ATLANTA (AP) - A vegan couple were sentenced Wednesday to life in prison for the death of their malnourished 6-week-old baby boy, who was fed a diet largely consisting of soy milk and apple juice.

Superior Court Judge L.A. McConnell imposed the mandatory sentences on Jade Sanders, 27, and Lamont Thomas, 31. Their son, Crown Shakur, weighed just 3 1/2 pounds when he died of starvation on April 25, 2004.

The couple were found guilty May 2 of malice murder, felony murder, involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children. A jury deliberated about seven hours before returning the guilty verdicts.

Defense lawyers said the first-time parents did the best they could while adhering to the lifestyle of vegans, who typically use no animal products. They said Sanders and Thomas did not realize the baby, who was born at home, was in danger until minutes before he died.

But prosecutors said the couple intentionally neglected their child and refused to take him to the doctor even as the baby's body wasted away.

"No matter how many times they want to say, 'We're vegans, we're vegetarians,' that's not the issue in this case," said prosecutor Chuck Boring. "The child died because he was not fed. Period."

Yeah that is absolutely insane. Its seems like there has to be more to the story. How the hell did they get felony murder? I guess cruelty to childeren is a felony? It's just insane how they got the charges stacked on them.

I don't know if a healthy baby can be raised on a vegan diet, I know that most babies are largely vegetarian, I know that a healthy baby can't be raised on nothing. Veganism is incidental, these folks are just regular old abusive parents. Who like patchouli oil.

A baby MUST have mother's milk or baby formula. If not, they are not receiving proper nutrition. Every jug of soymilk I've ever bought says, "not suitable for baby formula," or something to that effect.

i didnt read the story but as a new dad I can tell you that there is a pretty big market for organic, vegan, baby food so not getting food to match there lifestyle is nonsense.

I'm no expert on vegans. Are they saying that they couldn't be vegan and still give the baby breast milk? If so, that's insane. Do they go out and knock calves away from cows, when they feed? And yeah... the soy based formulas are fine. What the crap kind of soy product were they giving that child?

My oldest child got mostly breast milk, and also soy formula, and was super healthy. I have to think there's a good chance they really were trying to fuck this kid up. Though nerve racking at times, raising a healthy baby is really quite easy.

I didn't see the soy MILK part. No... Soy MILK isn't good for babies. Soy FORMULA is, though. They were idiots.

They problem wasn't that the parent's were not feeding the kid meat, its that they were retarded. I don't know if giving a six week old baby some ham is the smart the thing to do. Its also a misconception that you have to eat meat as a child to be healthy, there are many societies in the world that never eat meat during any time of their lives, and they do just fine. They should have been at least giving the child breast milk.

It's hideous these people put their ideology before the health of their child and watched it waste away in front of their eyes! It was only 3 pounds when it died for christ's sake! I'm vegetarinan but I'm not forcing it on my kid. She can make up her own mind when she's older.
