View Full Version : New Political Party

I am no longer satisfied with the political situation in the United States. Like many other Americans, I am fed up with the way our system works and the "good old boy" network that the 2 major parties have become.

However, there is not a viable alternative that most Americans can get behind. Either the view is thier focus is too narrow (Green Party), they are run by crackpots (see: Lyndon LaRouche & Ross Perot), or they haven't been able to offer a dynamic view or personality that reaches the "mind" of the general population (Libertarians).

It is time for a change, but how do we do it? How can we get the population off it's ass and shake up the system?

I bring it up here because there are a lot of intelligent and "out-of-the-box" thinkers here that might have some good ideas. What do you think?

I think the Libertarians would have the best shot but they need a charismatic person to unstick them. Get a few congressmen, senators and governers in office and then run one of them for the presidency.

Unfortunately, anyone who would seriously have a chance to win any of those positions would likely run in one of the two major parties with the idea to "fix" things in that party. Then they would either sell out or be crushed.

I don't know who the savior could be but I too think it's long past time for a viable third party.

We TOTALLY need a multi-party sytem like most of the world. Not just 3 - like 10 or 12.

Unfortunately:

1) There are a hell of a lot of people who are content to bitch all day long and never go out and actually do something about it

2) I don't think the average voting mind has evolved enough to think of anything other than the two parties

That said, I would love it so much.
One of the things that gets me so depressed is how narrow minded this country is.

If you want to gather the largest group of people under one tent, resurrect the Know Nothing party.

Here's the problems:

1) Most corporate interests have their hands (and a lot of money) in both parties. They will never allow it to happen.

2) Most current third parties are essentially 'one issue' parties.

3) The American people are not vested enough in politics to care. We, as a whole, prefer the black and white of Democrat vs. Republican

4) Even when new parties have arisen throughout American history, the U.S. has never really supported more than two major parties. Usually the rise of a new party means the eventual death of an old party.

For a real third party to rise, it would take:

a) an extremely charismatic, well funded, and well known figure running at the national level as a third party candidate; or a leader of one of the two parties denouncing their party and creating a third party.

b) a hot button issue which can't be ignored by the American people that this person embraces.

And even if that happened, the new party would probably oust on of the older parties and we'd just have a new two party system.

Does this remind anyone elso of 1938?

That's usually what happens more times than not, if you look at history, at least.

In fact, if the issue isn't decided in the next 5-10 years, I wouldn't be surprised to see an attempt to form a third party around the immigration issue. I don't think it'll work, but i would still expect to see it.
