I disagree with Icarus being a "bad" story. Icarus was bright, adventurous, and creative. Bucking the system was attempting to escape from the island, but he didn't listen to legit warnings from his Dad and he got burned.

If Icarus had known when to listen and when to buck the system, he would have lived.

thats not totally true. yes standardized tests drive a lot of curriculum, but there is a huge push for teaching multiple learning styles within a lesson coming from universities who are against high stakes testing. also, you can teach students their individual needs and still be able to prepare them for tests.

At the lower levels, teachers are being ham-strung by the "No child left behind" crap. They have to teach to the test and meet standardised requirements.

Some kids simply learn at different rates and the new regs don't do enough to assuage this. The slower kids are forced to do more than they are ready for and the smarter kids don't get the extra stimulation. Neither group gets the additional attention they need.

That is why my Mom is retiring from teaching early; she is being forced into using a poor educational model that ultimately won't help fix the "education gap" in this country.

I have three kids - 16, 14 and 14. I am amazed at how much my kids are forcefed in a very short amount of time, compared to what we used to do as kids in the late 70s/80s. More amazing to me is the fact that the school systems don't care at all if the kids learn...just that they learn enough so they pass the cirriculum testing. To me, it's bogus. We moved at a slower pace back then, but now a LOT of people think I'm uber-smart simply because I remember some of that dumb shit that was drilled over and over and over in Chemistry, Math and History. My kids, and their friends for that matter, don't remember most of the stuff they did a month ago. It's exactly why we're getting crushed now in technology...because everything is an overview and nothing is a true learning experience.
