There was a post by 100proof in the FreeFM listening thread during the 'What job's tougher: firefighters or cops?" discussion on the air. I said 'Serpico proved there were bent cops; how many bent firefighters are there?' 100proof replied that Serpico was scum and got everything he deserved. I'm guessing he's likely a cop.

Which leads me to ask people: What do you think of Serpico? What is more important and what do you respect more? Being loyal to the people you work with, or being ultimately loyal to the law and being willing to rat out a brother if they're found out to be crooked? I'm referring to jobs like cops or soldiers, where you form a special kind of bond you wouldn't feel for Bob at OfficeMax. When does loyalty cross the line for you? Does it ever?

I would have to say that your loyalty lies to the law if you're a police officer. Not saying that cops shouldn't stand by each other when possible, because they should, but if your job is uphold the law you should know that your supposed to uphold the law no matter who it is that may be breaking it.

There are many different jobs in which people get "burnt out" and loose focus of what their doing because of the stresses involved with their work. Although, at the same time I don't think that people can use this as a excuse because although it's difficult, there are means of dealing with these stresses. For example therapy or getting a different job.

Wellllllllll, as a cop I who has never stolen a thing or taken bribes whatever I hate dirty cops. By that I mean cops who do drugs, steal, pick up hookers, and shit like that. I hate cops who disgrace those who go to work everyday and do their jobs and those who died doing their jobs. What I dont consider to be dirty is that sometimes as cops we have to beat people. Sometimes folks people dont willingly go to jail and fight like motherfuckers to avoid it. Yes sometimes from someone not in the fight it looks violent and the person ends up bloody. And folks thats the way it goes criminals get beat up because we are supposed to win the fight. Criminals get bit by dogs because they are assholes. When you are told to leave, leave. When you are told to put your hands behind your back, do it. Just my opinion.

Arent there "dirty" firefighters who get off by lighting things and then putting out their own fire? Probably rare though...

That's not really too rare. I even knew one. They don't tend to last too long, though. They're crazy, and they get caught.

No, Firefighters also do building inspections for violations of fire codes. Thats where they get to make a few bucks on the side.

The answer is neither of them is the toughest job in the city. Construction work (http://www.careerbuilder.com/JobSeeker/careerbytes/CBArticle.aspx?articleID=421) is by far the most dangerous work in the city. Steel workers, Roofers and general construction are all far more dangerous than anything Cops or Firemen do.
But they're usually immigrants and often dont have a union whining to the press every time they're asked to do a little work, so no one cares.

Something like this happened to me at work. One of the other staff members was abusing the consumers. I went to the big boss on them and got them suspended. I feel that I did the right thing, but some of the staff gave me shit about it. But fuck them, my responsilbilty is to my consumers: if i don't standup for them, who will?

the whole "blue wall of silence" disgusts me. it makes the police no better than the criminal element.

Its really annoying how both of these occupations have a chip on their shoulder about how dangerous their job is. But the fact of the matter is its not, compared to a zillion other jobs. Last time I checked Cops were something like 48 on the top 100 for annual fatalities and Firefighters were even lower.

You know what else is in the top 10? Truck drivers, Delivery men, sales work, factory work. I've done all of those jobs at one time or another, I dont see anyone kissing my ass.

Lots of people have tough jobs. You don't like it? Quit. And stop complaining.

BTW-This isn't an anti-cop rant. Half the people I was friends with in HS became cops, plus some family. Its directed at those Cops that constantly bitch about how tough they have it, and how they're not paid enough for all the danger and sacrifice they do. The fact of the matter is lots of people do more dangerous work for less pay and dont spend all day whining to the public about it.

i think it's all aboot their danger stemming directly from protecting the rest of us from danger. like crab fishing is horribly dangerous, but it's not like we're being invaded by crabs and that's why they risk their lives. good point, tho.
