I know next to nothing about art. But, here's my story:
Several years ago, I worked for a company that bought out a smaller company. While we were in the process of consolidatng the operations, we closed down the smaller company's office and pretty much threw out most of their shit into a dumpster. That's where I rescued the painting in question from. I recognized it as what looked like a Peter Max, complete with signature, and asked my GM about it. He said it had to be a fake, but I could have it if I wanted it. So, it's been sitting in my parent's basement for the last five years.
A couple of years ago a similar painting was featured on the cover of TV Guide and my mom's been carrying on ever since about how she thinks the painting may be valuable. From what I've been able to learn about Peter Max, he did a lot of these flag-type paintings, so it's not beyond the realm of possibility that it might be authentic.
Does anybody know where I can go to have someone give me an honest and reliable opinion as to it's worth, or lack thereof? Also, I don't want to have to pay for this appraisal, as I'm leaning towards it being a fake.
It looks something like this:
