'Terminator' back for a new trilogy (http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/Movies/05/10/film.terminator.reut/index.html)
A nascent film company has acquired the franchise rights to the popular movie series from producers Mario Kassar and Andrew Vajna, intending to make a new trilogy. The deal is said to be in the tens of millions of dollars.

not necessarily
in the future wars they had the terminators just as steel skeletons, they only put flesh on one, that became arnold b/c he was travelling back in time to a time where a walking steel skeleton would scare the fuck outta everyone
so no need for ahnold

I don't think that was the reason. Remember the first movie. Resse was telling Sarah about the terminators with flesh on them and how they were using them to fool everyone, but they used dogs to sniff out these terminators. Also Reese had a dream where he remembered such a fleshy terminator infiltrating the human hideout and starting killing everyone. During that time was when the picture of Sarah that Reese had caught fire before his eyes.
So, it's clear the terminators with flesh on them were used against the resistance and weren't just used to go back in time.

As just another note, the scene where Sarah's picture was burnt showed a terminator that wasn't Arnold, which makes sense. If every fleshy terminator looked like Arnold, they'd be easy to identify.
So they can show fleshy terminators w/o Arnold.

i think he was just trying to say that since ahnold's model was the first terminator template we'd have to have him in it somehow

Actually, the ones the dogs could most easily spot had Rubber skin. That was one of the reasons they developed the cyborg/flesh Terminators to infiltrate the resistance.
I don't know if the model that Reese dreamed about was rubber or not, since the dogs went mental.

Okay, the script said that 600 series were rubber and they spotted them easily. They don't say whether they were able to do so with dogs or just by plain human sight.
Later Sarah said she dreamed of dogs, and Reese said that they used them to spot Terminators. Later we see the motel dog barking at Arnold.
Also, there's nothing that says that the Arnold model is the first of this series. Reese calls the models "new" but doesn't say how new, etc.
I think in T2, they called the living metal terminator the first in the series, but it doesn't look like they did it here, unless I missed something.

I didn't read the whole thing. I just did a search for the words "flesh" and then later "dog." I know that those words surrounded the discussion of how the terminators were identified by the resistance.

The end of T3 was one of the saddest yet most beautiful endings to a sci-fi movie I've ever seen.
As for Marcus S. being part of the Terminator franchise...
1) Arnold wasn't exactly known as a great actor before getting the role of the Terminator. Hercules in New York, anyone?
2) There's not really a big difference between a bodybuilder and an underwear model.
Also, what happened to the Rock getting a role in this movie?
And will Arnold's cameo be of "Candy"?

The first terminator was "luck" it was the Arnold model.
The second terminator was picked to be the Arnold model so Sarah could identify it.
The third terminator was picked because John bonded with the Arnold model.

While it's been hinted in previous Hollywood trade articles, Moviehole now says it's a done deal - McG will direct Warner Bros. Pictures' Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, the fourth installment in the popular franchise.
Expected to hit theaters in the summer of 2009, "Terminator Salvation" will reinvent the cyborg saga with a storyline to be told over a three-movie span. The film is set in the future, in a full-scale war between Skynet and humankind.
McG directed We Are Marshall for WB and also helmed the "Charlie's Angels" films.

Here's the film's synopsis: In the highly anticipated new installment of The Terminator film franchise, set in post-apocalyptic 2018, Christian Bale stars as John Connor, the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators. But the future Connor was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet's operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind.

I think things are still a little cloudy on that, at least as far as what the public knows. The early talk was that Terminator 3 effectively didn't happen because the TV series was going to screw up that series of events. However, nobody knew if the series was going to go over with fans.
There are too many people trying to make money on the franchise at the moment, so it isn't clear which "vision of the future" is going to be cannon and which is tangential.

Terminator 3 ended with John Connor surviving Judgement Day and stepping up to the plate to offer the other survivors a voice of (semi) authority. So he's all set to take on the mantle of leader of the resistance, right? Er... no. Turns out it's not quite that simple. (http://io9.com/5070557/its-not-easy-being-john-connor)
McG explains:
"The interesting thing about this movie is that Connor comes to be under suspicion. Command will look at him and say, 'How come you keep coming through these things alive? And you know so much about the machines? What is that all about?' And they point a finger at him while the audience is realizing..." and here McG's voice is raised to an indignant shout: "... that is fucking John Connor! If anybody is on the side of humanity, it is this guy!' One thing I learned from Amy Pascal at Sony," he muses, "is make sure your hero deserves all the credit in the world and gets none. And that is John Connor."
Some mild spoilers in the article.

What do you think of the show? I am a fan of T3, felt it had a great ending. great progression of the story and how john comes to command.
I also feel the show lends to good progression, however i feel it sometimes is the worst television i have ever seen. It's hit or miss really.
But one thing i do notice is that it is supposed to be the time between T2 and T3. But it does not follow the foundation that T3 has set.
For example in the T3 John connor acts as if he knows 3 terminators really. But in the show there is a new terminator every week that john has to fight off or whatever. I just feel they are neglecting T3, which could be good, but if thier gonna follow 1 and 2 why not stay true to 3?

I think at this point you just have to separate the TV show from the movies. The show has been picked up for a full season. Ratings aren't spectacular so it remains to be seen if there will be a third season. If there is, they'll have to come up with new storylines and each one would most likely diverge from the movies. It's just easier to keep them seperate.
Mr Charlie

I do enjoy how the future bots keep an eye on the internet usage of connor and when he slips up there is only a matter of time that another terminator is sent back to locate him the moment they know he is going to be there.
It's the little things i like i know.

They have a show that was just renewed for another season. The new movie comes out, shit goes down in the movie, certain key players and plots introduced, go back to the TV show and use ti as a means to flesh out the back story more. Origins.

I think if you follow the storyline they pretty much erased T3 with the events of the series. However I think the new film will start far enough in the future that it won't matter

The half man, half bot creation is the T-600, which is not yet Arnold's T-800 and nowhere near the slinky liquid metal look of the T-1000. But look at that cannon he's got attached to his arm — I dare you to try and run away from those shells.
Also in this batch are the ginormous Harvesters with a close up on their spying tail. But more important is a close-up look at the Mototerminator. I'm by far and away most excited for the Mototerminator, which are exactly what you think they are, motorcycle terminators. Now as far as I can tell in this robot does NOT unwind into a Wheeler, a la Return To Oz, but you know what? It's one heck of a close call.

I saw the Behind the Scenes that was on AICN a few days ago. This movie looks totally awesome, I am so stoked. They are sorta introducing a Matrix feel to the movie, being that they showed the new Harvester bots that capture remaining humans for some reason, terminator models that turn into death cycles, etc. It looks great.

Resistance Fighter Moon Bloodgood Gets Her Own Terminator CG Web Series
Want to know more about a minor character's climb up the ranks of the Resistance? The new six-episode Terminator Salvation machinima takes place two years before the film, exploring new bots and resistance-building:
The Resistance is the last hope for survival. Commanded by the remnants of a decimated military system, resistance fighters battle the machines of Skynet day and night without quitting. Blair Williams is one of these fighters. Blair is in her early 30's and is old enough to remember a normal life but vital enough to learn how to fight. She is highly skilled and superbly courageous - traits that often get her some of the hardest missions.
We meet Blair at the beginning of one of these missions. She has been sent into the heart of downtown Los Angeles, a known hot zone, to seek out and destroy something called "The Ghost" - a code name designated to a machine designed to interfere with Command's communications. The resistance knows that Skynet is ever evolving and this must be just another tactic to bring down the leadership. Without the ability to talk to each other, the Resistance would simply fracture and collapse. It was already starting to happen.

Moon Bloodgood has got to be one of the coolest names for a woman. I can understand the topless scene not being needed. The nudity in the first movie was a major part of the plot, so unless she got naked to conceive another leader of the human resistance it may not be needed, but why not have it anyway? It's supposed to be a fun movie. What is more fun than a naked Moon Bloodgood?
I am going to see it tonight, I am not expecting it to be as good as the 1st two movies, I am hoping it will be McG's Transformers (and by that I mean a sucky director's best work so far, which ends up not being so bad if you don't expect too much and turn off your brain for a little while. That is the only way I ended up enjoying Transformers the first time, but I made the mistake of watching it again. Oofa! Go see Star Trek again and wait till this things on cable. Trust me.
Also, I saw no tits unless I fell asleep.
EDIT: Actually just read the thread and saw the scene was cut.
While the action scenes were great, better than Star Trek even, the rest of this movie was so incredibly stupid I almost can't believe it. There so much stupid shit that happens that it's overloaded my brain. The ridiculous action scenes were more believable than anything else that happens. They beat you over the head to explain the most simple plot points. Characters act like idiots on a consistent basis. The machines act even dumber than the humans. Stupid shit happens. This movie is the stupidest thing I have seen in a long, long time.
If you want to read about the unbelievable ending read the following spoiler.
John Connor gets a heart transplant from a machine. Because that's apparently the cure for being impaled in the chest and there are plenty of transplant surgeons and places to perform surgery in a post-apocalyptic wasteland that's getting nuked every other fucking day.
I wish I was making that dumb shit up.

Seriously - if you take out the quality special effects what you have left is one of those lame SciFi Channel movies with insipid dialogue and highly unlikely situations as HBox described. Honestly it's really no better than Independence Day in that respect. Which come to think of it - there were scenes that struck me as complete rip-offs of other films including ID4, War of the Worlds, The New Battlestar Galactica - they even rip-off their own franchise with the final battle taking place in a factory with the molten metal and everything.
I can't tell you all how disappointed I was. The only solace I can get is if I can hopefully disuade some of you from wasting money on this. Like I said in my previous post- catch this on cable some Saturday night after you get home from a night of partying. Maybe it would be better if you're sedated.

I felt the same way watching this. If there was no Christian Bale and this wasn't Terminator this was a straight to DVD movie. I do think this movie was filmed marvelously so at least that dummy DP did a good job. There were a couple of really long tracking shots that I liked. I also liked the sound work. The machines had some original, menacing sounds. But there was so much other bad stuff. There were so may things that didn't make sense, so many times characters acted in a simply unbelievable manner, so many massive plot holes it's hard to believe these actors could spit out some of these dumb lines. And then there was that one scene where they rip off the worst part in the Matrix trilogy that is so stupid on so many levels I almost walked out.
And they even changed what was a really cool ending to what I described above!
Originally John died and Marcus took his skin and continued on as leader of the resistance.

Though the future will end up quite similarly, only the Whatley Posse takes over before the machines do.

I was not on the edge of my seat. And I checked my watch a number of times during this thing.
Well I don't just want to just bash it so here are a couple good things about the movie:
It was nice to see John listening to Sarah's tapes (you see her start to record one at the end of the original Terminator, and I think you even hear that exact one at one point during this movie) and John still has her picture (he hasn't given it to Kyle yet)
It was nice to see Arnold as the T-800. They used CGI/Face Mapping to put his face on Roland Kickinger's body. It looked a bit fake but it worked in my mind since this isn't a real person and should look a little fake (This is one of the first T-800's made when Kyle was a teenager, so they would make it look better by the time Kyle is a bit older and sent into the past to proteck Sarah from a newer T-800)
Did you guys know that O. J. Simpson was on James Cameron's short list of people to play the original Terminator but he did not think that "such a nice guy could be a ruthless killer" Really!
The movie had some fantastic action shots, but the story was lame. As said above. The TV show has a much better storyline (even if it's being cut off at this point)
This is Bale's worst movie, and McG's best. Just like John Turturro in Transformers.

If you are a huge Terminator fan (Like I am) I wouldn't call it a waste of time, there are some cool things about the movie (but, yes, it's very average as CYYYFYYY said) and it doesn't have that silly McG feel, it's just not anything like a James Cameron caliber film. It's better than Terminator 3, but not as good as the TV show and no where near as good as Terminator or T2.
I do want to see Star Trek again. At T4 I saw a trailer for a cool looking Sci-Fi film: District 9 (http://www.d-9.com/) It may end up sucking but it looks like something new and not so much of a remake or rip off of something we've seen before

Honestly, I enjoyed it. I think a lot of people want to say "it sucks" just to say "it sucks".
I"suck". Honestly I think T3 is not as good as the other 2 Terminators obviously, but it's not a 'bad' film....it's just not as good.
Here they had to set up a new trilogy in the future, which they did fairly well. (We rarely saw post Judgement Day). They did do that.....there was action - would've like to see more actual terminators than hunter killers and motorcycle terminators...but you can't say there wasn't good action.
I do have a few problems with the middle scene (wouldn't that huge battle attract "bad" terminators??) and thought there would be more terminators - at Skynet?????
All in all it's no worse than Transformers from last year, and that movie made a fortune. I would probably see Terminator 4 again before Star Trek - but that's just me. It's like people think the first two terminators were the greatest film ever - they aren't. They are popcorn movies, and so is this one.

Besides the heart ending and the whole "signal" thing, I liked it. The ending could have been done MUCH better.
And just so I have this straight, pandering in star trek ok, but in terminator not ok?

Yes, since JJ Abrams was part of the creation of Lost (and has little to do with it now) he gets a free pass, all the pandering and lens flare he can shove into a movie is okay.would've like to see more actual terminators than hunter killers and motorcycle terminators...
That is an excellent point. This movie should have been full of Terminators!
I am a huge Terminator 1 & 2 fan - I saw the third in the theatres, and kind of enjoyed it, but ultimately never bothered again - never seen a moment of the tv series - and when I heard this one was PG-13, and who the director was, my expectations went to zero. I just don't have the time or money right now on flicks just for the cool SFX.

Unless McG had a hand in the script I think he's the best part of the movie. The movie looks great and the action scenes were very well done. It was more the nonsensical plot and terrible acting.

Great LOOKING movie.
But... I gotta say... I enjoyed T3 more than I enjoyed T4. This one kinda lost it's way.
It sure did look cool, though.

Just saw it, thought it lived up to the 35% on Rotten Tomatoes.
I LOVE Terminator and I really like Terminator 2. Kyle Reese is one of my favorite all-time characters and I actually liked the job Anthon Yelchin did in this flim. However, why on Earth was the little girl with him? It made no sense, added nothing to the story and was just there because it was a blockbuster film. Pretty dumb. Also, the War of the Worlds style kidnapping was lame and set-off a convoluted plot point that overshadowed the film and took away from the apocolyptic feel of the world McG was trying to create.
Bale added NOTHING to the film. Keanu Reeves could have probably played John Connor and I would have felt the same way. Also, I heard a lot about Sam Worthington giving a great performance, but I just didn't see it. Again, his love story with Moon Bloodgood was completely cliche' and absurd.
This movie had a lot of wasted opportunities. The Terminator world could be one of the coolest sci-fi worlds to put on screen. I think the film falling in love with it's own special effects took away from the story. I loved the world the first Terminator hinted at (with much less advanced special effects), but this world seemed empty. When Worthington is walking through a destroyed L.A. in the beginning of the film I really felt nothing. The story seemed rushed and heavily edited to fit in absurd climax's.
Too bad, could have been great.

Honestly, I enjoyed it. I think a lot of people want to say "it sucks" just to say "it sucks".
I don't know why you'd think that. Most people that didn't like it have pretty good reasons for not liking it. I think your mentioning Transformers is good. These aren't films, they are a series of special effects disguised as movies.

Unbelievable fucking dogshit. There are so many plot holes and so much horrid exposition that I wouldn't know where to begin the dissection. I will say this. Why the fuck are killer machines more interested in throwing humans into the scenery instead of using their massive hydraulic power to CRUSH THEIR FUCKING HEADS.

The whole time I'm thinking, "um, why don't he machines just detonate a nuke in every battle they have with the humans?"
A good article about what the script for this movie went through in the making of it. Apparently Christian Bale and Jonathan Nolan are largely responsible for this dogshit. Spoilers obviously. (http://chud.com/articles/articles/19577/1/EXCLUSIVE-WHAT-WENT-WRONG-WITH-TERMINATOR-SALVATION/Page1.html)
They took a script with interesting ideas and its own problems, took most everything interesting about it and took it out and replaced it almost with random scenes and little regard for a coherent story. I though that old script sounded really good right until hitting Skynet City. But they just ended up throwing together two bad scripts and hoping for the best.
Another thing that is still bothering me about the end and that final big explosion:
I don't think they had any idea how nuclear explosions work. What John Connor built was a dirty bomb.

That's been a symptom of shit movies for a long time. I remember seeing Batman and Robin way back when, and I remember being annoyed as hell that Bane was punching through brick walls, and yet in the same sequence choked Robin for about a full minute with NO discernable. Instead of crushing him like a styrofoam cup, Robin didn't so much as rub his neck afterwards. Apparently a human windpipe is more resiliant than a wall.

Man, I was so excited in the beginning too! Actual military response to the machines! Shame the rest of the movie was just, "Look out, a robot or two. Lets flee."

I have to agree with some of the reviews here. It was a good movie, just not a great one. Incredible F/X. Awesome action scenes. At the beginning, when John takes the helicopter... that was an amazing shot. Would love to learn how they did that.
But yea, the story. It was just lacking punch.
I didn't feel Marcus' quest for knowledge. His relationship with Moon's character just didn't work.
And what's with the fucking kids we gotta see in action films anymore? Who thinks it's a good idea to throw a kid in these kind of movies. Pointless.
But seeing the Arnold T-800 come out of that room was awesome. I had heard the T-800 would be in there, I just didn't expect to see it with its skin on!
But yea, overall the movie falls flat.

I don't know if the consensus in here is that the movie was good. I'd confidently say the movie was bad.
I agree with your other points. The kid in the movie was pointless, Marcus' quest for his origin was rushed and I didn't feel it AT ALL, and his relationship with Moon was beyond cliche'.
There were plotholes everywhere and things just miraculously happened with very little explanation.
The helicopter scene and some of the other special effects were cool, but it's not enough for me to consider this a good movie.

Agreed, I thought there would be sweet battles but besides that one with the A-10s there wasn't much man.
