without even looking at this, is it just possible they're on vacation like the rest of the free-fm shows? just an odd coincidence.

They're still in a book. It's hard enough with O&A and R&F on vacation.
It's very rare that two shows would be on vacation during a book... and most PDs avoid it like the plague. three shows? Forget it.

In defense of JV and Elvis, I hope the asian-american community slams them hard, and then JV trots out his wife. That would be awesome.

What disgusts me most about this is that the calls weren't even funny.
Prank calling a Chinese restaurant? I'm pretty sure that was the second phone call Thomas Edison made.

I agree. it sounds like a hoaky, hacky radio bit. I thought I heard that the studios were being redone and that's why everyone was scheduled for 2 week vacations.

That's one of the things that annoyed me most in the whole Imus thing, that Stern completely missed the larger point of what's going on here, what the stakes are, and instead exhalted in it and gloated like he'd won something.
Kind of funny behavior for a "first amendment warrior". But, then again, everyone but the dwindling fanatic fanbase that followed him to Sirius figured out he's full of shit a long time ago.

Uh-oh!!!!!
My problem with them getting suspended or worse if it is real I have no confidence in them being capable at defending themselves with any kind of sense and it makes O and A look much worse when they inevitably get lumped together with them in articles.

To be "another Imus", you need to have a successful 35 year career.
This is not a free speech issue.
This is more of a corporate/political correctness issue.
If anything Doghouse was stupid for REPLAYING racially-motivated humor in the wake of the Imus problem.
If they are fired, then you have an issue. Otherwise, take the suspension like a badge of honor and be lucky that's all that happened.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but I thought prank calls are against the rules. I thought Opie talked about how you have to record the call off air, then get permission to use the audio from the person you talked to. Which means 1 of 3 things:
1: The 'Chinese restaurant' is someone they know faking it.
2: The 'Chinese restaurant' gave permission.
3: They did not get permission, and thus should not have played it.
Regardless, if prank calls are "one of the most controversial parts in their program" who would listen?

Even if it's a "fake bit" - a fake setup call, it may be the racially-motivated content of the bit that got them in trouble.
Again, in the wake of the Imus mess, it wasn't a smart move to play it.

I really don't know JV & Elvis' show. I've only heard it a couple of times in 15-20 minute intervals. I'm not ready to jump into the show because my radio listening card is a little jammed as is, but...
1. An edgy comedy show should have the right to be edgy without having to second guess everything they do and say. That doesn't matter if it's Imus, O&A, R&F or the Doghouse. I haven't listened to the Doghouse calls that got them in trouble, but I'll bet they are no worse than the kinds of things we've heard on radio for years. It's all about who gets targeted, and who is to say that R&F won't get targeted next. They are extremely adept at working both clean and dirty, but who is to say whether R&F might say something on FreeFM that none of us might find offensive, but some vocal group deems that it is. How quickly will an on-edge PD be to shut the door on R&F's show, especially if Imus and the Doghouse have received the axe. This issue bugs me, and it has nothing to do with whether a show is good or not. I never liked Imus' show, but I am greatly bothered by what happened to him.
2. Like it or not, the Doghouse is an important block in the FreeFM programming lineup. Allowing them to be pushed out weakens the WFNY FreeFM programming overall and hurts the chances of the FreeFM format to succeed in NYC.
So, I do support the Doghouse in all of this, although, like furtherman, I question the effectiveness of the current protest plan.

I def agree Mikey, I think the way things are going right now is very dangerous for the entire radio industry. It seems like talk is not the only area getting the pressure, as we have seen a lot of people come out against rap music as well.
I just think JV and Elvis are doing this is an indirect promotional stunt. I think they knew what was going to happen, and wanted to get their names in the papers in order to get their ratings up. This is just my opinion, but when I do listen to their show, it is not something I would put last them. I just find the timing suspect. I think they are worried about a really bad book since they will not have an O&A lead-in 2 out of 3 weeks. I thought this might be their way to stay in NYC a little longer by being able to say "well we were suspended during the ratings book, so those numbers are off"

Funny how the talent gets in trouble and not anybody in corporate. It happens time and time again.
Say what you will about these guys but they were all over the Imus thing and were reaching out to other shows to show support for Imus. They also knew, as Opie has said, they were next.
That was fast. Gone in what, 2 weeks after Imus? Wow.
The few that are stating that they are damaged by these words heard on the air are not accepting appologies. They want the firings. Not suspension, firings.

Why don't we just drag 'em out into the street and beat them with lead pipes while we're at it? We're slowly reversing the progress made with societal tolerances from the 60's on to the 90's. My one bud whines about how the 90's was this evil decadent age in American history, but that's because he wasn't getting laid in the 90's and he got to listen to his dad complain about Clinton for 8 years. He, and I'm sure many Americans, are fully intent on getting culture to be just as lame and hokey pokey as it was in the 50's.
This ignorant shit pisses me off. Don't listen if you don't like- why do people feel the need to seek out and lynch something they personally don't like when they could just as easily leave it alone and forget about it?
And Mojopin hates Imus, so he thinks it's alright he got fired (correct me if I'm wrong). Other people hate JV and Elvis, so they think it's alright they get fired too. Many people here wouldn't shed a tear if Stern got canned- me included- but it still would be the continuation of a trend that is very bad for this community's interests. As Mr.Cumia put it, this sets a PRECEDENT... just as Sulla marching on Rome set the precedent for Caesar to cross the Rubicon. Just wait till the hammer falls on the buddays. And you know it's going to happen one way or the other.

Exactly how this shit works. Friend of mine who was in Columbine was angry at Howard Stern for saying the kids killed in the shootings 'deserved it' and was part of a group of kids from there trying to get Stern off the airwaves in Littleton. She wasn't listening at all to the show, she heard his comments from someone else, some attention-seeker.
Their movement obviously failed, but it makes you wonder why 'nappy headed ho's' gets Imus fired, and the shit that Stern says (which is 100 times more offensive in my opinion) never touches him? The severity of the "crime" and the severity of the punishment are all out of whack in this goddamned country.
And yeah, I hate Stern, but I never think he should be removed from the airwaves for saying something a small group (however sympathetic one may be towards them) finds offensive.
TheMojoPin
04-24-2007, 01:37 PM
And Mojopin hates Imus, so he thinks it's alright he got fired (correct me if I'm wrong).
No, simply think it's hysterical that he got fired because I hate him and I love that he got tossed out onto his dusty, boring ass. I think him actually being fired over what he said this time is overkill, but I do think he's said plenty of other things in that past that mertied discipline from his employers or anger from the public.
My main issue is just how people keep referring to Imus or this new mess as being "free speech" issues along the lines of what the 1st Ammendment actually means. They're not. If this was a genuine free speech issue, I'd be furious, my hatred of Imus aside. Since it's not, I have little pity for morons. It's really not all that difficult to not be a racist (of ANY degree) douche in public, contrary to what some may think.
Basically, these guys' job is talking for a living. If they talk "poorly" and there's enough of a public reaction that it's detrimental to their employers, I understand why those employers may discipline them. If you're a banker and you keep fucking up at "banking" and pissing off customers or potential customers, your bosses are going to do something about it. In short, these guys are getting their jobs yanked around because they fucked up doing their job...it just happens their jobs are talking into a microphone and on a much bigger scale than ours that garners them much more attention when they fuck up, so people take it to mean that they're somehow important or it's serious when they get fired.

It's not a very good anaology, though. These shows are doing just fine for their "customers". It's a vocal minority that likely aren't customers/listeners who make decisions as to what the customers/listeners should be receiving. When you were managing the book store, and there were a tiny group of people calling for your firing because they didn't like the content you were stocking (to the detriment of the majority of your customer base), that would be analogous and another bullshit situation. The problem is that management is listening to this vocal minority right now.

I agree with Koof. I may not like JV & Elvis, but we keep forgetting, IT'S OUT SHOW NEXT if we let these fucking racists, facists and opportunists take away unpopular speech.
Don't let a somewhat vocal minority run the dialogue.
I totally agree with Koof and DMM. We must protect our rights to free speech and to listen to what we want on these air waves or sooner or later it's going to become Communist air waves. It's bullshit. It's not just about JV and Elvis, it's about all our boys, the ones we love, RF and OA. Sooner or later if this bullshit keeps up, it'll be them next. So this mean if Ronnie makes fun of Fez for being gay are they going to be fired next? We live in a fucked up country. Go to http://peopleagainstcensorship.com/ register and sign in to support your freedom of speech and be against stupid radio censorship.

Mikey just summarized one of my fundamental problems with the Imus firing.
I will say this, though. I'm not very worked up about this case, nowhere near what I was about Imus. I liked Imus, and I cant stand JV and Elvis. But I dont think thats hypocritical whatsoever on my part. I had no problem with Imus being suspended, it was the firing that made me upset. Firing and suspension are two very different penalties.
BTW- Does this explain the MID BOOK vacations of BOTH Ron and Fez AND O&A? Taking time off and letting things cool down before they come back? I suspect it is.

You're absolutely right. I may be looking too far ahead. I've seen different reports. Has the suspension been announced as two weekw or indefinite? Also, given the climate following the Imus situation, it's very clear that a suspension could be the pre-cursor to a firing, just as it was with Imus. Don't forget also that O&A were suspended before Infinity decided to pull the plug on their show. A mere suspension is completely different from a firing (and a much more reasonable response by the company), but I fear that we're looking at more given the last couple of weeks.

I should have made this point in my last post but didn't want to re-edit the quote box -- I'm nearly positive that R&F's vacation was scheduled prior to the Imus backlash. I believe it was scheduled for both shows initially to allow XM to redo their studio (which I guess isn't happening now).

if it's true, my guess is JV & Elvis tried to get fired...
i.e. o & a in boston...
they dont want to be doing 9-12... prob. have an offer in chicago, or california to do a 6-10 show and need to get fired.... just my guess

Yeah, I thought the same thing. You're not making any big, unfounded leap of logic considering whats happened recently. Remember it was announced that Imus was suspended before he was fired. There are some differences here, though. That got HUGE national attention, Imus didn't serve his suspension immediately (which would have took some of the steam away from the outrage) and the people opposed to Imus were very well organized and took it to the top of CBS to get him fired. Also, the line was blurred on whether Imus was doing comedy or politics due to his many political guests. So I dont see any similarities there.
Imus was really a perfect storm of events. I dont know how that translates to other shows, but we'll soon find out.

Fair enough. Re-reading it, I can see how my analogy is off. Bottom line, I still look at it as actions between employers and employees. I understand why people are frustrated, but the employers of these shows can ultimately decide what they're going to tolerate from their employees or the public reactions that these employees generate. I've been annoyed in the past when management has cracked down on shows I like, but ultimately it's what I said...actions between employers and employees. I understand how it can be really hypocritical since most of these guys are hired because they're "edgy," but no matter how edgy they are they still answer to their bosses, and it's ultimately it's those bosses call as to what they'll tolerate it. I'm not saying people can't disagree with that and get pissed and want these companies to know they're pissed...I just totally disagree with how there's this constant sense of over-importance in terms of "battling for free speech."

What disgusts me most about this is that the calls weren't even funny.
Prank calling a Chinese restaurant? I'm pretty sure that was the second phone call Thomas Edison made.

The real issue is that we're all gonna lose the entertainment that helps get us through the day. It doesn't matter if you hate Imus or consider JV & Elvis hacks. If they can be fired for making a joke that may have offended some racial activists (not the majority of the race in question), then edgy radio, and comedy in general, are truly doomed. When did we get so fucking sensitive?!?! It's disgusting! And don't forget... If JV & Elvis follow Imus to the unemployment line, can O&A or R&F be far behind? How long before they slip up? Even if they don't do themselves in, how long will it be, given the current climate, that commercial radio decides that it's too risky to have edgy talk shows on the air anymore? There won't be room for everyone on one satellite platform... And remember one thing... It's not all about money. Imus was 25% of WFAN's ad revenue, and they cast him out as soon as there was a hint of pressure from a very small group. Even though all the online polls overwhelmingly said that Imus should not have been fired. We are treading on dangerous ground in this country. Soon we'll be listening to our comedy CDs and "offensive" music under the covers so the censorship police don't get us... "Farenheit 451" and "1984" HERE WE COME!!!!

Ok, i am kind of late on this, but CCTV and Peopleagainstcensorship.com is reporting that JV & Elvis were fired for the bit. We keep falling back and losing ground, seriously, soon we will be living in a country that burns books and albums that it feels does not conform or is "offensive." It would turn into that town from "Footloose" before we know it.

***** Earlier today this article stated that JV&Elvis had been fired by CBS radio. That information was believed to have come from a reliable source, however it has since then proved to be false. I sincerly appologize to both Jv&Elvis and their fans for the confusion. It is a mistake that shall not be repeated. - S.M. Reid

According to the NRMB, JV & Elvis have officially been suspended "indefinitely". There will be substitute hosts in their time slot starting Monday.
My opinion of CBS management can not possibly be any lower.
