View Full Version : I bought a house!

Well, actually, I finally closed on the house, two long months after the accepted offer. Mrs. Bandit and I have written our last rent check and are ready for one last move (at least for a good while). After spending our post college years roaming the Northeast in search of a place to roost, my chick and I decided there's no place like home and headed back to Orange County (I'm actually from Sussex County, NJ but went to HS in NY on account of my teeny, tiny little hometown.)
In celebration, a nice Bordeaux, giving way to a stoge on the deck, courtesy of Chip196. Thanks budday!

Congratulations. Best of luck to you and the Mrs. It is truly gratifying to be a homeowner, but the work never ends. You guys will never be "finished".
Enjoy!

You may never write another rent check again, but there are two things you'll never stop doing once you become a homeowner. Paying taxes and spending your nights and weekends working on the house or yard.

Why didn't you post a picture? ....did you buy a place in the projects?

I didn't post a picture because I didn't have any on my laptop. They were all on my chicks computer. Situation rectified and here it is. http://mmcdermott1.photosite.com/%7Ephotos/tn/911_1024.ts1172758827000.jpgThe blue siding is atrocious, but I don't care. It's my blue siding. But it's 3Br, one for me and my chick, one for the baby and one for work/relaxing. As soon as we get painted, you're all invited to drop by.

It really is! I'm sure it's just naivete and will wear off after a full summer, but I can't wait to get at my yard. But first I suppose I should buy a lawnmower.

Don't forget the weed-whacker, blower, spreader, hedge clippers, shovel, rake, hoe, seed, fertilizer, mulch, etc.

And that's just for the yard!

Bandit,
congrats!!!! now be prepared for the hard work. i just spent 2 hours yesterday cleaning away bushes and twigs, mowing the lawn. now we have to get the central air checked, the sprinkler system and have some trees removed. may i suggest that if you have a fair amount of trees around your house that you invest in gutter covers. mine ran us around $500.00, but its better than climbing up a ladder to clean the gutters. anytime family or friends want to get you something for a holiday, ask for home depot gift cards. other than that i wish you and yours the best and welcome to the homeowners club.

Bandit,
Congrats. I moved back to that area a year and a half ago and couldnn't be happier. I actually grew up in Monroe, well South Blooming Grove but had a Monroe address.

Enjoy all your upcoming weekend projects. And remember, anyweekend project is more tolerable with beer.

I grew up in South Blooming grove between Monroe and Washingtonville. Up the hill from the SBG Firehouse that's on RT 208.

You anywhere near there? Now I'm in Cornwall.

We've spent the last year in the Lake Anne "Compound." Interesting place. One year was plenty. We thought it would be great because the Brotherhood is right up 208.

Congrats BeerBandit,

Looking back at my first house purchase, let me ask you; how many other things were more nerve-racking, doubt and second-guess causing, and just plain scarier in your life then seeking, buying, and closing on a house?

Also; how many times do you estimate you signed your name or initials?

My guess is that will be a short list. And a large number.

My father, the businessman and USMC Col. came to the closing of my first house, as a crutch. At the end, one of the Agents shook my hand and said 'Congratulations; you're a Homeowner!'

My father then patted me on the shoulder, and said loudly; 'Congratulations; you've just signed away complete financial control of your life !!!'

Congrats, Bandit on the most stressful/adult thing you can do. It is a mother effer of a process, but yes, it ends up being more tahn worth it. Andrew and I bought our place a little less than a year ago and I never thought we'd come out of it alive, but we did and it was awesome. We only have a condo so we have the whole getting a house thing to go through, but we had to start somewhere. Hope you've got a lot of friends to help ya move!

Why does everybody keep saying that?

There is still quite a lot that I do need to purchase (the aforementioned lawnmower, a ladder, a refrigerator), but I do own a drill and a staple gun. Is that enough?

It was absolutely a harrowing experience. Add in that my chick is pregnant and was job searching and completely freaked at one point due to overload and begged to put off the search for a year. As for the closing, we opted for the 1st and 2nd mortgage as we did not put 20% down, so we did double duty in the signing and initialing. I may not be able to play Madden for a good while.

best bet is to buy one of those ryobi combo kits from home depot, they run anywhere from 100-250 depending on how many ppieces you get

it'll pretty much have all you need

So I went to Home Depot today to get some paint and accessories, and I discovered this:

People who own homes get up early on the weekends. Home Depot opens at 6:00 AM! Insanity. I don't think any of the "Marts" open that early.

I had to go back this evening to get some more paint because we decided to do another room. We were recognized. After one day I'm a regular at The Depot.

Do yourself a favor, get the credit card and charge at least $300 each trip. They give you 6 months w/o interest to pay it back. BUT make sure you pay it back, otherwise you get socked with 7 months worth of interest after the offer expires.

OR EVEN BETTER wait for their deals after you join. You'll soon start getting postcards from them and for each season they run a 12 month offer on something related to the season (Grills/Patio sets for the summer, interior jobs for the winter)

Just stay away from their Garden for any landscaping plants. Herbs and hanging plants are OK. They dont water them and the fucking things die on you. Happened to me 2 years in a row.

That Is Good Advice. Always Go To Your Local Nursery For Plants. That's One Area Home Depot And Lowes Don't Do Right.
