View Full Version : Asians protesting 105.1 for racist comedy skit.

Looks like it's about a week old but I haven't heard much on this one yet:
"power 105.1's "are you smarter than an asian?"
The hits don't stop... more racist radio news. Last week, around 9:00 am on Wednesday, the Ed Lover Show with Egypt and Ashy on Power 105.1 in New York aired a segment called "Are You Smarter Than An Asian?" Yeah. That title alone makes me scream that's racist! But it gets a lot worse. In the segment, an "Asian" guy named Mr. Hung Lo spoke broken English with a stereotypical Chinese accent, with "Kung Fu Fighting" music playing in the background. A listener then called in and competed with Mr. Lo to answer jacked up questions like "How does an Asian pronounce 'fried rice'?" That's racist! I first heard about this in this press release from the Organization of Chinese Americans:"
Looks like they have called for an all out assault against the radio station:
Angry Asian Man website. (http://www.angryasianman.com/2007/04/power-1051s-are-you-smarter-than-asian.html)

Now that I think about it...
What about that "Pizon" (Guido) Italian version of the 12 days of Christmas done on WKTU 103.5 in NYC.
It's a 10 year old song they play around Christmas time...and it is as racial as they come.

Let's bookmark this thread to remind us about this for the Christmas season. We can organize a huge stink about it and protest that song.

As a white person, can I protest Ani DiFranco?
Oh yeah, that's right; I'm too busy going to work to protest something stupid I hear on the radio.
white people are so scared of black people. they bulldoze out to the
country, and put up houses on little loop-d-loop streets. and while america
gets its heart cut right out of its chest, the berlin wall still runs down
main street separating east side from west. and nothing is stirring, not even
a mouse, in the boarded up stores and the broken down houses, so they hang
colorful banners off all the street lamps just to prove they got no manners,
no mercy, and no sense. and i wonder then what it will take for my city to
rise. first we admit our mistakes and then we open our eyes. the ghost of old
buildings are haunting parking lots in the city of good neighbors that history
forgot. i remember the first time i saw someone lying on the cold street, i
thought, "i can't just walk past you, this can't just be true." but
i learned by example to just keep moving my feet. it's amazing the things that
we all learn to do. so we're led by denial like lambs to the slaughter,
serving empires of style and carbonated sugar water and the old farmroad's a
four-lane that leads to the mall and my dreams are all guillotines waiting to
fall, and i wonder then what it will take for my country to rise. first we
admit our mistakes and then we open our eyes. 'til nation's last taker
succumbs to one last dumb decision and america the beautiful is just one big
subdivision.

having fun or JOKING about racial issues isnt racist. Not all asians sound alike but some off the boat do. Not all Italians act like asshole tough guys, but some do and the guido xmas makes fun. Not all blacks are nappy headed ho's but some are. Why does everything have to be Racist and just cant be taken as jokes?
Comedians are in a lot of trouble, they will never be able to make fun of any group of people. I guess they will have to make fun of presidents, celebs and themselves and all groups of people are going to be off limits. Its sad that everyone has to be a victim and no one can take a joke when its about their "PEOPLE"

i think we should wait till someone plays the song. i know someone at WPLJ or Z100 will play it. Once they do, i will be calling in to complain. I wonder if my call will be put on the air. what will i say? "Do you really think that the song you just played is complimentry to Italians Americans? In a Post-Imus world should such insults be hurled in our faces?"
or, I will just call Rev. Al to be outraged for me.

If you make a name for yerself doing that in China, you disappear. Here, we are entitled to express our opinions, even thru protest, so why NOT do it. It's really a form of therapy and also a method of "thwarted agression," like a kinda therapy, excorcizing what may be considsered evil or at the very least, insulting. It's better than rioting & murder, isn't it? I hate bigots & all forms of bigotry & I hate every motherfuckin Asian & Jew joke that is made on this board (or any other minority for that matter, but in my immediate family there are Asians & Jews, so that hurts me the worst), or anywhere else for that matter. I regard that shit as the HIGHEST form of ignorance. I'll speak out if it's worth the effort, if the insult is so incredibly vulgar & stupid that I start to feel hatred toward the offending party, but they are ALL insulting & low forms of expression, IMO. When someone is hurt it can bring out the best or the worst in them, better to talk or protest to difuse anger than the more "uncontrollable" options such as violence, which is another last resort of the ignorant, desperate people w/out the power to use words constructively... Freedom of expression is only a freedom if it's used as such, if it's forgotten & not excercised, I'm sure the government will find some way to relieve us of it. Bu$h has been chipping away at it for years now... China has been censoring it's people a lot longer, but we are catching up... speak now or forever hold yer peace!!!

Bobo, usually i agree with you. But with this... sheesh.
Are you encouraging people to speak up towards censorship? I should use my voice to silence the voices of others? What happens when someone wants me to be silent? Will I be censored too? We need to promote tolerance, and acceptance. Not just for other people but also for the things they say or do which we may find distasteful or offensive.

all joking aside: once you start to censor you cant stop. it has to be across the board or not at all. hence, my comments about the guido christmas. Do i find that song funny? no. do i resemble anything in that song? no way. I'm advocating the rights of the people to protest, not censorship!!! Take Don Imus, I feel that the real villians in that story are the sponsors & the radio station who caved in immediately because of controversy. People may not like what he said, which I don't really get cuz he was simply using a colloquialism (& I'm "sensitive" as a motherfucker..), & are entitled to speak out, but there was no need to fire the guy. That was pure cowardice on the part of Imus' associates. If they had kept him on, it would have maintained a better system of social "checks & balances," regarding any further discussion of what happened. I don't ever advocate "killing the messenger." I have had people approach me about that song, and I have explained my point to them & left it at that. If I really wanted to be hurtful, it would NOT be that subtle, I think that attribute applies to just about everybody!!!

I agree, my biggest problem wasn't that people protested Imus, it was the complete lack of discussion on the topic and the idea that once people make mistakes they cannot be redeemed. People should be encourage to express themselves in constructive ways and we should encourage people to grow and learn from their mistakes, not cast them aside once they ask for forgiveness.

The song doesn't parody the papcy, if you consider what it says. It simply makes the ironic & ridiculous proposition that I would be a sexier new pope than the ones they were considering electing 2 plus years ago, when i wrote it. It is really a parody of me as being sexy & powerful, which I am not. Nowhere in it do I attack Catholicism or the Papacy. I got some heat for it & I addressed it in a civil manner, perhaps not to the satisfaction of all, but you can't please everybody all the time. I know that & I don't expect to be pleased all the time either...

I think intent goes a long way towards how a comment (or a song) is perceived. Most times maliciousness comes off differently than comedic or intellectual playfulness. Listen to Lenny Bruce, or Richard Pryor, or George Carlin talk about race, then listen to David Dukes. Any one of them can be provocative, even uncomfortable at times, but hate is far more deliberate than irony or satire, & hate lacks intellect, it's dogma, a subjective "truth." Sometimes the line is far less clear, & sometimes the reaction of the listener (or reader) is the controlling factor. There is also a difference between response & reaction, response tends to be composed, reaction tends to be spontaneous & uncontrolled. Taking all this into account makes for a somewhat unpredictable situation. But I really believe that the core is intent, which isn't all that illusive a quality in folks.

Exactly. It's a joke. The only thing funnier is the actual papacy itself! Bobo, write a song about how unbaptized babies can get into heaven now. For a thousand years, they rotted in purgatory.. but this new pope just said... Naaah, they're OK. They're probably in heaven.

I agree somewhat, but it rapidly degraded into trotting out people like Gwen Ifil who got called a cleaning lady fucking 10 years ago. Who the fuck holds a grudge for a decade over an off comment and then revels in his firing? Like that's a good thing to promote, being petty and then gloating in self satisfication.
Then, also where do you go from there? Are you saying that because he has a track record it is a permanant trait in Imus and so he should completely disregarded? I just think that is where it gets scary.

Wow, very similar???
Those so called "jokes" rob people of all their dignity & humanity, reducing them to a series of particular physical attributes & hackneyed cliches (EG; narrow eyes, big noses, mispronounciation of words, parsimony). It's a dehumanizing machine of perpetual bigotry, forever establishing & indoctrinating new bigots & bigotries. Emphasizing differences & teaching ridicule, not commonalities, common decency & respect. I would argue that humor at the expense of another person for reasons beyond their control isn't even humor. It's a kind of anti-social conditioning akin to mob rule.

It's a kind of anti-social conditioning akin to mob rule.
again, i can see that. bigotry also covers religion.
and does this mean ron is bigoted against red-heads and/or the irish (for his treatment of dave)? i don't think so, myself, but what if people started calling in being offended by it? do you also consider that to be not even humor?

Provocational, Huh? Does That Mean In Favor Of Getting A Job In A Trade Or Craft?
Fat Thinks You Meant Provocative Or Perhaps Confrontational, Or Maybe You Intentionally Merged Those Two Words.
Now Fat's The One Being Provocational!

what does his past have to do with it? His firing was stupid and not needed. same goes for any entertainer.
Because the post I replied to was seemingly implying that these kind of "mistakes" can be something that people can learn from. That really rings hollow when we're talking about someone who has been around as long as Imus and has race baited a lot worse and pretty damn often over his career.

This is nothing new. How many politicians have their races sidetracked by something they did or said years or decades in the past? Gossip rags dig up stuff about celebs that happened a long ass time ago and revel in it. Let's not act like this is something new.
