View Full Version : Actors and Great Movies

Following up on today's show discussion, how many actors really have more than 4 great movies? Offer your own and what you like.

I have one: Clint Eastwood with Outlaw Josey Wales, Unforgiven, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, and Fistful of Dollars. Arguments could be made for other Eastwood movies as well.

I have to disagree with Ronnie B. as it pertains to Tom Hanks' performance in "A League of Their Own." Hanks was comedy gold in that movie and I would say he played more than a 'bit part' as Mr. B described it.

And to just glance over Forrest Gump & write off Philadelphia...the first time I heavily disagree with the big man.

Therefore, I submit Tom Hanks with:

Big
The Money Pit (just kidding, but I did love this movie)
Saving Private Ryan
A League of Their Own
Philadelphia
Apollo 13
The Green Mile
Road to Perdition

Star Trek III is not even a good, much less great, Star Trek movie.

When I had no support it helped me find my katra.

That guy needs to go get himself a nice piece of ass. I hadn't thought of it before but he's right about the liberal politics of Fletch. But, if I hadn't thought of it before, who gives a fuck? Criticizing Fletch for its political subversiveness is like complaining about a blowjob because you had to hold the chick's hair. Shut up and enjoy it!

No shit, criticizing Fletch? Come on! It's a fun movie.

If I were going to criticize a movie for bad politics it would be that piece of shit Forrest Gump.

I've talked about the conservative politics of Forrest Gump before and I don't have a problem with it. As portrayed in the movie I think it's a fair dramatization of conservative values. And ultimately I think it's a good movie. I'd rather see conservative values portrayed in movies than anti-liberal demagoguery posing as conservative values on Fox "News".

I'm more critical of Saving Private Ryan for portraying it's conservative picture of war as patriotism. It sets up its message to be above criticism because to do so would see unpatriotic or defaming the soldiers of that conflict. But even still I'm not going to say it's not moving or entertaining just because I disagree with the message. And that is a political movie. Saying Fletch isn't funny because of the liberal undertones is just whinning about nothing.

I don't have a huge problem with the politics of Gump, rather it's just a bad movie in my opinion. That's the shit people forget when they use the political argument...is it a good movie?

i couldn't care less about the politics, i just didn't think it was funny. heck, most of the music i like is rather left-leaning. it's just easier to make music from that side. only rap has been able to make anything decent of "look at me, i'm making a lot of money and have expensive shit!" mildly related, i always marveled in high school that most of the republicans were metalheads and the democrats were into the cure and were all preppy. what does it mean...probably nothing.

Did you just say that "look at me, i'm making a lot of money and have expensive shit!" encapsulates conservatism?

Goodfellas
A Bronx Tale
Sleepers
The Good Sheppard
GodFather Part 2
The Untouchables

in an overly stereotypical sense, yes.

natalie portman. she has two absolute locks: the professional and v for vendetta. then it gets dicey. just going by imdb ratings, revenge of the sith would put her over the top, but i haven't seen it yet, so i'll withhold judgment on that. garden state was very well received, but i thought it was shit, even though i thought she was great in that as well. heat would work, but she had a small role in that. personally, i'd give it to her for closer, but i don't know how universal that would be. i'd put her on this list, but even if she doesn't quite make it, i'd say it's only a matter of time.
