My wife and I went out to eat tonight at a semi-fancy restaurant. (bill was 70 bucks for the 2 of us). We were both dressed in a t-shirt and jeans.
I notice the waitress sort of being pretend friendly toward us, while taking a lot of shit from a guy at the table next to us. The notebook thingy with the check from the couple before us was still on the table, i just pushed it to the side.
When the check came, there was a stamp on it that read in big red ink (Gratuity not included). I thought that was strange, so I peeked at the check from the couple before us, guess what, no fucking stamp.
I circled the words on the stamp and wrote " WE KNOW ! " and left a generous tip just to lay a guilt trip on the bitch. Hopefully next time we go back she apologizes.

Yeah but the food was real good, and I want to go back. I figure if we get her again, she'll feel guilty, and maybe give us some extra special attention.

I had no idea that Old Country Buffet was doing racial profiling too now...

if i get bad service from a place or a bitch as a waitress, i won't go back to the place. there are too many other good restaurants to go to.

No win situation i guess, at least this way i can hope it bothers her that she was a judgmental bitch. If I gave her a shit tip, it was what she expected and she probably wouldn't think twice about it.

You say it was semi fancy, and yet you wore t-shirts and jeans? That does sound shady.
But ok, the stamp thing sounds weird. But to continue past conversations on the subject, and I know youve been around for awhile so forgive me for not knowing this, but what is your racial makeup? I ask this to see if it had anything to do with the stamp.

I say semi fancy, because the price for two meals was 70 bucks, so somewhere between Bennigans and Chez Ralph. The crowd was generally retirees wearing khakis and polo shirts, but whatever, it's not like I was dressed like a dirtbag.
My wife and I are both white, 28 yrs old.

I would have asked her to explain what "gratuity" meant.

Speaking from experience, I'm kind of surprised that there would be an actual stamp on the receipt that tip isn't included. Usually, "graituity not included" is pre-printed on the initial check OR there's a tip box/line on the credit-card sign off.

I think you handled it in the best way possible. You left a nice tip, so you can go back, and you let them know that you aint gonna take stupid shit like that, without being rude.

My opinion would be that going to a restaurant is part food and part experience/ambience. If I had the experience like that it would make me not want to go back. You handled it properly BUT I would not be going back there. There are plenty of restaurants out there. Even if you stiffed them you should feel free to return. They are the ones who have to please you not you to please them.

I would not go back there. I'd ask for the manager and show him both checks and ask why the fuck mine had that stamp.
Jeff and I go out to eat a lot on a whim, and are not always dressed up, but we regularly will drop serious cash on a good meal. I'd want to let that place know that they lost my fucking business.

an eatery that even owns a stamp of this kind should not be thought of as upscale. that's more trashy than not leaving a tip!
I would have called the server over and asked her point blank why the check was stamped.
biatch.

You mean the check from the previous customer sat on your table the entire time you were there? Did they even bus the table before you sat down?

This place doesnt sound to semi fancy.
1)They left the previous check on the table before seating you
2)you were seated even though you both had t-shirts on
3)they had a stamp about tipping
4) senior citizens in kahkis sounds like they wanted 15% of their meal, no place nice gives off for any reason.
Next thing your going to tell us is they had a 2 for 1 coupon special, but you forgot the coupon!!!
$70 isnt that much for dinner. I could go to my local pizza place and order apps and a dinners and a couple of sodas for 2 people and it would be around that. The other day my cousin and I ordered food to go from a pizza place. We ordered 1 clams orgenato, 1 mozz sticks, 1 chicken marsala, 1 shrimp marsala and 1 garlic bread. No sodas, No delivery and the bill was $70
Maybe they always stamp the check and forgot to do it on the previous check. Dont take it personal.

E&E Stakeout Grill. Eating out in Florida isn't that expensive. The lamb chops were all stacked up in a nifty tee-pee. Had this waffle chip thing sticking out of the potatoes, couple of parsnips, and some sauce drizzled on the edges of the plate.

i can see why you're upset and probably would be myself in that scenario. what people are missing is that there MUST be a reason for them having that stamp. they wouldn't get one of those for the fun of it. they must have had problems in the past. like someone else said, since you are white, maybe they thought you were foreigners and they wanted to remind that we tip here.
also, i'm really thrown by the timeline of your story. it sounded like the first guest's check was still on your table AFTER you saw your own check? please clarify.
