HERE'S THE LINK (http://www.nbc25.com/content/fulltext/?sid=0798ca6a8511e56068eca2ada1e95223&cid=11619) to a brief description and a video of the news story.
The 4th grader was killed after a portable steel soccer goalpost fell on top of him.
Investigators say the accident happened during a game with a local traveling team and was not a school-related soccer game.
This is so sad. No one even saw it happen. He was playing goalie on the opposite side of the field from the action. They think he might have been swinging on it, but they don't know for sure.

That's rough. No kid deserves that. Are the parents preparing to sue everything in sight? I hope not.
I'd be interested to see how one of those steel frames can be moved by a lone, average ten year old kid. It seems like you would have to be climbing it or hanging off of it. Whatever the case it's a sad story.

Yeah, that's terrible.
When I was a kid everyone would climb and hang on those.

It was a portable goal. They aren't as secure as the regular ones. They haven't determined if it was anchored properly.
If someone was negligent, the parents deserve something, but I'm worried about the consequences. It's not like the school system can afford a big pay out. Plus.... though it was school equipment on school property, but the activity was a Parks & Rec thing. I don't see anything good coming from an already terrible event.
I am glad of one thing. My son was inside when it happened, and didn't have to see it.

for the love of God will someone please ban this stupid, barbaric "sport" before another child has to die like this?

That is awful. The last thing you expect is something like that to happen to your kid.

It would be typical for the parents to sue.

Well, if there was a default in the equipment, then they have the right.
If it was just a tragic accident, then... well... life sucks sometimes.

I agree that if the kid was standing under it and it fell on him, then the parents can sue. If the kid was swinging on it and what not, then they need to drop it. I just never got the idea of suing when a kid dies, does the money bring him back?
