I live in a nice, respectable middle-class neighborhood. Everyone takes good care of their homes, property and landscaping. The guy two houses down from me still has his icicle lights hanging off of all of the eaves of his house. And, I can think of at least 3-4 other houses in the same condition within a five block radius. C'mon people! It's almost fucking June. How the fuck lazy can you be?
The thing is, I don't really socialize with this guy other than a polite "Hello" when we both happen to be outside. I've thought about saying something, maybe in a joking/passing manner, but my wife is afraid it's going to start WWIII.

There's a lady like that in my town. Keeps her stuff up, including her Christmas tree, through March. She even lights her tree. She's a nice woman, and keeps it all neat. She just loves Christmas.

No, he doesn't turn them on but I'm fearing that he just plans to leave them up all year and start turning them on again when Christmas rolls around. I have seen this situation in my travels around the area in the last couple of years. This seems to be a growing trend and I find it disturbing because it is an illustration of the utter laziness of my fellow citizens. It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't the icicle lights. They hang off the the house and are just so obvious and an eyesore.

I leave Christmas lights up all year in my room. I love the soft light it gives. It's nice to have them on while I'm looking at my computer screen. For whatever reason, it's easier on the eyes to have another light source on in the room rather than looking at bright screen in a dark room.
But on the outside of your house? That's just being a lazy ass.

The people accross the street from me still have theirs up. And they still turn them on at night.
At first I thought they might just be hooked into their front door outside light and they went on when they turned on the front light. Nope they aren't. They've been on without that light on. The worst part is it's only 2 sets of lights. One white that goes up one side of a tree trunck (about 8 ft)and down the other, and a multi colored set that goes acros the front edge of the house. But it seems he had a few ft left over when he reached the end so he just looped them back from where he cam, but 2 ft above teh first row. It looks like a real tall skinny backwards J on it's side.
Thanksfully I'm far off the road and only see them through some trees. I can't wait for the leaves to full in.

i was thinking the same thing. rip or cut them down, leave them strewn across the lawn and leave a note stating, "take them down next year or this will happen again". you can write it in blood to add an extra pizazz to the whole thing.

I agree. If it's just some icicle lights, and he's not turning them on at night, what's the big deal? Do they scream at you when you drive down the street? Will it reduce the value of your property? No. And this guy is two houses down from you? You need to act like a real icicle and chill.

The Vatican extended the removal of house lights until two weeks after the Epiphany--two weeks after the Epiphany.

Im not sure if I agree with the property value not being affected. People want to have street appeal and if your close neighbor looks like trailer trash I think it would hurt resale of your house.

Maybe it's a little difficult for you to understand, since you're from Yonkers and all, but some of us like to take a little pride in the upkeep of our property. We don't like some lazy, shiftless fuck to roon the feel and look of the entire neighborhood because he doesn't want to take a half hour out of his "busy" schedule to take down some Christmas lights.
Now, that being said, how would you like to come over and mow my lawn?

I don't get it. Am I so off base here? Are there no other property owners who see this my way? I bought my house because I liked the look of the neighborhood. I, like 99% of my neighbors, take great pride in, and put a lot of hard work and money in the upkeep of my home. Is it to much to ask to not have an eyesore ruining what the neighborhood looks like? It's not like I'm asking the guy to spend a dime, only to take down some lights that should have come down five months ago.
So you're telling me anything goes as long as you keep it on your property? Great, I hope this guy moves next to you.

Yea, I think you are a little off base. They're icicle lights! Any joe driving down the street probably wouldn't even notice them unless they were lit up every night.
They are far, far from what you would label an "eyesore". It's not like he has one of those giant blowup snowmen on the lawn year 'round, because that would be silly.
You noticed the lights and you don't like them. What you have to do if try and forget about them. I'm sure if you looked carefully at every house, you'd find something you didn't like.
They're little lights hanging from the roof. No big deal and far from a stereotypical redneck behavior. It's his property and it doesn't effect yours.

I understand why you don't like it, but at the end of the day it's their property and, in the grand scheme of things, it's not that bad. It's not like he has car wrecks and toilets all over his front yard. They're just icicle lights. Personally, I think Christmas lights look like shit even when it's Christmas, but I can't contrl how people want to decorate their own property along those lines. It's really not something that's actually dragging down the neighborhood or anything like that...YOU just don't like it.

ever since i read this thread, everywhere i look i still see christmas decorations on houses and it makes me laugh. last night me and alex dropped off his parents at their house and as we were coming home, we were at a red light and a house on the side of me had the xmas lights still up. the owner of the house was standing outside having a cigarette so i rolled down my window and said "hey, when you get done with that bud, how about you take those stupid lights down?" the guy laughed and said "holy shit, i phorgot about those"
that was my good deed of the day.

my neighbors WERE like that. Last year, after Easter, I got the "red hot ass" about their lights, santa, etc. all out. So, I went into my garage and pulled out all my Christmas stuff and literally THREW everything all over my driveway. My OTHER neighbors caught on and brought their stuff over, so we had piles of stuff (plastic santas, reindeer, wreaths, etc.) The "offending" neighbor got the idea within 24 hrs and took their lights down. This year they were very prompt.
It might work.
OR, try blaring Christmas Carols all hours of the night...
hmmm.
My crazy-ass boss keeps her christmas stockings and lights up on her mantle all year-round. I have worked for her for two years. Laziness. Im not doing it, she doesnt pay me enough. I do EVERYTHING else for her, not that too.
