i work in a Command Center with no windows so I had no idea it was raining/storming at all tonight. i like watching lightning, even when it lands a short distance away and makes a big crash is pretty exciting

Lightning is awesome. When I used to visit my ex's parents, they lived on top of a mountain in WV. I'd sit in my car during particularly bad storms and watch the lightning going on all around me. Some nights, it would be striking about once every second.
I've tried to take pics of lightning. It's pretty hard to get a good shot. You can catch by simply putting the camera on a tripod and using the "bulb" setting... or just setting the exposure to last several seconds. The problems are: 1. keeping the camera dry 2. having something interesting in the foreground, so you don't just have a pic of lightning.

i love a good lightning storm. at my mom's house south of buffalo, she lives up on top of a hill and most of the windows face due west, where most of our weather comes from. you can watch the storm coming over the hills for about an hour before it hits where the house is.
i saw a really cool bolt come down through the buffalo city skyline last friday when i was coming back from work.
lightning could be one of the most fascinating things in the world for me.

At least we know that somewhere, Ron Bennington is fast asleep.
Meanwhile my cat scratched my leg when she ran away from the 1st crack of thunder. She's 13 years old, youd think she'd be used to it by now.

Damn straight. I even went to bed a little early when it first started to rain. I cracked the window a bit, and I haven't felt this refreshed in WEEKS. Love it.

I only got one strike, and a badly underexposed one at that:

But I got some cool 'Light Up The Whole Sky' type lightning:

A Lightning Bolt Hits Water, So Close You Can See Its Streamers (http://www.astroengine.com/?p=5631)

This astounding image was shot by photographers Francis Schaefers and Daniel Burger when they were chasing a thunderstorm along a beach in Vlissingen, the Netherlands. Chasing a storm along a beach.

“In a typical cloud-to-ground lightning strike, as the leader approaches the ground, the large electric field at the leader tip induces these upward propagating streamers. The first one that connects to the downward propagating leader initiates the bright return stroke that we see with our eye. Upward streamers are often observed on photographs of lightning hitting the ground.”

I dont get to do it much here, but when I lived in South Florida they would have lightening storms all the time. Not even any rain, just some wind and a shitload of lightening.
Always thought it was cool as hell. Whenever this would happen Id put a patio chair in the driveway and sit back with a Cohiba and a glass of red wine and enjoy the show. I miss that.

Last night we had a huge thunder storm and just a few minutes ago there was a huge rumble again. Been raining like crazy on and off all day.

What walleye...all I keep catching is perch and Jackfish (pike). I keep throwing them back and I am sure I keep catching the same 2 fish!
I love lightning.
I was born in a crossfire hurricane, after all.
