground.
Un-f-ing-real what they went through, and that's just the approach and jump on D-Day; sheeeesh.

During my life on the military I've been very lucky. Not only did I get to go to the premiere of the series, but I was able to attend the celebration of the 60th anniversary of D-Day. We went to Normandy for a few days and got to jump on the same drop zone that all of them jumped on D-Day. Lucky indeed.

I think you're right. I've seen plenty of blood. Though, it's not really as graphic as some other war movies because of the subdued colors.
Dan 'Hampton
12-28-2008, 05:06 AM
Maybe a bit less blood, barely any tit and they seemed to pack more commercials in this time. I made it through the concentration camp without getting misty. But at the end it hit me again. I'm so glad that i've started to get more of my grandfathers story in the South Pacific from him, there aren't many of these guys left.
